It is a movie that makes you laugh because it has the wierdist things that they do to interpret the biblical text and christian beliefs. It is light hearted fun and is a good movie if you are looking for a movie to watch when your bored. And in summary, buy it, rent it, whatever, just watch it.

  Lest We Forget
Review created: 04/09/08

If you have not watched this movie in a while you may have forgotten how funny and irreverent it truly is.It made me laugh...think...and even squirm a time or two. With actors like Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Matt Damon and Ben Afflack plus many other fine performances how can you go wrong. If you don't have the courage to laugh and your beliefs now and again this might not be your type of film...if on the other hand you have true belief in your own values and are not afraid to delve in to the world of the absurd it is time to see this again. The special edition as all sorts of wonderful extras as well.

  Funny satire of religious dogma

One of Kevin Smith's better movies, and a real treat for viewers familiar with the religious themes of the film. The cast is perfect, and the cameos are good.

This is a catechism of modern western religion insanity.
Oh, and it's funny as h-ll.
Great cast, great writing ("Clerks" will always suck, to me).

  Dogma - special edition
Review created: 09/06/07
by:

Funny movie. I went to the local movie store and wanted to buy the standard edition movie. The only one they had was the special edition. I didnt want to spend more that 15 bucks and that movie was almost double that. I checked on ebay and saw the special edition in my price range. I am glad I got the special edition instead of the standard movie because of all the extras. Literally, there are hours and hours of extras that you dont get on the standard edition. Some movies are good to see once through. Others, you gotta see at least a couple of times. This is one that is good to watch over and over and then explore all the reasons why they did what they did. Briliant writing for the movie, great story, and good actors. Its not my favorite movie, but its a movie I am glad to add to our collection.

Irreverent and Fun, another View Askew goodie
Review created: 05/04/07
by:

If you love Malrats, Chasing Amy, and Clerks, you won't be dissapointed. With an ansembled cast of regulars i.e. silent Bob and Jay, this irreverent look at faith will have you scratching your head and laughing both at the same time.
Kevin Smith hits another home run with this DVD.
This should be part of any good DVD collection.

  Great Movie
Review created: 05/03/07
by:

The movie is one of the best Kevin Smith made, and it is by far, the funniest.
If you are looking for sacrilegious, blasphemous non-religious movie (which are some of the titles the movie got), you might be disappointed. The movie does not contradict religion; it simply uses a non-conformist point of view.
On top of that, you get hours of extra stuff.
If you like Kevin Smith, you do not need me to recommend this movie for you. If you do not know him, this is a good way to start.

  Kevin Smith does Religion
Review created: 04/03/07

Watch Dogma, it may seem crass and full of "poop" jokes but there is a true message behind the maddness. Some "golden nuggets" if you may, of wisdom to be sucked out of the film.

This is a fabulous movie with a great cast and a really well-written script. Even though there is a lot of immature humor, there is also a deeper meaning that everyone should pay attention to.

DOGMA--Your Own Spiritual Fun in a Box
Review created: 02/09/07

I caught part of this film when I was flipping through channels one day, and it intrigued me. After I tracked down the name in the TV Guide, I started looking for a copy to buy. Local stores don't carry it, which is a shame, so I turned to Ebay, which is the way to go.

"Dogma" boasts a star-studded cast, including Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, etc. Rather than give details about the plot, I will say that this movie adds humor to religion and spirituality. It's filled with sexless angels, God on vacation, strip-teasing "Muse," fallen angels on a conquest, genocide, crabby priests, everything a comic religious flick needs.

I highly recommend this film for anyone not offended by spiritual humor. If you believe that everything "religious" is set in stone, then it's not for you. I am a Christian, and I have a sense of humor. I love God for his own sense of humor, and I'm certain that "Dogma" made Him laugh out loud.

  Great Buy!
Review created: 01/09/07

I love this movie. It is very funny and a great way to spend a rainy day. Dogma is a great story line and an interesting concept. Matt and Ben play two determined fallen angles, bound for heaven. Their battle against Jay and Silent Bob proves to be their downfall and saves heaven from the entrance of th banished angels. I decided to buy this movie because it has long been one of my favorites and I wanted to add it to my growing collection.

This movie poked clean, good natured fun at many stereo-types and beliefs. I loved every minute. Watch this movie with an open(unbias)mind as many times as it takes to understand all aspects. This is an Adult comedy.

Imaginative theology and a bigger-than-usual budget make Kevin Smith's (CHASING AMY, CLERKS) fourth film a kind of post-Catholic fantasy that only a comic-book enthusiast of his caliber could dream up. It concerns banished angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) who, after a few millennia in Wisconsin, discover a loophole in Catholic doctrine that would allow them back into heaven--but prove the fallibility of God and destroy the universe. As they make their way to New Jersey to receive a plenary indulgence, God dispatches a seraphim (Alan Rickman) to recruit lapsed-Catholic Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to stop the angels. She finds help in muses, prophets (Jay and Silent Bob), and the forgotten 13th apostle, Rufus (Chris Rock). Before long, all hell breaks loose (literally), and God (Alanis Morrisette) has to put in an appearance of her own. Smith's controversial (and very funny) film is powered by his trademark dialogue, ripe with observations on pop culture, religion, and bodily functions.

  The Lighter Side to Religion
Review created: 10/12/01
by: JustCathy -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Has some funny moments and a great cast.

Cons:
Moments are about it, the movie drags a bit.

Your imagination is really needed here. But imagine if you will that God sends down the angel Metatron(Alan Rickman) to convince a divorced, non-practicing Catholic woman, Bethany, (played by Linda Fiorentino)that she must stop two fallen angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from attending a church centennial in New Jersey. If these two fallen angels (who were banished to Wisconsin centuries ago), manage to walk through the arch of the church on its centennial, they will both return to heaven, upsurp God's Almighty Power and thereby negate the entire universe (in effect...

DOGMA: gawdawfully rotten heresytainment, but fairly funny in places
Review created: 04/16/02
by: Ed.Williamson -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Interesting mind-bending.

Cons:
Brainless at times.

Kevin Smith's 1999 film Dogma starts out before the credits roll with several disclaimers saying "We're sorry if the movie you are about to see is offensive, but we were just out to make a piece of funny fantasy, blah-blah-blah...." That in itself is enough to serve you notice that whoever put this movie together knew that somebody was going to be Almightily offended. In that, they succeeded. A few years ago I read a book on writing jokes and humor, and the book said that when you were being funny, you could laugh at certain things but certain things were no-nos. Among the things you weren't..

by: lemon_lime -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Strong cast and script. Requires actual thought at some points.

Cons:
too long for its own good. the whole poop monster thing.

With Kevin Smith, you either love him or hate him. There really is no middle ground. Which is why I've always been a little outcast in the area; I think he's great at times and definitely has his moments, but I'm not a die-hard fan. For anyone reviewing Dogma (and it is quite an honor to be the 465th person to do so, this should bring in some big bucks!) it should be required that they list how they stand on the subject of Kevin Smith films. This way, you'll know where the reviewer is coming from, and if you are likely (or not) to agree with his/her opinion of the film. So, then, I loved...

  It's Hell Getting Into Heaven!
Review created: 04/26/02
by: jankp -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
talented cast enjoy themselves in a daring and fun movie; good, provoking message

Cons:
some theological dialogue goes on too long; a couple of questionable scenes

My review title was one of the movie Dogma s taglines back in 1999 and an apt one that promises comedy, soul searching and some theological commentary. Kevin Smith, a practicing Catholic schooled by nuns, writes, co-directs, co-produces and co-stars as Silent Bob in a movie some radical, humorless Catholics have deemed offensive. Most people do not, although may find the running sarcasm of some Catholic beliefs to be tasteless. In the beginning, not that Beginning, silly, but in this movie, we see a homeless man bushwhacked beside a beach by grim-faced hockey players. Suddenly we re...

  Kevin Smith's Parable About Religion.
Review created: 04/05/03
by: jeff_wilder78 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Hilarious religious satire.

Cons:
Occasionally goes overboard, some fart humor.

Merriem Webster defines a Parable as: a usually short fictitious story that illustrates a moral attitude or a religious principle. That is definitely the best way of summing up Dogma that I have seen. Dogma manages to be rather smart about its subject matter, yet still sneak in some gross-out humor from time to time. In essence, the humor in Dogma draws equally from both Mark Twain and Monty Python with a teeny bit of SNL type humor thrown in for good measure. There is a scene early on in the movie where Chris Rock as Rufus, the 13th Apostle (and the only African-American one in the bunch, so.
