Dusk [Remaster] - The (The) (CD 2002)

Perfect when you feel absolutely miserable and alone

Pros:
Will pick you right out of a foul mood

Cons:
Will also put you right into one if you're not careful

Sometimes, you just need to wallow. Forget all of that happy, perky, "Come on everyone, get happy," drivel. You've just been dumped, you feel like the stuff that collects underneath the refrigerator, and you don't want anyone to tell you how to feel. You want to be miserable, but you also know that if you listen to The Smiths one more time, you're going to slit your wrists. Or write poetry. Maybe both. Enter Matt Johnson, the brains, heart, guts, and genitals behind The The. Here he has given you a gift: an album that will take you down to the very bottom of wallowing and self-righteous I've..

Pros:
Matt's voice!

Cons:
there are absolutely no cons. the end. believe it.

OK, here's the deal: if you want to get a woman in bed, buy this CD and play it as soon as possible. I admit, that might not be the best reason to purchase music, but as a woman, I can attest to the fact that this is the sexiest album I have ever heard in my life. Leonard Cohen is the only guy who has a voice that can compare, but he never released an album like this one. Even "Help Line Operator" makes the most conservative practitioner of celibacy want to go out and find someone to... well, anyway, it's pretty hip. Actually, the entire CD tells a story, and it's a story well worth hearing...

Are you lost, lustful, and lonely?
Review created: 06/10/00

Pros:
just about everything

Cons:
it eventually ends

theThe is one of the least appreciated (or known of) bands in the world. I bought the album "Dusk" quickly after it was released back in 1993. The album was advertised with a sticker saying something to the effect of "Music for the lost, lustful, and lonely". I was not sure exactly what that was supposed to mean until I popped the tape into my cassette deck for the first time. The opening track, "True Happiness This Way Lies" is utterly amazing and sets the tone for this wonderful album. It consists of just the lead singer, Matt Johnson, and his accoustic guitar. His voice is truly amazing....
