I have been impressed by Alan Jackson's song writing skills since 9/11. Before that I would not pay much attention to anything he did except the finished product. This older production is made up of 10 songs, 9 of which Mr Jackson co-authored.
While 5 of the recordings made gold, I most appreciated DON'T ROCK THE JUKEBOX, MIDNIGHT IN MONTGOMERY, SOMEDAY,and FROM A DISTANCE--. George Jones is mentioned in two of the selections... DON'T ROCK THE JUKEBOX and JUST PLAYIN' POSSUM. George comes in on the end of the latter so you feel that there is a mutual admiration going on there.
The liner notes contain a lot of information and the lyrics for all the songs. I wish this were more common.
Since this is a 1991 album it gives a look at the early career influences and perhaps struggles of a developing artist. I like Jackson's style and I could not help but feel that he believes as he writes. I intend to fill in the gaps in my collection so I will be looking for more early albums.
What didn't I like about this album? Not much. The vocals are not as smooth as his recent ones but then who comes out full blown star immediately.
