Thar's Gems In Them Thar CDs - (Aerosmith Write-Off)

Pros:
Great compilation of "B side" tracks.

Cons:
Some might not like the lack of "real" hits. (But they would be an idiot.)

Without a doubt, Aerosmith was one of the biggest bands to come out of the 1970s (and given their legendary excesses involving drugs and alcohol, one might say they barely made it). After a period of drying out , the band reappeared in the late 1980s, for a second trip around the rock music world as conquerors. With the revival of the band s popularity, the compilation album, Aerosmith Gems was released to acquaint newer listeners with some of the more unlikely tunes from the bands early days. Track listing: 1. Rats in The Cellar 2. Lick and A Promise 3. Chip Away at the Stone 4. No Surprise..

Pros:
Rockin' good album tracks that you won't hear on your classic rock station.

Cons:
I make a really bad pun at the end of this review... apologies in advance.

Aerosmith's Gems is a rare beast. It's chock-full of previously released material, even some songs you may have heard on the radio, but this ain't no freakin' greatest hits. Nuh-uh, Jack. No, with Gems, Aerosmith does something more bands should do--they cull some of the best songs from their albums and release them in album form for all to enjoy. The idea is so simple, yet so brilliant. We've all heard the hit songs, in some cases more than we ever wanted to. So why not take songs that are just as good and release them? And some of these songs ARE just as good as Aerosmith's more...

Pros:
The better of the two Aerosmith Best-Of offerings released by Columbia in the 80s.

Cons:
It doesn't really matter, but the gems on the CD cover don't look real.

In 1988, one year after Aerosmith re-emerged commercially on Geffen with Permanent Vacation, and two years after they had a smash hit with RUN-DMC with the re-make of the 1976 hit Walk This Way, Columbia records decided it was time to assemble a sequel to 1980 s Aerosmith s Greatest Hits. Aerosmith were big again, and Columbia wanted to cash in. Gems proves to be quite a catch for fans who want to try out Aerosmith s 70s material without having to buy each release. And to Columbia s credit, when Aerosmith perform their live shows, the 70s portion of their setlist are the songs that appear on..

Pros:
Finally, a retrospective with "Train Kept A Rollin" and "No Surprize."

Cons:
Not truly a con...needs to be purchased with GREATEST HITS 1973-1979.

INTRODUCTION Hello, everybody. This is John Bishop typing, the DeadMilkboy of Epinions.com. Before I launch into the following review, I d like to mention that this is part of a series of reviews I m writing based on one of the greatest American rock n roll bands in history, AEROSMITH! I d like to thank Aerocat (another Arizona native, bless her soul) for giving me the chance to do something other than write reviews of classic B-movies and current CD/DVD releases, and besides AEROSMITH F*CKING ROCKS! Posted here is the URL to Aerocat s official Epinions.com Aerosmith Write-Off page, and a...

More of the Best of Aerosmith
Review created: 07/14/01

Pros:
12 lesser-known classics on one CD; Great selection.

Cons:
A few gems missing, but thats inevitable.

Although their original Greatest Hits album is one of the best-selling 'best of' collections ever released, it was not really a fitting summary of their 'classic' 70's period. It was quite short, and left off a few singles as well as essential album tracks. For those on a tight budget or who just simply don't like to bother with large volumes of albums, a follow-up compilation was a very good idea. It took about eight years, but Columbia eventually did put together a second record documenting the band's golden years - and they did a very good job. See, at one time, Aerosmith didn't put all...
