joe picci is just spectacular in this movie. his acting his superb. robert de niro and ray loitta's acting were also very good very believable. very real.
There are probably only seven people under 40 who haven't seen this movie, and boy are they missing something special. This ranks up there with Casino, Scarface and Heat (and you should see THEM also). Crank up the DVD player, pop the corn, sit back and enjoy the show.
Like all new technology, HD DVDs tend to be on the ridiculously high side of the priceline. Getting them used makes sense from a practical standpoint. There are, however, some things to consider. First, these are much like their non-HD counterparts in that scratches will affect disc play. You need to be sure to contact the seller in advance to clear up any questions in regards to the condition of the disc. Second, don't always assume that sellers will be upfront with you. The majority of my experiences on ebay have been pleasant but there are those who set up shop to turn a quick profit at the expense of the unwary buyer. Two key elements to any good ebay transaction are to (1) know your seller, and (2) utilize feedback as a tool to evaluate a potential transaction. (1) While it may sound stereotypical, Asian sellers tend to be the ones selling fakes or VCDs which may not play on American players. Also, the shipping costs associated with overseas purchases are higher and tougher to track in the event the item is either lost or never sent at all. Which brings me to number 2... (2) FEEDBACK IS THERE FOR A REASON!!! So use it. If a seller has tons of positive feedback there is a good chance you are dealing with a pro. If their score is under 50 they may have set up other accounts and artificially created the score. As always, the ebay transaction is caveat emptor. If you're getting that new HD DVD for a steal it may be worth taking the chance.
When HD DVD came out, I wasn't excited about starting my DVD collection over. There is no way that I'm going to buy every movie I own on DVD again on HD DVD. When I saw that Goodfellas was released on HD, I didn't hesitate, I'm an owner. I've seen this movie more times than I can count on DVD. Watching it on HD DVD in 1080i was amazing though. I'm ready to watch this movie over and over and over again now.
I know that there are many Francis Ford Coppola fans who would disagre with me when I say that Goodfellas is better than The Godfather and Marlon Brando's portrayal. However, as a concise picture with a stellar ensemble cast, I think Goodfellas beats it hands down. While The Godfather is an epic picture meant to describe generations of a family, Goodfellas is an excellent portrait of a shorter period in time. Ray Liotta's character has finally become part of "The Family", and he's thrilled about the power, money, and prestige that come with the territory. What he doesn't count on, though, is the intense rivalry and backstabbing that occurs between family members. He also doesn't see the bad things coming--including infidelity, drug addiction, and an unhappy marriage. Goodfellas doesn't glamorize the mob; evil rears its ugly head pretty early in this movie.
Don't miss Scorsese's then-living parents in a few cameo scenes; he has included them in a few of his movies. The downfall of a man is captured eloquently while he's trying to make a good "sauce". It's a brilliant choice of sequencing on Scorsese's part, and he is able to move through the film with terrific pacing.
A good movie, but not for the faint-of-heart! Watch if you like action, adventure, suspense movies.

Goodfellas...Watch It Again, and Again

Pros: You can watch this movie 1000 times and it would still be fascinating.
Cons: Bad language and violence may offend some. (Not me of course)..
Let me start by saying that 'Mafia Movies' are my absolute favourite films. Coppola and, in this case, Martin Scorsese is absolutely brilliant. The Godfather, The Godfather II, Casino, and Goodfellas top the list of my all time favourites. Andy Garcia is awfully nice to look at in Godfather III as well, but the movie is essentially flawed in that it was completed in the wrong generation and just cannot compare to the first two. I am proud to say that we finally joined the land of DVD. I visited Blockbuster recently for the first time in a year and I was shocked to find that most of the...

Good God - Goodfellas !

Pros: Excellent cast makes for a powerful drama.
Cons: Too many editing mistakes. Lots of swearing.
While some people call Goodfellas the greatest mobster movie of all time very rarely do you hear them talk about the plot. When you boil it down there is a huge jump in them from Henry Hill's youth to his adult life of crime. It also jumped too far into the future for me when Ray Liotta's character is bending over a table snorting coke. Other than that there are too many mistakes in filming. Don't believe me? Pull out your copy of Goodfellas and fast forward to the scene where Henry Hill is in prison and his wife is visiting with the kids and she makes a scene about Janis visiting. Look...

Goodfellas: Best Portrait of Organized Crime!

Pros: Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro steal the show.
Cons: Could have been cut a bit as it had some filler.
"Goodfellas" is Director Martin Scorsese's contribution to the gangster genre. It concerns itself with an inside look at a crime family in New York City. Much like the original gangster movies starring James Cagney and Paul Muni, it showed the rise and fall of the main characters. Ray Liotta plays the protagonist, and the movie mainly follows his viewpoint, which possibly makes it more hard-hitting since he basically plays a milquetoast in this graphic story of modern day hoodlums. Oddly, Liotta is cast as an Irish thug, Henry Hill who can never be a true member of the Mob. Robert DeNiro and..

Goodfellas - So, You Want To Be A Mobster...

Pros: acting, pace, true to life story, cinematography
Cons: where's Henry Hill's family for most of the film?
My grandmother, rest her soul, could tell stories of the gangsters she knew from her neighborhood. Her era was that of "Legs" Diamond and Dutch Schultz and could tell us stories about what it was like. I have to say that as a young child, all that did sound terribly glamorous and wonderful. It was only as I got older that I understood better what being a "gangster" meant and it didn't look as good as the stories she told. Goodfellas is a story told after her era, in the era of my parents and their generation of relatives. By this time, being a gangster was well beyond just protecting those...

Goodfellas- The Art of Perfection

Pros: Acting, story, use of music, narration, near everything
Cons: It took me too long to see it
While trying to decide on what films I should see next, I thought of Goodfellas. After all I enjoy the Martin Scorsese films which I have seen. I though Gangs of New York was an excellent film and I thoroughly enjoyed the Departed. So I decided to rent it. I was mesmerized and I couldn t wait to buy it. Out of the gangster films I have seen (I still need to watch the Godfather) this was one of the most intriguing films I have seen. It really is a classic film and is deserving of its reputation. Henry Hill is a kid living in Brooklyn, every day he sees the mobsters living their glamorous life..
