I have a collection of over a thousand cds and this is one of my alltime favorites. And also as a musician, I would kill for the Suicide Machines signature sound. Hard sing-a-long punk mixed with jump-up energetic ska, backing up lung blowing vocals. A must have for any punk.

A must have for a punk CD collection

This was the first CD that I bought from the Suicide Machines and quickly became my favorite CD of all time. It's fast, upbeat and fun...everything punk should be. I have had this CD since high school and I still listen to it so it can put me in a "feel good" mood. I highly recommend seeing these guys live if you can, they are energetic and put on a great show!

"You're Better Off Doing Your Own Thing, Being Yourself and Being Strong"
Review created: 02/08/02

Pros:
fast, fun, and catchy

Cons:
every album since has been a disappointment

Well, it seems I'm getting old you see, and I can't avoid responsibility, stuck in a box of popular belief, and it feel's like something's wrong with me. I'll never forget when I first heard The Suicide Machines. My friend John was looking for a new punk album, something with energy and something that was a bit different as well. He had remembered hearing about the Suicide Machines and ended up buying this disc, Destruction By Definition. We put it on in my car, and quite frankly, I think I liked it even more than he did. Within a week, I had bought my own copy. The Suicide Machines are a...

  Hornless Ska Done Right
Review created: 02/26/06
by: musicc -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
catchy, fun fast

Cons:
the songs don't differ musically

The suicide machines were another ska band looking to break big in when ska was mainstreaming in the mid to late nineties, and they did after releasing destruction by definition on May 21 1996. The Suicide machines are a ska punk band that doesn t have any horns but they still play some really strong ska. Their music seems to start punk and transition into ska, it is an interesting mix but it works pretty well. I remember listening to the suicide machines a while back and wondering who they were because it was so catchy, then I saw it was the suicide machines and I got their debut album....

  the Suicide Machines

Pros:
rockin' punk and ska

Cons:
a little dated, I question the band's integrity (see s/t album)

After largely ignoring this album since the release of Battle Hymns, I just gave it another listen the other day. The album is still of the same quality as its follow-up, it's just a little more ska, as things were in the day it was released. The Suicide Machines play a blend of Operation Ivy style ska-punk, blended upbeat, fast tempo ska with pop-punk and some hardcore elements. This album kicks off with two songs that now sound a little bit dated to me. "New Girl," though a good song, is just a little to boppy for me, and "S.O.S.," the band's calling card for tolerance is just a little to...

  ska without horns that's awesome
Review created: 01/21/01
by: LessThanNick1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
high energy, there are no bad songs, the first 6 songs are awesome

Cons:
lyrics weren't super awesome, album isn't as good towards the end

I ve heard all three albums by the Suicide Machines and Destruction by Definition is by far their best work. Isn t it weird how band s first albums are usually their best? It s probably because they have more time to work on their debut than their other albums. Tony Hawk Made Me Buy This (not really) Well, Tony Hawk the skateboarder didn t actually force my to buy this CD, his Playstation game got me into the Suicide Machines. I heard their song New Girl hundreds of times because I would play Tony Hawk s Pro Skater endlessly and their was only a 10 song rotation, so every ten runs I d hear...

  The Definition of Destruction
Review created: 12/11/01

Pros:
A fast-paced blend of bouncy ska and skatepunk.

Cons:
None comes to mind...

Just like LessThanNick's review, I hadn't heard Suicide Machines until their song "New Girl" appeared in Tony Hawk's Playstation game. Even then, I thought they were Rancid (but a quick reference to the credits proved me wrong). Although New Girl did, as they say, rock, I didn't pay them much attention. Then I saw them at Warped Tour in '00. Even THEN, I didn't pay much attention. And then, a month later, I saw them while they were touring with Less Than Jake (*in Simpsons comic book store guy voice*, "best ska show EVER."). Then it sorta clicked with me... "hey... these guys ROCK." It then...
