The best of early REM

This is basically the best of the early REM, mostly songs from the first 5 albums. If you are a big REM fan, you probably already have it. If not, don't worry about it.

It's the End of the World, but REM's Naming it Anyway

Pros:
Great REM from the earlier years

Cons:
It s way too short of a compilation album

Wow. I think that s my longest title, yet. First, a definition: eponymous, root word - eponym [ep @-nim] n. A personage assumed as the founder and name-giver of a race, state, or city; also the name of the personage. [source: New Illustrated Webster s Dictionary/Thesaurus, (c) 1992] Although, they aren t that egotistical - really. However, I ve always been given the impression that when REM aims - they aim for the biggest target. This is pretty big. With 12 tracks, coming from 7 different albums - this is a nice compilation of REM work pre- 88. (remember, kiddies - REM has been around over 20.

Pros:
12 solid songs, a good overview of R.E.M.'s past.

Cons:
Mostly redundant if you have the albums.

Before the days of IRS milking R.E.M. for a new compilation of (one or the other) hits and b-sides, there was Eponymous, a compilation assembled by the members of R.E.M. personally. Of course, the difficulty with any R.E.M. compilation is that they've never really made a weak album. So you're probably better off not paying for the overlap. But, as a product, how does Eponymous fare? Quite well, really. Songs from all their five albums are featured, giving you a good idea of the feel of each of them. In addition, a few tracks otherwise hard-to-find are on here, to make sure that fans of the...

 When Alternative Really Was Alternative
Review created: 08/09/01

Pros:
Collects the highlights of REM's early years
Cons:
A couple of the mixes were a little muffled

In their 20-year existence, REM has become one of the giants of the modern rock scene. This band formed back in 1981, when the genre was often synonymous with "new wave." With the distinctive, introspective, often angst-ridden vocals of lead singer Michael Stipe, the band would reach superstar status by the early 1990s. This disc begins with their earliest hit, "Radio Free Europe," which dovetailed with the new wave of the early 1980s. This song features charging guitars and the raw production that was a hallmark of the band's early days. A slicker version of this song would become a minor...

A Look at R.E.M., the Early Years.
Review created: 12/29/00

Pros:
Good compilation of IRS years from R.E.M.

Cons:
"Finest Worksong" remix isn't need and more classics R.E.M. is needed

After 1987's breakthrough effort "Document", R.E.M. were on their way to Warner Brothers for a new start. The years in the IRS label help gave R.E.M. five classic studio albums, an EP, and a rarities collection. The album titled "Eponymous" is a collection of the band's work on the IRS label and some earlier tracks. "Eponymous" features twelve songs from the band's pre-Warner Brothers era including some independent releases before the band was signed to the IRS label. The first track on the album is the original version of the classic jangle dance-pop tune "Radio Free Europe" where in...

Compilation of Great R.E.M. Hits from the 1980 s
Review created: 01/23/01
by: 4-1-1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
the best R.E.M. songs of the 1980 s
Cons:
only 43 minutes of music :-(

I am a fan of R.E.M. s early works, and this album -- a collection made up of singles issued during R.E.M. s early years -- plus some loose tracks that didn t get published on earlier releases. The songs are arranged in chronological order of their production, so the listener can enjoy a good review of R.E.M. s evolution as a group. This 1988 compilation profiles some of the best singles recorded between 1982 and 1987: - Radio Free Europe (the original hib-tone single, not the album version) - Talk About the Passion - So. Central Rain - (Don t Go Back To) Rockville - Can t Get There From Here.
