First off - map data is stored in a microSD card (aka transflash). With a very entry level GPS this is unavoidable. It comes with a 128 that can handle about 5 states though I bought it knowing I would also buy a 512 card which fits entire East & West coasts though not much in the middle thereafter. If you can't handle that you'll have to either go higher end or get more microSD cards (recommend going higher end and buying a model with all map data stored internally in the unit). I ended up buying the 512 microSD with an adapter so I can use the included 128mb micro-SD as a normal SD in my digital camera, which I needed anyway.
Data transfer from your computer to the unit (via usb) can be VERY slow, but, I know that so I bought a larger card so the probability of me needed to do that is lessened. (note: I bought it during the black friday week from Wal-Mart for $200...great deal!)
Navigation works great. Detour function if you run into construction or an accident. Have used it many times while driving to find the nearest dunkin donuts. Have used it on work travel. I left without any directions and easily found my hotel via the stored data. You can review the turns prior to actually going anywhere...when you click on a specific turn it then shows you the map of that area which can be very useful.
Everything through the click-wheel. Its actually still easy to input an address to drive to. As your filling the address it sorts the available streets using the characters you type. When your close enough you can stop clicking letter-by-letter and just click on the street name in the sorted list.
I call it 'one thumb' operation. When its attached and I'm driving I can't click the wheel with my pointer finger as the wheel moves a little changing my selection. Annoying but I can deal as I can just remove it from the attachment very easily.
Another annoyance is when I change the map scale. I tend to zoom out but when I approach a turn it zooms into the turn. This feature I like. But, when I'm done with that turn it doesn't zoom back out to the previous view size.
Love the size. I can remove it to input/search and also to store away if I feel iffy about the area. I bought a camera bag to store it in along with the power cord (if necessary) and the usb transfer cord (though I don't need that to be portable anymore).
The 'approximate arrival time' is great and works really really well. The 'miles to next turn' is very accurate. It also reminds you about 1mile up to a turn that it is coming up. Note: you have to start moving before it can verbally tell you turn right/left especially in parking lots.
GPS works really well even in 'bad' weather. Worked without any loss of signal during recent major Northeast snow storm. Have not used the WAAS function (a for of differential GPS via FAA geostationary satellites, basically it just makes GPS more accurate, my Garmin eTrex can get accuracy of 8ft with WAAS) as I don't think its really that necessary for car navigation.
The Black & White isn't a big deal to deal with. There is some enhancement to having a color screen (i3) but I don't think the extra price justifies it, at least not for me.
When on external power, and the power is removed, is goes into auto-shut off (if there are batteries in it) countdown, but, not all cigarette lighters/power adapters lose power when the vehicle is off. So simply disconnect either from the unit or from the power source. Inevitable.
Well i picked up this unit for under 100 dollars so that alone is a plus. It is very compact and easy to use. It has all the basic freatures as some of the more expensive gps' out there and is half the cost. I would like to buy a more advanced GPS, but im deffinetly glad i purchased this unit.
Thought it was good for the money. I like the size of it. I don't like the fact that it is not up to date on the streets. A street in my subdivision is over two years old and it does not show it as being completed. It is nice for a beginner or someone looking to guide them in the right direction. I'm in real estate and I probably need something more up to date.
IT DOES'T HAVE THE BUILT IN MAPS THAT MAKES IT EASIER FOR THE REGULAR PERSON TO OPERATE. IT IS JUST A LITTLE MORE TROUBLE BUT FOR THE PRICE IT IS VERY GOOD FOR WHAT USE I HAVE FOR IT.
The i2 is a great tool for a person who doesn't travel extensivly. Its, small. The directions are precise and accurate. It sits securely on the window. It serves my purpose. I would recommend upgrading for anyone who travels a lot or gets lost often. The i2 is smaller than the palm of your hand. It is difficult to see the instructions and details when driving. It isn't in color. It doesn't hold a lot of memory. I down loaded 5 souther states and it was at capacity. I'm not very computer literate but the instructions for down loading the maps was easy to understand. If I ever need to purchase another GPS system I will probably select one that is already programed and loaded with the map of US.
Since this is my first GPS navigating device, maybe I don't have a basis for comparison, but this one has all the same features that my friends & families' $300-500 GPS navigators have. (with the exception of touch-screen & color display). It has always acquired the sat. signal in less than 1 minute even in a thunderstorm. While I confess that I've only used it for a short time, I've had no problems whatsoever at this point. I love the small size. It doesn't take up very much room in my windshield and is not distracting me while I'm driving. The "points of interest" are.. well...interesting. I've learned from reading through them that there is a museum 7 miles from my house that I never knew existed.(I've lived here for 5 years) I also very much liked the price,(Though I realize that they'll probably cost half as much in 2 years) they are very affordable. I would would recommend this product to someone who is: planning a vacation, travels often by car, or delivery people.
Programming, using and carrying the Garmin GPS is terrific. Great price and the easy to use. Simply enter your destination- a map is displayed plus it talks to you. Mistake proof. Can't get lost using it. I have bought three (3) units for my family. Can't think of anything I don't like about it.
The reason I bought this model was to get the feel of using a GPS.Ithas been a great help and works like others on market. When you go places it feels good to have direction to bring you up to the door of the place you want to be,very reliable wished I had bought one sooner.
Not only do they sell a good face, but they also sell good products. I wanted to find a GPS that was good and affordable. I did and I love it. With my tax return, I am actually thinking of upgrading already! Thanks
My wife and I enjoy driving around being directed by gps to locations we do not know. This seller was great and cooperative. I have now bought two gps, one for my wife and one for my daughter and me for them.
i did not like this item at all..............it was WAY too basic for me...had a wheel and then a button to push to enter the letters and numbers.......i ended up buying one with a touch screen that was much simpler to use...
I bought two of these units as gifts for family members after reading some consumer-related reports that indicated this unit provides the accuracy and features of some of Garmin's more expensive models, but for a lower-cost. I have not been disappointed! I have a Garmin Streetpilot c330 and c340 and the Streetpilot i2 provides many of the same functional user features of the c330. There ARE differences, of course. The i2 has a much smaller screen (about the size of a baseball) and it's primarily a gray/black screen. All menu functions are controlled by wheels and buttons (vs. touchscreen for more expensive models). Most of the functionality of the unit is the same as for the more expensive models. Turn-by-turn audio directions are given, linked to the visual street names on the mapping function of the screen. Since the screen is smaller, users may have a more difficult time seeing the street names. Being able to "repeat or replay" the audio directions requires more steps with the flywheel and button functions than with the touchscreen units. Another difference with the i2 vs. the higher-end models: the i2 requires the user to load the maps needed onto the transflash card and then insert the card into the GPS unit. Maps are not preloaded with this model. I strongly recommend getting at least a 1GB card so that the entire US/North American continent can be loaded (really helpful for anyone who needs to travel beyond their own regional area).
All in all, this is an excellent buy for someone who is just getting a taste of a GPS unit and doesn't want to make a huge investment until they become familiar with the features of various units. I've found that Garmin's maps have been up-to-date and accurate, regardless of the area of the US in which I've used the unit. I've also had contact with the Garmin Technical Assistance department on a few occasions and I've found the staff to be knowledgeable, helpful, and prompt. I highly recommend this unit and the Garmin technology.
Easy to use, very entry level automotive. Sometimes makes you do strange things. Recalculates quick, but can lose its signal around tall buildings, and in long tunnels.
I bought the Garmin Streetpilot because i'm an insurance agent who need to get to several addresses after each other & within a time frame.
the Garmin has to a large extent done this. it was also able to immediately re-route once a turning is missed so one can continue to destination.
what i dislike about it is that it is not a touch-tone electronic device and so makes it clumsy to enter addresses etc.
it is also not possible to enter several addresses that are sequential, neither can one enter a zip code and hope similar addresses will pop up instantly for editing in order to save time.
also one cannot proceed without having full info about address. mere knowledge of street is not sufficient to make the garmin funtion
THIS PRODUCT IS AMAZING! SMALL AND COMPACT YET EASY TO USE IN OR OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE. GREAT FOR TRIPS WITH THE FAMILY.THIS GPS SYSTEM SAVES TIME NOT HAVING TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS OR FUMBLE AROUND WITH A PAPER MAP.HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.
This is probably the cheapest automotive GPS available (and I bought it used on eBay, so even cheaper) but, in my view, while it may lack some bells and whistles, it has the same basic software, NavTec, and accomplishes the same tasks the bigger, more expensive GPS appliances do and is a much better value. It comes with enough memory to download several large nearby states and additional memory is nominal. You spend a few minutes setting it up using your PC and then entering your destination before you take off. It will take you there, cross-country or to an unfamiliar neighborhood in the next town. It might not help you find Elvis but it will get you to Graceland without a hitch. A black and white screen, very clear and readable, and a pleasant voice giving directions as you drive (my wife and I both remarked that the voice was nicer than in her brother-in-law's $2,000 built in unit). We are very pleased.
