RUSH GRACEFUL UNDER PRESSURE
Review created: 02/05/08

1984 started off not so well for the members of Rush. They apparently were not too happy with the production values on their last release "Signals". The band and fans alike felt the keyboard sound was too overbearing, the guitar tracks too buried & the drum sound not up to snuff. While the songs themselves were of high quality, the overall mix was not.(Why did they release it then?). Alex, Geddy & Neil thought a change of co-producer was in order. So out goes long time producer Terry Brown, who had helped produce every one of their records up to this point, and was responsible for much of their growth both musically and personally. It was a difficult thing for them to have to tell him they wanted (or needed) to work with someone else. They thought bringing in someone fresh could help with the new direction they were heading with their music. The problem is that they were having difficulties finding someone to commit to their next project. Several producers were contacted,no one came through until Peter Henderson arrived after the trio had already begun recording. The resultant "Grace Under Pressure" showed a much darker side to the band, with lyrics dealing with such topics as nuclear threat(Distant Early Warning), losing friends in death (Afterimage), fear (The Enemy Within)and the horrors of the concentration camps (Red Sector A). Musically dark as well, the guitar was once again brought to the fore. Lifeson was well into his heavy texturalist mode with some of his best playing here. Lee's bass playing & keyboard parts are integral yet evenly balanced with the guitar & Peart's complex drum tracks. The vocals, as always, are top notch, Geddy singing Neil's words with an incredible amount of passion and conviction. This album may not be their best effort, but considering all the group had gone through, this CD is very deserving of many plays and close scrutiny, and rates up there with the rest of their classics. A must have for fans and a must hear for everyone else interested in heavy & progressive music.

This music recording is unbelievable!!! I bought this album when it first came out in 1984 and I loved it then. Now that I am in my 40s it still not only rocks your socks off the lyrics mean So much more; so deep and related to real life. Not just let's go out and party. I'm partial Rush is my favorite after all these years but I never appreciated this album more than now.

Rush -- Grace Under Pressure (1984)

Pros:
Synthesizer city! Lovely melodies. Peart. Great singing by Geddy Lee and awesome lyrics.

Cons:
Only eight songs, synth is notorious for diluting Lifeson out of the mix.

Grace Under Pressure? Nope, doesn't ring a bell. Well, I got the chance to hear it a couple weeks ago (along with preceding album Signals) and all I can say is, "Sweeet!" Although Rush walked the 80's streets of what they call "progressive rock" (for which there can be any of a dozen different definitions), much like Genesis, their sound here is highly accessible. Grace Under Pressure marked a turning point for Rush, starting with the recruitment of producer Peter Henderson, who seems to have polished the sound and removed a lot of the spontaneity. For fans of albums like Moving Pictures and..

Less Complex But One Of Rush's More Entertaining Releases

Pros:
It's an accessible record

Cons:
Sometimes it gets too simplistic even for me!

(Disclaimer: Those looking for a brief description of the album will find what their looking for in the "Review Body" section. The section titled "Track Reviews" is meant only for those who want to read detailed descriptions of the songs, and they do not constitute the essence of this review. Lastly and most importantly, this review is not necessarily written by the point of view of a Rush fan.) Overall Score: 4/5 Best song: Distant Early Warning Worst song: Kid Gloves Review Body: Well, I guess this proves how simple-minded I am. (Alas, the flamers win!) Here, these guys make an album with...

 Another Graceful Highlight for Rush

Pros:
Better combination of synths and guitars. Powerful, if not dark, lyrics.

Cons:
Some static on the first track.

Note: This review is part of a re-writing process I'm going through on my earlier Rush entries. Some of them clearly needed a little more polish so I felt obligated to do so. Rather than delete the original and re-submit a new review, I felt it best to simply modify the original and add a notification of the updated review in PTiemann's Notification System. Thanks for reading... ... In the cold-war era of the mid-1980's, bands such as U-2, Depeche Mode and Rush (to name a few) were putting out albums reflecting their concern and take on this volatile era. The songs were dark and pessimistic...

 Their "dark album".

Pros:
The Body Electric, Kid Gloves and Red Lenses.

Cons:
Some weak songs...the band photo on the back cover.

When I first heard this album back in 1984, I was very disappointed with it and thought it was the worst album Rush ever made. Within a few weeks, I really started to like it and for years I thought it was one of their best albums. I would now say that my opinion is somewhere in between....there are some terrific songs on this and some very mediocre and slightly ugly ones. Grace Under Pressure was the most drastic change in sound that Rush ever made from album to album. For one, it was the first album the band did without their longtime producer Terry Brown. In Brown's place was Peter...

I still don't know what's wrong with this one.

Pros:
Great stuff in spite of the criticism.

Cons:
A song or two sounds like filler.

A lot of Rush fans simply hate this album. I've heard it described as one that sacrifices music for the sake of fooling around with the latest bits of technology. While that argument can be made with a straight face, I believe it fails. Why? Just give "Distant Early Warning," a bleak little tale that sounded right in home in the days of the Cold War and Atari's Missile Command game. Geddy Lee runs nuts on synthesizers and really adds a lot of dimension to the song, and Alex Lifeson's guitar is not as "out front" as on Rush's earlier works. But, guess what? That's still a powerful, driving...
