13:28... Birmingham, England... Detective Joe Friday checking in...

Pros:
Cast, script

Cons:
Just not quite what it could have been

Dragnet is an affectionate pastiche of the 1950 s detective series. Unlike the original, however, this is very much tongue-in-cheek and the end result is a fine (albeit not perfect) detective comedy that s well worth watching. Detective Joe Friday (brilliantly played by Dan Akroyd [Blues Brothers, Spys Like Us]) the nephew of the Joe Friday from the original series but so much like his uncle that you d be hard pushed to tell them apart (well, apart from the uncle being dead by now, presumably) gets in to work one morning to find his long-time partner has quit. As is always the way, the...

  Joe Friday Redux (T & A WO)
Review created: 10/01/05

Pros:
Aykroyd, Hanks, Morgan, other supporting cast, many humorous moments

Cons:
The story doesn't always make sense

What would have happened if Joe Friday found himself partnered with someone who weren't as strait-laced as he? Dan Aykroyd answered that question in his 1987 tribute to Jack Webb's classic, "Dragnet." In Aykroyd's "Dragnet," the comedian stars as Joe Friday, the nephew of the man played by Webb. His partner, Frank Smith, has quit the force to buy a goat farm. His uncle's old partner, Captain Bill Gannon (Harry Morgan), assigns the younger Friday a former undercover officer, Pep Streebeck (Tom Hanks), to work with Joe in Robbery Homicide. They begin by investigating a series of thefts. The...

"Do you have any idea what falls into an industrial sausage press?"

Pros:
Hanks and Aykroyd are priceless as the principal characters. Christopher_Plummer makes a good bad guy.

Cons:
The story is outrageous. The secondary characters are weak at best.

The nostalgia surrounding old television programs that invariably leads to their being turned into feature films didn't start in just the last few years. Boob tube classics have turned up on the silver screen for years. One looks back to the year 1987 for the film adaptation of the classic cop show "Dragnet." Directed by Tom Mankiewicz, who has enjoyed more fame as a writer by penning several of the Sean Connery-era James Bond films as well as collaborating on the first "Superman" script, "Dragnet" stars Dan Aykroyd ("The Blues Brothers") as Joe Friday the nephew of Jack Webb's character from.
