I loved the original, and this is more than just a rehashing. Many more elements of the story are included, helping a very complex story to make sense. It's very long, yet the length is necessary to due justice to the epic storyline. The agony of a Russia in revolution is brought to a fine point in this retelling. A beautiful movie about a man caught between wonderful women during a horrifying time.

Doctor Zhivago: finally, Pasternak's masterwork gets worthy treatment

Pros:
Gorgeous adaptation, staying true to both the novel and setting.

Cons:
May be a bit too long for most, but it's certainly worth watching.

Forget Julie Christie. Forget a dewy-eyed innocent in soft focus who is the perfect victim. Forget a young Omar Sharif before he got obsessed with playing bridge. Forget a rushed account of the Russian empire on the edge of World War One and the Revolution that followed. The BBC has managed to give us another classic novel into an understandable piece of film elegance and adaptation. There's a good reason why American audiences remain so taken with Masterpiece Theatre over the last thirty years. They keep putting out excellent films that are taken from both classic and contemporary novels....

  Ready For An Upbeat Revolution

Pros:
Decent Soundtrack, Acting, Cinematography

Cons:
Characters, Unrelenting Depressing Story, Pacing

On "Babylon 5," Susan Ivonova repeatedly reports that her bleak outlook on life and the universe is because she is Russian. It becomes a somewhat tired joke even in the first season. Having sat through the Russian epic, "Dr. Zhivago," I now see that she has something of a talent for understatement. Somewhere along the way, I must have stopped liking becoming mired in seas of disappointment and despair; "Magnolia" remains one of my favorite films and "Brazil" is my all time favorite, but "Dr. Zhivago" lacked something that allowed me to accept the other two. Vision? Imagination? Creativity?...
