This is a great series, very entertaining. Plus you can sneak some education in on your kid without them even knowing it. My 9 yr old loves it. We have the set on video and just had to replace it on dvd.

Very well made. If you have a lot of space interests, and like the history in mankinds greatest quest, you will like this whole series. From my knowledge of the moon missions, each episode is very accurate. I took it on vacation and watched one dvd each night. Any history buff will enjoy this.

fantastic HBO series concerning the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions of the 60's and 70's. I already owned this set, but purchased and extra to give to my father. Breaks down the entire goings on of NASA during this time with an all star cast, and hosted by Tom Hanks. Should be required viewing for School Systems.

To The Moon (from Earth that is)

Okay, I have to be honest here, I bought this DVD box set for my brother-in-law as a birthday present. My sister reports that this is the best gift he received this year. All reviews that I have read for this product have placed phenomenal praise upon this HBO production.

I'm told that "From the Earth to the Moon" is a great introduction to the space race and that my brother-in-law and his family enjoyed every minute of it. Therefore, it's well worth adding to your collection.

  A DVD worth buying
Review created: 02/27/08

I work at the Kennedy Space Center, and after watching this I notice more about the history of the space program, that in the past I just overlooked. I would recommend this program to anybody that has any interest at all, in either the history of the space program, or the few great men that gave so much for the future of everyone.

It was a good series about the moon and the atomspere. There was really nothing to dislike about it as long as you like that kind of information. Because it is a Tom Hanks movie and I am a collector of his work.

I had seen this on TV years ago and recently saw one episode on a commercial channel and loved it! Can't stand commercials though, (even with TIVO), so decided to buy and it is worth every penny. I plan to watch it again with my 8-year old granddaughter. Bet she will like it too since it is ageless and timeless.

  Slight Oscar correction
Review created: 06/02/07

Just writing for clarification. Tom Hanks did NOT win an Oscar playing Jim Lovell. He won two Best Actor Oscars, however, for "Philadelphia" and "Forrest Gump." Mr. Hanks was GREAT as Jim Lovell, but I don't even think he was nominated for "Apollo 13." -- Schlaje

  Entertaining and Historical
Review created: 12/07/06
by:

This is an excellent miniseries - it has great actors, but it also stays true to the historical records of the Apollo missions. There is drama, there is comedy, and it is all true. Every episode of the series is great, but my personal favorites are from missions usually not focused upon: Apollo 9, Apollo 12, and Apollo 14. There is also a great episode that is about the wives of the astronauts.

I bought a set for my home last year and bought another set to give to my father-in-law for Christmas this year. Worth every penny!

  Best miniseries ever!
Review created: 07/02/06

I remember when this miniseries was released on HBO, and I was riveted. The acting is superb as is the direction. It shows a time of inspiration, of hope, of enthusiasm. It shows how thousands of brilliant, dedicated, and patriotic scientists and pilots who labored tirelesssly for nine years to make JFK`s fsmous deadline, some of whom gave their lives for this great cause. It is heartwarming to such effort and technology applied to something besides war. I cherish every moment of this great series.

  A Must See Movie
Review created: 06/08/06

This is one of the finest pieces of movie making that I've ever seen. It chronicles the US Space program from the early days of the first manned expeditions to the walk on the moon. The acting and direction is suberb. The music is also incredible, it fills you with emotion which helps bring you into the movie. You will laugh and you will cry watching this movie, it brings out so many emotions. There are 12 parts in this movie each directed by a different director, like Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Frank Marshall, and more. I personally have seen this movie 6 times and could sit and watch it another 6 times. It originally was broadcast on HBO as a mini-series and won the Golden Globe for Best Mini Series and an Emmy for Outstanding Mini Series. This is a MUST SEE movie for anyone who is interested in space exploration and superb movie making. After renting this movie 5 times to watch it, I finally broke down and bought a copy of it.

  Up Up and Away
Review created: 05/24/01
by: deaser26 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The Comprehensive work on the space program

Cons:
More detail for me....

From the earth to the Moon tells the whole story of America s space program. If a person combined the first couple episodes of Earth to the Moon with Tom Wolfe s The Right Stuff, you would have a brilliant beginning. Next replace the Apollo 13 episode of ETTM with the Hank s movie Apollo 13 and then let the rest speak for itself. That would be the perfect mix. Several of the episodes of ETTM I have watched over and over again. A particular favorite is Spider, which tells the story of the creation of the LEM vehicle by the Grumman Corporation. Matt Craven who was brilliant played the head of...

Go On a Voyage From the Earth to the Moon
Review created: 10/27/00
by: sweaver -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Fascinating stories, good historical accuracy

Cons:
Some language, a few dull spots (about 20 minutes of 11 hours)

Space had become somewhat passe'. Then Ron Howard made Apollo 13, Tom Hanks won an Oscar playing the mission's commander Jim Lovell, the movie was a critical and box office success, and a wave of nostalgia made space hot again. His own interest piqued and the iron piping hot, Hanks pitched HBO an idea for a mini-series: a retrospective telling the story of the Apollo missions in a docudrama style, similar to the movie. The idea eventually became the 12-part series, From the Earth to the Moon, based in part on the book, A Man on the Moon. First off, this is a fabulous series. The 12 original..

Review created: 04/03/00
by: lpmiller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Wonderful acting, storytelling, pure adventure

Cons:
12 hours of it.

From Earth to the Moon is a wonderful DVD presentation of the critically acclaimed HBO series, and no collector of space or DVD's should be without it. Chronicling the story of NASA and its challenge of bringing America to the Moon, the story unfolds smoothly, with each mission from the tragic Apollo 1 right through the last moon visit treated as being just as important as Neil Armstrong's first, tentative steps on our sister world. The DVD presentation is very well done, supporting Dolby 5.1 - though there isn't a lot of rear channel effects - each rocket launch is glorious, with deep...

  A miniseries masterpiece
Review created: 11/27/00
by: wytman -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent centerpiece to a space film collection

Cons:
comes as a complete set and will cost you at least $75

When HBO first ran commercials and previews for From the Earth to the Moon in late 1997 (Christmas) I knew I would be watching that spring when it began. I must confess, I am a NASA junkie - I go to the website often and I love to read/see just about everything I can concerning NASA and space exploration. I already was a fan of other "space race" films Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff (a favorite from my childhood) and this miniseries would be as good things could get for me. Episodes From the Earth to the Moon was spread out in 12 separate Episodes covering the whole of the Apollo program which.

by: BlackBear -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Best Apollo film series ever

Cons:
It is too short!

When From the Earth to the Moon first aired on HBO a couple years ago, I watched it as a matter of course. After all, I grew up reading the newspaper clippings of what has to be mankind's greatest achievement, putting a man on the moon. The set comes in a handsome display case that holds six tapes, each in its own sleeve. The cassette sleeves are designed in such a way that they form a picture when placed into the larger case in the correct order. Each individual sleeve has a protective cover flap that opens to reveal a small summery of each of the two episodes on the tape. Each of these 12...
