This is a great book for many of the older, traditional poems.(John Greenleaf Whittier, Eliz. Barret Browning, Longfellow and even the Bible) There are also some from Ogden Nash, but for the most it is a good collection of well-known and loved poems of the past. It is a large and thick book. A few colored illustrations would have added a little sparkle.
I bought this book to introduce my daughter, who is homeschooling at 3rd grade level, to poetry. I had already looked at a number of poetry books at my local library, and this seemed perfect, as it had works by a wide number of poets, with various themes that would appeal to a child. I also thought that complexity of the verses was ideal, as most had fairly simple rhyming patterns and the vocabulary was accessible without being babyish. The book has so far been a great success, we read a poem each day, and we have already learned two by heart. I would recommend this book if you are looking for an introduction to traditional poetry for older children (8 years plus).
