  How The Civil War Began
Review created: 02/23/08

Gods And Generals is the story of the Civil War up to Gettysburg. The movie features many of the actors who played the same characters in the movie Gettys-burg. Enthusiasts who have seen the Gettysburg film more than a few times will be delighted this "prequel".
These two movies bring the familiar names of old generals, Confederate and Union, out of the history books and into real life. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson especially gets a very favorable treatment. He's a Virginian of great virtue and character in Gods & Generals. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain also gets favorable treatment. The enactment of the battle of Fredericksburg is unforgettable: a senseless attack over open ground that was a preview of the similar foolish Pickett's charge a year later.
I'm only half way through the film Gods & Generals. I know Jackson is shot and dies in the end. The Civil War was a bloody tragedy. That is clear. It is not at all clear how it could have been avoided. Like Ken Burns' series, G&G is a story with no villains. Only sincere and virtuous men --and angry too-- on both sides.

Although somewhat slow-moving at the beginning, Gods and Generals is an excellent depiction of life in the army, and specifically of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Lawrence Chamberlain. Ron Maxwell did an excellent job casting. Stephen Lang's performance is stunning, as is that of Cali Rocha as Mrs. Jackson. The script is well-written, and the movie is quite historically accurate. Definately a wonderful movie for any Civil War lover!

  Understanding The Civil War

This has got to be the best movie about the civil war there is. This movie is very detailed to where anyone can understand what happened during the civil war and why it happened. The cast and the settings were of the best I have ever seen. I already had this movie in my collection and bought it as a gift for my grandpa. I would recommend this movie to anyone that is interested in the history of this country.

Can't Decide Between 'War is Hell' And 'Those Were The Days'- Gods and Generals

Pros:
It's really pretty.

Cons:
It's really pretentious.

'Gods and Generals' is probably the most beautiful movie ever made. Unfortunately, it is hard to avoid qualifying that statement by adding that it isn't quite a movie at all. The catchphrase of the film is "historical accuracy", and if we've ever wondered if historical accuracy can go too far, we have our answer. Much attention is obviously paid to making sure that things look just so, but apart from the slapping together of some awkward, and not truly relevant, dramatic overplay, very little attention is focused on making a movie out of what we're doing. 'Gods and Generals' is the prequel to.

Preserve The Union or Defend States Rights?

Pros:
Some excellent acting & cinematography. A very accurate portrayal of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

Cons:
A bit to long for most folks.

I thought Gods and Generals was a good movie. That being said, It was nowhere near as good as Gettysburg which was released in 1993 and also directed by Ron Maxwell. Keep in mind I believe Gettysburg is among the best war movies ever made. I do not understand why the movie received such harsh ratings and reviews by the critics. I'd like to discuss the historical accuracy of this movie. The movie doesn't run for fifteen minutes without something happening where you think, Oh yeah I remember reading that in some history book. I mean there are a hundred things that happen in the movie that are...

  Gods and Generals-The Neverending Battle
Review created: 02/22/03

Pros:
the landscapes, costumes, that it ended

Cons:
lack of direction, script, unbearable 3hours 36 minutes

I did not heed the warnings from the local entertainment review on Gods and Generals, I ignored the wearied cries of those that braved this movie before me, and I am paying the price today, still disturbed and disappointed. I am not the typical movie reviewer. I am an armchair critic that rarely gets the luxury of seeing a movie that hasn't been released on DVD. I took solace in my jumbo bucket of buttery popcorn and supersize coke last night, while I sat through my night out at the actual movie theater, watching what was supposed to be the greatest Civil War movie of all time. Gods and...

Gods and Generals: A Civil War Film of Epic Proportions.
Review created: 02/23/03

Pros:
Historical accuracy, drama, cool war action, and acting.

Cons:
Too long for most people who don't like history.

Gods and Generals: A Civil War Film of Epic Proportions. The American Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history, with over 620,000 deaths occurring between 1861 and 1865. Accurate portrayals of this conflict in the film industry usually leaves lots of room for criticism, and the accuracy is usually lacking. However, the movie Gods and Generals is a refreshing exception to this. Spanning the years 1861 to 1863, the film is a portrayal of three major battles, and puts a human face on the war, as well as on some of the generals who fought and commanded it. It is quite a lengthy movie,..

Gods and Generals: Cheese Balls Trump Musket Balls

Pros:
The recreation of the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Cons:
Virtually everything else

Civil War buffs generally don t go to see movies about the Civil War to see good movies. They go to see Civil War movies because they can t get enough of the Civil War. If they get a good movie in the process, it s gravy. There is, however, a limit to what even a Civil War buff will endure. Inveterate student that I am of the War between the States, it pains me to no end to declare Enough! after seeing the leaden and wooden Gods and Generals over a stultifying three-hours and 40 minutes that seems to last longer than the conflict itself did. This second part in what is being promoted as the...
