  Whistling In The Dark

This is the album that got the critics attention and elevated these two amazing Johns to cult status. There are some essential classics here (Particle Man, Birdhouse In Your Soul) and I think it's safe to say that this is the single most important album in the huge TMBG discography. 5 Huge Stars.

I love the humor of They Might Be Giants and their classic songs that I grew up with. I wanted to buy it because I remember loving the music as a kid.

  They Might Be Giants: Flood
Review created: 05/09/07

This is easily one of my favourite They Might Be Giants album, if not my favourite album of all time. It is witty and strange, maybe too cool for the mainstream, so if you like your Gwen Stephanis and Pussy Cat Dolls, this might not be for you. I like it because you have to interpret a lot of things, it makes you think, and the lyrics are just strange enough to keep you hooked.

GREAT CD! Dont tell too many people. Keep em special!

Quirky, offbeat, intelligent, and humorous. I'm glag they didn't get too commercial like Bare Naked Ladies. Did you hear about TMBG doing songs for Spielberg's "Tiny Toons"? Great group, great original toons.

  Nothing's Cooler Than Being Uncool
Review created: 08/15/05
by: DrFaustus-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Music

Pros:
you'll never look at pop music the same way again

Cons:
will simply confuse and annoy those who know nothing beyond the popular trends

1989 to 1990 was an awkward year for me. But then again, freshman year of high school is an awkward time for most people. I knew right from the start that I wasn't going to be part of the popular crowd. More importantly, though, I knew that I didn't want to be part of the popular crowd. All the constant concern about not breaking the ever-changing rules of what's being cool, having to kowtow to the students who hogged the spotlight with their athletic prowess, maneuvering my way through the hierarchy of social coterie, letting the masses define what is and what is not important - in essence,..

How to rewire your brain part 1
Review created: 01/28/00

Pros:
Catchy album, Has most of their hits

Cons:
Too simplistic, Middle drags

Ah, to be ten again, young and simple, with not a care in the world beyond watching afterschool cartoons. I'm sure many people have similar memories. One sticks in my mind more than any other, though. Once, while watching "Tiny Toon Adventures," they made music videos of various songs. Big deal, I thought initially. That was before the classic song "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)" cued up. I had heard the song before, but the new version was more vibrant. I listened further, and the same band did another song, a new one: "Particle Man." My little brain, which was hopped up on sugar and various.

A "Flood" Of Eccentric Music As They Might Be Giants Broke Into The Mainstream!
Review created: 04/25/07
by: wlswarts -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Decent music, Good vocals, Wonderful weird lyrics

Cons:
SHORT, Some of the tracks are too quirky just for the sake of oddity.

They Might Be Giants is the quirky duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell and I've listened to their albums "Flood" and "Then: The Early Years" (reviewed at: http://www.epinions.com/content_13268782724 ) for quite some time now and it surprised me that I had not reviewed the former. When I recently encountered the They Might Be Giants album "No!" (reviewed at: http://www.epinions.com/content_352765906564 ) and was dismayed by how it delved into children's music, I decided it was time to explore where They Might Be Giants had been and relistening to "Flood." With 19 tracks clocking in at...

  Why are they rising...again
Review created: 03/18/01
by: amidknight -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Fun uptempo songs

Cons:
None

The year: around 1990 (of course). I was about 10 or 11 watching Tiny Toons, a wonderful show really, at a friends house. The episode on was a spoof of MTV (back when they played videos) and two of the songs they used were from this album; 'Istanbul (not Constantiniple)' and 'Particle Man'. I had heard these songs before and found myself singing away while my friend was looking at me like a crazy person. It was, however, not until four or five years later that I got 'Istanbul' stuck in my head one day (remembering living in Denver) in my head, this sent me into a ferocious hunt for anything I.

  A Great Album...Yah!
Review created: 04/04/00

Pros:
Every song has a hook that will have you singing it for days

Cons:
The Goofy lyrics and strange voices may turn more "serious" music fans off

Any TMBG (as we insiders call They Might Be Giants) fan gets the title of this review. For the rest of you, it's a take off of one of the clever little ditties that make up Flood, a rock album for people who don't like rock music...and everybody else too. I got into TMBG in a strange period in my life. I had given up on pop music (this was pre-Nirvana) and was listening to quirky stuff like Thomas Dolby, Peter Gabriel, and Information Society. In short, I had fallen under the spell of "geek rock". With their goofy lyrics about how the sun works and accordion solos, They Might Be Giants.
