Pros:
rich, textured, serious
Cons:
wants to live in a world between slick exploitation and serious drama
When this film was released, back in 2005, there was a pre-release scandal involving a billboard showing rapper 50 Cent with a microphone in one hand and a handgun in the other. Not surprisingly, its release was attended by a near-unanimous critical thrashing. Nearly three-quarters of the nation's film critics panned the film, stating 50 Cent couldn't act, the story was nothing new and the facts had been changed along the way. Even I, sometime defender of lost causes, stayed away, believing all that bad press. Well, now that I've seen it, I'm of a different mind. Get Rich or Die Tryin' is not.
