Greatest Hits Vol. 3 - Joel, Billy (Cassette 1997)

Billy Joel's third "Greatest Hits" album is full of beautiful, evocative songs

Pros:
Songs from Billy's "final" 12-year recording period

Cons:
None! None whatsoever!

I have to admit it...I almost didn't buy this album. When Billy Joel's Greatest Hits: Volume III was released in 1997, I wasn't sure if I wanted to purchase it. I hadn't bought many of Joel's post-An Innocent Man albums (although a few good friends had given me The Bridge, Kohcept, and the Greatest Hits: Vols. I

Billy Joel's Third Greatest Hit Album is Addictive!

Pros:
17 awesome Billy Joel songs!

Cons:
none

I don't know anyone who doesn't like Billy Joel; he has just the right mixture of pop/rock and light music to please... well, anybody. In fact, he may be the only artist that my husband and I agree on 100% - his albums always come along with us on road trips. Recently I noticed that Greatest Hits Volume III was available. Because Volumes I and II have been frequently enjoyed at our house, I decided I needed to have this cd. It has been in over-play drive ever since. This album includes seventeen songs, most of which are from the late 1980's and the 1990's. For me, the centerpiece song is...

GREATEST HITS VOLUME III Puts a Cap on Billy Joel's Extraordinary Rock/Pop Career

Pros:
GHv3 validates Storm Front as the greatest album; three good cover songs

Cons:
I found a couple of selections questionable

Released in 1997, Greatest Hits Volume III is Billy Joel's third album since KOHWEPT from 1987, first album since River of Dreams in 1993, and zero-th album featuring original songs. Although GHv3 takes two more songs from An Innocent Man, GHv3 also validates the greatness of Storm Front by taking six songs from that album and therefore putting it on par with The Stranger. __________________________________________________ Greatest Hits Volume III Billy Joel (1997 - Columbia) All lyrics by Billy Joel except for songs [15]-[17] Billy Joel's instrumental contributions : Piano -- all songs...

 A Mixed Bag
Review created: 04/26/01

Pros:
Good number of solid & recognizable tunes from the end of Joel's pop career.

Cons:
Missing hits, forgetable rarities & a nonsensical arrangement.

Well, Billy Joel had quite a pop music career, didn't he? It spanned three decades, produced twelve studio albums and enough hit songs to fill up three Greatest Hits collections quite nicely. It's unfortunate that the third collection wasn't put together all that well... Each "Greatest Hits" record covers a different period in Joel's career. The first defined, quite acurately, his more simple piano rock period with hits like "Piano Man" and "Only the Good Die Young" as well as very classical-inspired ballads. The second retrospective took on his much heavier-produced, experimental, pop music..

 Good Songs, Bad Career Move
Review created: 05/21/01

Pros:
Some musical gems like "The River of Dreams" that show Joel's songwriting brilliance.

Cons:
Unnecessary cover songs thrown in at the end simply to lengthen the album!

If I could give 3 and a half stars I would, but out of loyalty and respect to Billy Joel, I'll round up rather than down. There is, after all, some great music on this album- "Leningrad", "We Didn't Start the Fire", "And So It Goes", "All About Soul", "Lullabye", and "The River of Dreams". I wish Joel were still young and thus qualified to be a player in modern pop, because his "pop" from the '70s and '80s was infinitely better than most of the crap on the pop charts these days. But now he'd only be viewed as an old has-been, permanently banished to the world of Adult Contemporary music....
