  ALright for HD

I was expecting more with this being HD DVD--I love this movie--(Being ex military I can kinda laugh now at the first 30 minutes or so of the boot camp training) The movie really didn't look any better than regular DVD and the sound quality was real low--Had to turn on the volume 2xs what I do with regular DVD--I have a player that plays both HD and Blu-ray, so I figured I'd stock up on the HD since everyone seemed to be panicking and selling HD at almost nothing--Got great Deals at Best Buy when they dumped theirs---Anyway, it was worth the $8 to have an extra copy..

This movie is so intense. The realities of training for war & then fighting for a lost cause really show through. Awesome cast, as if they were each born for their specific roles. 5 Stars Hands down...

Pros:
Very realistic movie along with some awesome acting!

Cons:
None

Full Metal Jacket is the most realistic movie ever made to date about (basic training) "Boot Camp". Full Metal Jacket (1987) Directed By Stanley Kubrick Matthew Modine as Pvt. Joker R. Lee Ermey as Gunnery SFC. Hartman Vince D'Onofrio as Pvt. Leonard 'Pyle' Lawrence Arliss Howard as Pvt. Cowboy Full Metal Jacket is one of the better more realistic Vietnam movies. It is definitely the most accurate movie I have ever seen regarding boot camp. Drill Instructor Hartman is played by R. Lee Ermey (History Channels Mail-Call) who was in fact, a real Marine Drill Sergeant during the Vietnam conflict..

Pros:
some performances, artful tracking shots, apt music

Cons:
English Vietnam, conventional, somewhat defanging source

I think that Stanley Kubrick's last move, "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999) , is hideously bad and that he is very overrated as a "genius" film director. I admire the movies he directed during the late-1950s and early-to-mid 1960s: "Paths of Glory," some of "Spartacus," "Lolita," and "Dr. Strangelove." Those movies (and "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining") were among other merits, very well-cast. Kubrick's other post-"Strangelove" movies have some very dubious casting. I don't accept Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as intimates in "Eyes Wide Shut" (yes, I am aware they were married). Ryan O'Neal is all.

Pros:
classic, definitive, iconic

Cons:
uneven in tone and style

Art isn't just about the message. It's also about the medium, the specific portal through which that message is conveyed. Some media are better at expressing action, or color, or thought. Some media are more portable, while others are more visceral. Some are great because they're live, or tactile, or three-dimensional. Others are great because they're cheap or easily accessed or simply more permanent. I speak of this because it's important to know your medium, particularly what it's good at, and what it can or cannot do with ease. As media go, film is a redheaded stepchild whose original...

Full Metal Jacket: Dull Mental Racket
Review created: 02/16/00

Pros:
R. Lee Ermey

Cons:
Pointless second half.

I guess I don't understand Stanley Kubrick. Although I liked "Spartacus", "Paths of Glory", "2001", and, to a lesser extent, "A Clockwork Orange", I cannot find the greatness my fellow Epinions reviewers find in "Full Metal Jacket". The characters in FMJ seem cut out of cardboard, two dimensional, especially Mathew Modine. What a joke for him to be cast in the lead! Unless Kubrick's intent was to showcase a lame talent for two plus hours! Like I said, I don't understand Stanley Kubrick... For those of you who have been on another planet for the past decade or so, FMJ is a play in two acts;...

Full Metal Jacket: Is That You John Wayne?

Pros:
Best Boot Camp Scenes Ever

Cons:
Combat Scenes Are Jumbled

The opening scene to this movie brought forward a tidal wave of memories for me. We see a group of teenage American men getting ready for boot camp by having their heads shaved with less care than a Sheep farmer takes while husking the herd. My experience was humiliating as the barber shaved a small triangle on the top of my head. It was an exact replica of a women s forbidden fruit. He then mercilessly pushed my head downward, boldly stating to every recruit in the room; Take a good look at this boys, you won t be seeing one of these for while! Full Metal Jacket has the realism of military...
