This was one of my FAVORITE books in gradeschool almost 30 years ago! I still remember it well. I would check it out often from the school library. The tree was SO KIND to the little boy. I couldn't understand why the boy didn't return the kindness to the tree as he grew older! Couldn't he see the tree loved him?? In the very beginning he was nice to the tree and would swing from its branches and rest in its shade- they loved each other and spent time together. But as time went on he just took, and took, and TOOK everything the tree had to offer- and he offered nothing in return.

But surprisingly, the tree did NOT get mad at the boy and continued to show LOVE and generosity in every way it had! In the end, the boy realized the error of his ways, and went back to the tree once more. Only then, the boy was a shriveled up old man, and the tree, reduced to a stump, had nothing more to give. Very pitiful tale. I really don't know why I loved the story so much, because it made me cry! I wanted so much for that little boy to realize, before it was too late, that the tree LOVED him and NEEDED him, and that he should have been NICER to the TREE!

As an adult, I can appreciate the moral tale and parable hidden in the story. Couldn't have been better written or illustrated. Very touching, and to the point. This book should be part of every fine children's library.

I love Shel Silverstein's books. He was a genius who captured life's experiences in what appear, at first glance, to be simple children's stories.

The Giving Tree is a story about a boy and a tree. In the beginning of the story, the tree is the center of the boy's existance. As the boy ages, he finds "more important" things that take him away from the tree. As an old man, he returns to the tree and is content just to be with the tree again.

My children love the story as the simple one that it is, but I appreciate it's deeper meaning. I cry every time I read this story aloud to my children.

I love this book because it has a great message. It is one for parents and teachers to read to children. My teenage sister still loves the book--her eyes lite up when she saw it on my book shelf. This is a book that should be in everyone's collection!

A great read and life lesson
Review created: 04/04/08

I purchased this book years ago for my son. I thought it was a great lesson on the importance of giving. I recently purchased another one to give to my grandson. It is a lesson of life and how we need to take time and enjoy what and who we have in our lives. This book is timeless and relevant for all.

I bought this book because my daughter-in-law expressed interest in the Silverstein books since she was a young girl at home. She was very happy to get the Giving Tree to read to her children.

As for me, I found the book delightful, thought provoking, funny and just a fun book to read.

This is a childrens story about a tree that gives and gives and always has something to give to a little boy she loves. The tree is happy just making the boy happy. I bought this and gave it to my mother for Valentines Day since she is the epitome of the tree. Buy it and give it to someone that has given so much to you. I'm sure they will be touched.

I love this book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 out of 5 is because it can be sad for small children. I recommend it for at least age 5 and above. It's a great story about unconditional love and unconditional giving. The sad part is about being taken advantage of which small children may not understand. It's a great lesson, though, for older children.

"And The Tree Was Self-Destructively Obsessed With The Boy..."
Review created: 08/28/07
by: joyfulgirl91 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A beautiful, soothing read for bedtime, and adored by my two-year-old child.

Cons:
A tedious read-aloud with an uncomfortable, bizarre story.

"Once there was a tree ... and she loved a little boy." I think I am supposed to love Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree". Although my feelings toward the book are complicated, in many ways, I do love it. Mothers have read this story of love and sacrifice out loud since 1964, so who am I to raise a critical eyebrow? Actually, I'm in good company. The plot and message of "The Giving Tree" are among the most analyzed in children's literature. Discussions about whom The Tree and The Boy might symbolize and what aspect of the human condition their relationship might be a metaphor for abound in...

The Giving Tree...Shel Silverstein and My 1000th Review
Review created: 03/30/08
by: kamel622-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Books

Pros:
*Beautiful meaningful book!

Cons:
*Not a one!

Every once in a while I m reminded of a book that I ve enjoyed in the past, but have forgotten about. The other day my husband Michael brought home a book that is a true a book of unconditional love. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is a simple short book that says so much. While this is a review of this beautiful book it also serves as a way to share my feelings about love, parenthood, childhood and God. In trying to decide what to write my 1,000 review of, I decided that the warm loving message of this book was perfect to help celebrate a milestone. One of the things I love about this...

The Giving Tree: Is it Bad to Make Children Think?
Review created: 05/31/00
by: Horswispr -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
important message about taking love for granted

Cons:
could be disturbing to younger (2 to 5) children

The 60's were a great time for classic Children's Literature. With the possible exception of Milne's The World of Pooh, Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (reviewed elsewhere) is my all-time favorite. Shel Silverstein's (1964) The Giving Tree is another classic that all children should experience at some time. But it is not a reassuring book, with a wish fulfillment and a happy ending, like Wild Things. It is a children's tragedy; a cautionary tale which should be read with parents, and discussed with parents. Like Where The Wild Things Are, The Giving Tree begins with few words, suitable for.

Great children's book for all ages
Review created: 02/03/00
by: KMINER -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Wonderful book for all ages

Cons:
None for me

Shel Silverstein is quite well known in children's literature and poetry, mainly because his works appeal to both children and adults. One of my favorites is The Giving Tree. "Once there was a tree... and she loved a little boy." ... this is the beginning of a simply written, black and white simply illustrated classic story of the bond of friendship and love. It's a story of a boy who comes to a tree at different stages of his life and leans on the tree for support. In turn the tree gives of herself all that she has to offer, as this makes her truly happy. As the boy grows into a teenager,...

The Tree That Keeps On Giving
Review created: 08/29/07
by: jsmorris -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Good lessons on sacrifices

Cons:
None

THE GIVING TREE is wonderful because everyone can connect to it and it brings up important issues for discussion with both older children and younger children. These issues include sacrifice, true friendship, and conserving our natural resources. The book features a boy and a tree as the only characters. As the boy grows up he comes back to visit the tree and asks for things on each visit. He wants things such as money, a house, and a boat. The tree sacrifices herself to give the boy what he wants without question. First the tree gives the boy her apples to sell for money. Then she gives her..
