  Great Movie

One of the best sports movies ever made. It is a bit slow moving and it could do without some scenes but I think it did a good job re-enacting a true story.

Most Similar to Varsity Blues. Its an "OK" Film. 5/10
Review created: 04/03/08

Friday Night Lights can be best compared to Varsity Blues. The kids enjoy watching it, but as adults, we dont feel it was very well written, and it didnt hold our interests. It doesnt offer much action or comedy, and is somewhat bland. If you did happen to have already watched Friday Night Lights and enjoyed it, you'll definitely LOVE Varsity Blues.

Rent It or Buy It? We say RENT IT FIRST.

Our Overall Rating: 5/10

  FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2005, DVD
Review created: 06/06/07
by:

I bought the Friday Night Lights (2005, DVD because it was based on a true-life story about a high school football team. I loved the way Tim McGraw played a father who was so out of character with the type of father he is in real life. I had never heard of Boobie Miles before; but Derrick Luke made him real to me. His caretaker-relative took a lot of pride in Boobie's performances on the football field and seemed to feel his pain when Boobie suffered injuries. In spite of his injuries on the football field, he was able to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward. Billy Bob Thornton was absolutely terrific as the tough yet patient and loving head football coach. He not only demanded the best of individual players but also taught them to care for one another even if they did not win every game. I also like Billy Bob as a husband to his adorable wife who supported him in his chosen field.
Finally, I rented this DVD prior to buying it. Even though I do not consider myself a football fan, I have watched this movie many times and have not grown tired of it.

This movie was good. The only problem I found was that it was slow getting into the point of the movie. I didn't like Tim McGraw playing the hardazz dad. That just doesn't do very well for him. He is too good looking and I would never in a million years believe him to be this type of person. Otherwise, movie was good.

This movie is going to be one of the best sports movies ever. This is based on the actual events of the Permian Panthers of Odessa Texas. This movie has some of the best football scenes I have ever seen. This is an excellent movie for football lovers. You must get this one.

In Quest Of The Perfect Season
Review created: 10/17/04
by: pmills1210-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
A gripping portrait of a football program and its supporters

Cons:
Some of the scenes may disturb viewers

High school football fans all over the United States often dream of the perfect season. My high school was fortunate to have one of those in the years I was there. The perfect season for Coach Gary Gaines, though, was more than just a dream; it was an expectation. Coach Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) was in his second season at the helm of one of the most celebrated football programs in the state of Texas, at Permian High School in Odessa. They had won four championships, starting in 1965. The movie "Friday Night Lights" takes a look at the 1988 season of the Permian Panthers, the key...

Friday Night Lights - high school football - the good and bad
Review created: 05/16/05
by: CyndiA -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Great story. Plenty to think about when it comes to high school sports.

Cons:
Hollywood needs to lighten up and let stories play as they should.

One of the football players I teach told me to be sure to watch Friday Night Lights. He said it s one of his favorite movies of all time. Students don t often give me movie suggestions, and when they do, I m usually impressed. This time was no exception. I really enjoyed Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is based on a true story and a book by the same name. I hope to get a copy of the book, because I generally enjoy books more than movies. I ve also read that the movie changed up some of the details. I d like to know the most accurate version. The story is about the football team at...

MOVING STORY OF THE PRESSURE ON STUDENT ATHLETES
Review created: 10/11/04
by: mike.holmes -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Strong acting, strong characters and great cinematography

Cons:
Some unnecessary inaccuracies

Having grown up in Odessa, Texas and moving back there after law school, I have been closely associated with Permian High School's football team for over 40 years. I "played" junior varsity, sent two children through the school from 1987 to 1995 and have seen 100's of Mojo games. Ed Williamson and I both wrote reviews of the book upon which this movie is based. Ed and I both went to the movie on its first official day and Ed has already written an excellent review of the film. I'm a little surprised by the overall rating and small number of ratings on Epinions. Such comments as "boring" and ..

THE MOVIE: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS: We Were Present At The Creation, Part 2
Review created: 10/09/04
by: Ed.Williamson -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
I got to watch the Real Team on which the movie is based.

Cons:
Stories of the inner lives of the characters are not fully told, resulting in incompleteness.

Friday Night Lights (2004) Cast: Coach Gaines: Billy Bob Thornton Mike: Lucas Black Don: Garrett Hedlund Boobie: Derek Luke Brian: Jay Hernandez Ivory: Lee Jackson Chris: Lee Thompson Young Charles Billingsley: Tim McGraw L.V. Miles: Grover Coulson This movie seems like it has been a direct part of my life. And not just mine alone; many other souls probably have that feeling too, once they have seen it. A part of my life. That s what it feels like, watching Friday Night Lights, the movie, because I was there at Permian High, the school depicted in the movie as having one of the greatest high.
