Glory is a great movie which takes place during Civil War. We see what company
of all black soldiers and what job they did. Matthew Brodrick and Densil Washington give remarkable performances.

I bought this movie because I am active in civil war reenacting and I like anything having to do with the civil war. I especially liked the history relating to the black militia and the white military leaders who believed in them. I loved the movie! I would reccommend it to anyone who had an interest in the civil war.

Best movie I have ever seen about the Civil War!!!!
Review created: 03/30/08

This is the most meaningful movie I have ever seen about the Civil War. I am a white man, and this movie is a great testament to the perseverance of all men against racial prejudice and discrimination. It shows that honor, truth, courage, and character ARE NOT the domain of any race.

This is an awesome movie for those that love to watch and learn about our fore-fathers.It also teaches us of prejudices that blacks along with whites had to overcome. If our country is to become a great nation,WE as a people must OVERCOME.

When folks think of the Civil War, they think of white Northerners and Southerners clashing at places like Bull Run, Antetiem, Gettysburg, and Fredricksburg. But there's more to the story!

"Glory" is based on the true story of the 1st all-black unit of soldiers who fought for the Union. Although Northerners opposed slavery, they weren't interested in having blacks as equals either - including the military. The 54th Massachusetts, however, was created in 1862 to "test" whether blacks should be allowed to fight. A white man, Robert Shaw, was put in charge of creating a viable fighting force. It was no easy task ... first fighting for basic supplies like shoes and uniforms .... then it was actually reciving weapons and recieving proper drilling .... followed by the struggle to be permitted to actually fight anywhere. The story winds up at Fort (Battery)Wagner; the 54th Massacusetts lead the Union attack. Although the Union Army ended up in shambles, the 54th Massachusetts proved that black folks can - and will - fight.
(In fact, blacks helped add enough manpower to the Union Army to help defeat the Confederates.)

I like the story because it tells a story that is often forgotten. I've watched the movie several times ... wore out the tape and had to buy the DVD.

I like the movie because of the action and the actors. I wanted to buy this DVD on ebay because the stores didn't have it on sale. At the store Glory was at least $50 for the DVD, and wasn't paying that much for a movie that old.

Probably the best Civil War movie ever made

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. It stars Matthew Broderick so it can't be any good. Didn't you watch Ferris Buehlers Day off? I did, and I liked that movie too. But anyway, how can you take Broderick in a serious role such as a Colonel for a Union regiment? I believe that Broderick did an outstanding job as the actor for Colonel Robert Shaw, even though at times he made it look awkward. I never lost the notion that he was a leader of men in an army.

The other cast members weren't bad either. Co-starring academy award winners Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington as soldiers in the african american regiment. Morgan Freeman gives a wonderful performance as a father-like figure to Broderick's Shaw. Denzel Washington's bad guy turned good role as private Trips should have won him an best acting award.

The thing about this movie which makes it so great is that the setting, the clothing, and music makes the audience feel apart of the time period. Makes them feel like they were smack dab in the middle of the war. Thats how I felt anyway. Its not about killing or honor, its about the man next to you. That is the major theme in any war movie and this one definitely has that theme throughout.

Even if you aren't a Civil War fanatic, if you're a fan of brotherhood and friendship, of compassion for your fellow man. This is the movie for you.

Very interesting & held your interest to the very end. Winner of 3 academy awards & can be viewed full or wide screen in three different languages. A must see with an all star cast. Sorry we waited so long to see it.

THE MOST MOVING CIVIL WAR MOVIE EVER MADE
Review created: 07/25/04
by: mcmaster -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
An American Civil War masterpiece.

Cons:
None

Colonel Shaw [volunteering his regiment to lead the attack on Fort Wagner]There's more to fighting than rest, sir. There's character. There's strength of heart. You should have seen us in action two days ago. We were a sight to see! We'll be ready, sir. When do you want us? Glory is one of the finest films ever made pertaining to the American Civil War. The film was based on letters that Colonel Robert Shaw wrote. The all-star cast did an excellent piece of work in making this Civil War classic. The directing by Edward Zwick is exceptional. The score is very good as well. The story was about..

Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory (Black History Month W/O)
Review created: 02/23/03
by: waynio -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Acting & casting; moving script & music; realistic battle scenes; cinematography

Cons:
Minor historical inaccuracies

"Once let the black man get upon his person the brass letters, U.S., let him get an eagle on his button, and a musket on his shoulder and bullets in his pockets, and there is no power on earth which can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship in the United States." - Frederick Douglass Normally I have ambivalent feelings about war movies, because when Hollywood Does History, it often reflects the truth as accurately as a carnival fun-house mirror. And in the case of the Civil War, historians continue to debate the real causes of the conflict and whether the war was just or inevitable.

  Emotionally Moving Piece of History
Review created: 07/08/04
by: nikefreak -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Tremendously moving, great acting, superb picture and score, historically important

Cons:
None that I can see, other than if you can't stomach war violence

I really don't know what inspired me to write a review on this movie, since it is 15 years old, but I feel as though this is one of the best war movies ever made, next to Saving Private Ryan and Gettysburg. Plus, it shows that at least one person out of my detached-from-history generation, ie, "Generation X," has a deep respect for history and the men who brought us freedom. Another reason I wrote this is because I have an interest in the Civil War, stemming from my father. He has been a reenactor for many years, portraying the men exactly with replica uniforms, rifles, tents, equipment and...

  Stirring, richly photographed genre movie
Review created: 01/02/01
by: Stephen_Murray-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
cinematography, passionate performance by Denzel Washington

Cons:
formulaic shaping-up the mismatched soldiers, and painful to see them squandered

The major puzzle for me about this movie is trying to decide whether the title is meant ironically. I don't think so, because that would diss' the African American soldiers whose lives were squandered. On the other hand, the move certainly vividly illustrates the most famous pronouncement of one of the most prominent generals from the war portrayed -- that war is hell. A suicidal charge on an impregnable fort (Wagner) is as good an exemplification as any, but I think we are supposed to admire the gallantry rather than focus on the insanity of the attack. The novelty in the genre of the army ..

Glory: The 54th Massachusetts Fights for Freedom!
Review created: 09/05/05
by: Ironcladd -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
An outstanding movie documenting the history of the 54th Massachusetts.

Cons:
None.

Glory: The 54th Massachusetts Fights for Freedom! By James P. Zaworski The American Civil War, fought from 1861-1865, was one of the most significant historical events in the history of the United States of America, as well as the most tragic, and most costly, in terms of the numbers of lives lost. Its causes were profound and many. Its effect was profound and many. The main cause of the War Between the States was the institution of slavery. States rights also played a role, but the despicable institution of slavery was at the heart of the war. The war was fought by many different peoples,...
