PROS
Large format, up to 13 inches wide and 44 inches long
Pigment based DURABRIGHT ink set
2 black carts
CONS
Does not accept cloth at all
I have managed to go through most of my first ink set that was included with my original purchase. While some people believe that the ink carts included with a new printer are usually not shipped FULL, I can not say that about this particular purchase.
I have printed well over 16 11x17 and 8 13x19 full color prints, not to mention a few 8x10's and a couple dozen 4x6's. The first ink cart to show warning was the yellow, next was the cyan.
So, I was happy with the amount, how about the quality?
Well, I was GREATLY impressed, and so are my customers. While I have only been selling prints for a little less then a year, I have become aware that even the most perfect image can be ruined with a poor job printing.
I would be comfortable putting these prints up against any prints I recieved from my local labs - plus I have complete control over the final print.
I do have to interject a couple of VERY IMPORTANT points here.
PAPER - There is a HUGE difference in paper available. I started with a KODAK brand of 13x19 glossy paper (mainly because it was available locally) and was really happy - except for some marking (within about 2 inches of starting and an inch of finishing the print)
I thought there was something wrong with the printer - but after getting some higher quality paper (Ilford) and the markings not coming up, I was relieved.
So, paper quality IS a MAJOR deal - the pigment inks really show how superior they are on better papers.
The second point I want to relate is in reference to Epson's customer support people. Even with emails and no phones, they were patient, quick to reply and easy to understand.
Overall - I am very pleased with this purchase. I went with the r1800 over the 2400 mainly due to price and the fact that it is technally advanced over the 2200 (better and more precise print head). There is about a 400.00 difference between the r1800 and the 2400, maybe it is worth it, maybe not. In a side by side comparison, I found no difference in color prints. In Black and White prints, I did notice there was some shading differences with the 2400 coming out in front (I am sure this is due to the 2400 having 3 black ink carts) but it was not a difference worth 400.00.
I believe I have purchased a great printer, worth far more then the retail price, and if my web-site continues to perform well, this printer MAY be the last one I buy.
