Great movie! At the end, you're really feeling sorry for the bad guys. I had searched online for the 20 best gangster movies, and found this one in the list, and it definately belonged among the top 20.

  Donnie Brasco, Good News
Review created: 12/07/07

I think this movie was just well layed out throughout the entire movie. Johnny Depp and Al Pacino work together so well to lay out the plot with phenomonal acting. I absolutely love this movie, and think it is well worth watching. It would be very hard to watch this movie and not like it. I would definately rate this movie a 10/10. Its an older movie, but its in color, there is action, great acting, worth to see.

This was a great movie, especially with the pairing of Johnny Depp and Al Pacino. I had never watched it until I got this DVD, but I thought it was a very good movie.

  Depp & Pachino !!
Review created: 01/08/07
by:

If you like Goodfellas then you will love this movie. Depp is an undercover FBI agent who after years of undercover work starts to think and act like part of the mafia. He thinks of Pachino as a father figure and really likes the guy. The movie is about the mafia and bosses who try to expand their "business" to Miami. Depp loses touch with his real family and they start to hate him. I don't want to give away too much. Buy it!

The acting is superb. Al Pacino and Johnny Depp each give one of their greatest performances. Depp had the character down pat, even to the way he walked. This film was overshadowed by Wiseguys which was released around the same time. This film is just as good if not better than Wiseguys. I bought it to add to my Johnny Depp collection.

Johnny Depp delivering another great performance
Review created: 09/02/06

This movie is awesome if you are into true life story movies, Depp portrays an FBI agent who infiltrated the Mob in attempt to bring their hard core criminal members to justice, what makes this movie so interesting is that its based on true life events, not to mention that Al Pacino, who is without a doubt one of the greatest hollywood actors of all time has also a major role in the movie as a mob member.

Donnie Brasco is equivelent to mob movies as in the same manner as Carlito's Way. I would strongly recommend buying this movie if you like Godfather, Scarface, and other mob movies.

  It's a Fugazy: Donnie Brasco
Review created: 12/26/04
by: George_Chabot-- a member of Epinions and Advisor in Movies

Pros:
Pacino, Depp, Screenplay, Direction, Cinematography

Cons:
Not more introspective mob movies like this

"A wise guy's always right. Even when he's wrong, he's right." Lefty Ruggiero Donnie Brasco is the story of an FBI agent who penetrated the inner circle of the famed New York Italian underworld. The real agent was named Joseph Pistone and he wrote the book this story is based upon. His underworld name was Donnie Brasco, hence the title of the film. Brasco (Johnny Depp) became known by hanging around the fringes of the mob and making it known he was in the jewelry business. "Don da Jeweler" gets approached privately by a real mafioso, Lefty Ruggiero (Al Pacino) who wanted to sell a hot diamond.

"I'm a spoke on a wheel. I am, and so are you."

Pros:
Two high-caliber performances, a remarkable script and gritty sense of realism.

Cons:
Anne Heche's whining; some mildly clich d moments.

It was a match made in heaven. Like black and white in a cookie (yes, that s Seinfeld reference, if anyone is keeping count). Abbot and Costello. Laurel and Hardy. James Bond and his flavor-of-the-week girl. I could sit here naming names all day, but I ll just get to the point: Al Pacino and Johnny Depp. Both considered to be in the upper echelons of their respective generations and both of them fine actors. And both of them, in the same movie. (Well, this paragraph sure sounds like an ad, doesn t it?) Joseph Pistone (Johnny Depp) is a New York City cop who gets assigned to a ver special case.

Perhaps The Best Mob Story Ever Told
Review created: 10/10/05
by: bilavideo-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
As a film about two men, each working in opposite directions, this one is unparalleled.

Cons:
Familiar story of the infiltrator, mixed with Death of a Salesman storyline.

It pays to have a sense of where you are, in the development of a genre. Like anything else, a genre has a life cycle which it goes through before it ends up moribund, drops off the face of the earth, and comes back again - to entertain a whole new generation. Donnie Brasco is a film that understands this point. It knows where it is in the genre of the gangster flick. For my father's generation, The Godfather (1971) was that genre's shining star. But even it was a reinvention, pulled off at a time when the genre was thought to be long-since dead. Coppola's genius was to use that story, taken..

Depp and Pacino Conduct Mafia Clinic
Review created: 11/10/00
by: janesbit1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Outstanding lead acting, excellent ensemble cast, Intelligent script that develops characters well and provides new insights into the Mafia

Cons:
One lame and overused joke, overuse of the "predator" motif

Donnie Brasco may not have the epic qualities of Coppola s Godfather series, nor the dynamic construction of Scorcese s Goodfellas, but this under rated Mafia film ranks at the top when it comes to emotional intensity, character development, and revealing the inside nature of the Mob. Much of the film s authenticity comes from the fact that it s based on the true story of FBI undercover agent Joe Pistone, who infiltrated the New York Mafia, nearly becoming a made guy. Pistone served as a technical director to the film and remains friends with Johnny Depp, who brilliantly portrays him in one..

You don't need Scorsese or Copolla to make a good gangster movie
Review created: 03/06/08
by: Chad9976 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Outstanding performances; detailed screenplay; suspenseful

Cons:
Very vulgar and violent (the Japanese restaurant scene is disturbing and gratuitous); unravels at end

When it comes to modern gangster movies, it's really difficult to describe and review them without making comparisons to other films of the genre. I've always subscribed to the philosophy that any idea (no matter how many times it's been used before) can provide for a good story and "Donnie Brasco" clinches this idea. It has a good layer of authenticity, even if its core is a tad stale. The film starts off in typical fashion by defining its atmosphere of New York City in the late 1970s and the mobsters who inhabit it. We meet Lefty (Al Pacino), an aging wiseguy who can still walk the walk and.
