I bought it because it's how my great grandfather obtained his land in Oklahoma and it's a good visual history lesson for my kids. I hate the ending. It's hokey and condescending.

I own this on VHS, but decided to upgrade to DVD. I LOVE this movie! It's a little long, but well worth your time. Just grab a big bowl of popcorn and a fresh brewed glass of iced tea and enjoy some Mommy Time! :0)

Far and Away w/ Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman
Review created: 12/20/07
by:

I first saw this movie when it came to the theater years ago. Since then I have rented it and have also viewed it on TV. Finally, I decided I just had to have it, because it is one of those epic 3 hour movies that you can watch once a year, like Gone with the Wind or The Wizard of Oz. I have always loved the Irish accents, but aside from that it is just a good story line that never leaves you bored. It moves along at a very good pace, and Kidman and Cruise are at their best. Buy it. If you love a good love story you won't regret it.

  Better than it should be
Review created: 03/08/07

Historical fiction meets romance novel, but it comes together nicely. Nicole Kidman (back when she was still pretty) and Tom Cruise (not playing Tom Cruise, for once) both turn in solid performances as a fiery upper-class Irish girl and the earnest peasant who takes her under his wing. Extremely family-friendly; not a thing in it I'd hesitate to let a child see.

Ron "Opie" Howard's usual attention to detail is apparent throughout, and the mossy Irish countryside, gritty Boston slums, and sweeping western vistas are as much characters in the story as any of the actors. A good old-fashioned American epic that makes you care about the characters, and feel good in the end. No surprises, but two-and-a-half hours sweeps by.

Incidentally, it has one of the best insults ever caught on film: "...you ugly little fraction of a man!", hurled by Kidman (with just the right amount of haughty defiance) at Clint Howard (who always seems to find a part in big brother's films.)

  Tom at his Dreamiest
Review created: 05/25/00

Pros:
good old-fashioned love story, funny, Irish

Cons:
the big fight with the Italian is a little intense

Wow -- a school movie I actually enjoyed! I had the privilege of watching "Far and Away" in my eleventh grade history class. We were studying that time period, most especially immigration and the era of the Big Bosses. I had never heard of this movie, but when I realized it starred Tom Cruise and featured all Irish characters, I was more than willing to watch it with rapt attention. I already liked Tom Cruise, but Tom Cruise with an Irish accent is, as far as I'm concerned, about the epitomy of dreaminess. Oddly enough, I was not familiar with his wife, Nicole Kidman, who stars opposite him...

From Ireland To America, Land of the Free
Review created: 11/07/00
by: Leanansidhe -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
gives you a bit of history doesn't it

Cons:
somewhat cheesy ending!

America, the land of the free, the land of prosperity. America was the dream of every pauper, every men who s willing to work but cannot survive where they are. What we re looking at in this film is the poverty that Joseph Donnelly faced (played by Tom Cruise). At the start of the show, we see Joseph s father die twice, and he came back because he wanted to tell his son how Joseph had weird ideas in his head, very much like his old man. The setting at the beginning of the film, by the way, is in Ireland, the land of religion differences and alcohol. Joseph was keen on owning his own land and.

  A Wonderful Journey
Review created: 09/02/00
by: Sare -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Everything.

Cons:
Under appreciated.

This has to be one of my favorite movies. I caught it once on late-night TV years ago, and have never been able to get it out of my mind. I rented it the next day and continued to rent it sporadically for the next few years until I finally found a copy to purchase. This movie is witty, charming, and incredibly realistic. It stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as Joseph Donnelly, a poor tenant farmer who wants nothing more than his own plot of land and Shannon Christie, the daughter of the landlord who holds Joseph's land. It begins simply enough: Joseph's father is killed during a riot against.

  Cursed, I'm Cursed.
Review created: 08/13/00
by: Sierra_22 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Cruise, Kidman; romance; drama; history

Cons:
None.

Okay, so that line isn't really a description of the movie, but it's one of my favorite lines from this wonderful film. A historical romance starring husband/wife acting team Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Far and Away captured my heart from the moment these two star-crossed lovers met. Far and Away takes place in both America and Ireland in a time period where thousands of European immigrants traveled to the New World to claim the free Western land for themselves. This basic plot is complicated by the meeting of two very different Irish worlds. Tom Cruise is Joseph Donnelly, a poor Catholic...

  Irish Eyes are Smilin'
Review created: 03/17/00
by: WBDBaj -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
wonderful scenery, acting, and portrayal

Cons:
none

This movie was so well done! Can't you see the sweat shops, the boxing rings, and the Irish part of New York City? Nicole with her spoons to sell, and Cruise's wonderful accent? The setting of the Irish nobleman's home was absolutely as Ireland should be. Green, lush, and with a fairy tale quality. Cruise's accent is wonderful, and his fiery temper is perfect for this film. You can feel the run-away attitude in this film. Far and Away....two young people run from social and political upheaval in Ireland to make their way to the United States. They may know someone there, but finding them in...
