This book should be a required reading in history class for upper class students. It tells of the guts and determination of our WWII soldiers that conquered Iwo Jima through the lifes of the six men who raised our American flag on this island. Many know of "The Photograph" of these six men raising the flag but this book tells the story behind the scene. It is very well written and brings the horrors of war down to the level of the "everyday" United States Citizen.
Great book, great story of one of the most improtant events in Marine Corps history. Never again will I look at a photo or the actual monument without thinking that I know about the men who are depicted, thier individual stories and how this photo changed thier lives.
Very good service. I would definitely purchase from seller again. Very pleased with the service. Have enjoyed reading the novel. Thank you very much the great service.
It is graphic, but truthful. I bought it out of interest in the war as well as being from Wisconsin and wanting to know as much as possible about the people involved. I appreciate the detail.
interesting storyof the U.S. Marines in the Pacific during world war 11 good author good story History not fiction plety of facts aout te peple raising the flag
I bought flags of our fathers , because i had read James Bradleys other book Fly Boys and had enjoyed it. both books are both riveting and truthful ! I loaned both to an uncle of mine ( a war vet) and he said they changed his outlook on his own war experience! they should be required reading in all american history classes!!!!!!
The book was recommend to me by a former co-worker. He was one of the men that was involved at Iwo Jima. It's an excellent book expecially for those interested in what happened during the War.
James Bradley's story of his Father John Bradley and the other men raising the flag on Iwo Jima is a sad, painful reminder to all Americans the sacrifices they and their families made during this time in our history. This was a generation of Americans who proudly marched into battle sacrificing life and limb for the freedoms we may at times take for granted. The story about flag-raiser Ira Hayes is one of particular poignancy for me. The graphic reality of war is ever-present and yet a loving tribute to these special Americans. I recommend reading the book prior to seeing the Clint Eastwood movie. The movie is a wonderful adaptation of the book and masterfully done.
i bought this book because of my interest in wwII and bradleys other book flyboys i was impressed with the amount of research the the author had to do to get this into ptrint any reader will feel that they are part of history as the pages flash by. dutch
Mt brother in-law was a decorated war hero from the 24th Infantry Division, that served in Iwo Jima and the Pacific during WW11. My son was very close to him, and reads everything he can about that war. I wanted to buy it for him. He was not in the least disappointed in this true story of war and heroism. He said it was really difficult to put down. For him it depicted the reality of the battles on an island that was full of tunnels, minefields, unbearable heat, miserable terrain, insects, and Japanese soldiers determined to fight, kill, or be killed in order to retain that island. The story of this war and its aftermath, was written by the son of Flag raising Marine John Bradley, and is a truly interesting book.
Every American should read this book. Excellent biography of the 6 men that raised the flag on Iwo Jima and describes the sacrafices made by American boys for our freedom, which most people are not aware of or appreciate. Looking forward to the upcoming movie.
