Gerry (2004, VHS)

  Gerry
Review created: 06/21/04

Pros:
cinematography and score

Cons:
The plot, storyline and script.

This one ranks right up there with, Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes. I have not seen a movie this lousy for a long time. When I see names on the cover such as Matt Damon and Casey Affleck I think, good actors, good movie! I could not have been more wrong. Perhaps the movie was just too deep for me or maybe it was just a bummer. Gerry (2002) Directed by Gus Van Sant Written by Matt Damon

Pros:
Direction, Performances, Cinematography, Improvisatory Storyline, Sound, Music, & Dialogue.

Cons:
Pacing's Slow at Times & Some Will Find This Extremely Boring.

One of the finest independent filmmakers from the 1980s, Gus Van Sant has always challenged the world with his view on drugs, sexuality, angst, and intelligence. From his 1985 debut film Mala Noche, he would embark into a widely-acclaimed career with two landmark films for 1989's Drugstore Cowboy and 1991's My Own Private Idaho. After a misstep with 1993's Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Van Sant returned in 1995 with the media satire To Die For that made Australian actress Nicole Kidman a superstar. In 1997, Van Sant reached a peak with Good Will Hunting that featured comedian Robin Williams in.

Pros:
Direction, cinematography, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck.

Cons:
The scenes that were shot in Hollywood studios.

GERRY opens with a beautiful shot of a car driving down an isolated road. Roughly two minutes into this same shot, I knew this was not a typical Hollywood movie. The entire scene lasted about ten minutes, and there was probably two lines of dialogue. The most common complaint among people who didn t like GERRY was that it moved very slowly. It did, and it would be arrogant of me to deny this. But, this isn t necessarily a hindrance. In 100 minutes, GERRY tells the story of two friends (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck), both nicknamed Gerry , who get lost in their wilderness. As hours turn into...

Two men go into the desert and That's about it

Pros:
Beautiful cinematography, unique idea/concept, a few good scenes.

Cons:
Lame dialogue, Depthless characters, overlong and very very dull.

"Gerry" is a story of two men who decide to take a hiking trip to see something. In the process they get lost. That in a nutshell sums up the story. What would've made for a decent 15-20 minute short however is expanded into a 100 minute movie and in the end the film just proves to be maddening and quite dull. "Gerry" stars Casey Affleck and Matt Damon as two men named "Gerry". We start the movie off watching them in their car as they drive to see something. What are they going to see? Who knows! There are no real details here. In fact if what I read is correct most of the dialogue was...

  Hike Film Gone Awry
Review created: 04/07/03
by: BobLeep1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Interesting Concept, Good Acting, Technically Exciting, Beautiful Scenery

Cons:
Boring, Tedious Storytelling, Bring No-Doze

Gerry is one of the strangest films I ve seen in a long while, and given the talent involved, it s also one of the biggest disappointments. Directed by Gus Van Zant, who is known for some great films (Good Will Hunting), as well as his share of clunkers (Even Cowgirls Get the Blues), Gerry definitely weighs in on the clunky side of the spectrum. Gerry (Matt Damon) and Gerry (Casey Affleck) are buddies on some sort of southwestern road trip. I say some sort of because who they are and where they are going is never explained, and I guess not really necessary. This film is light on character...
