Dead Heat by Joel C. Rosenberg (2008)

#5 of a 5-volume series of Fiction-based-upon-Bible-Prophecy. Series starts with Last JiHad and MIRRORS CURRENT EVENTS like no other books out there, including LEFT BEHIND by LaHaye and Jenkins which is a fabulous series, but Rosehberg takes it to the Top Knotch of suspense. Rosenberg's ability to For-Tell CURRENT EVENTS is uncanny and for us fundamental Christian believers (Rosenberg is a Messianic Jew / Completed Jew) it would be terrifiying, indeed, if we didn't already know The Messiah Is About to Return - the "second coming" of Jesus Christ for his Church / Believers, known as the "rapture", a catching away. The final events of this period of time we are living in will be extremely unpleasant for anyone 'left behind' who has delayed taking a stand on Christ as their own personal Redeemer and Lord. There is no 'fence sitting' on this issue -- you either have made Peace with Christ for your own soul or you have not. We each will be 'somewhere' after we die / leave this earth, and the Judgement Seat of God question will be "What did you do with MY SON, Jesus Christ?" -- procrastination on making a choice IS A CHOICE -- A CHOICE to Reject Christ, so I urge you to make a stand. No amount of Pride is worth going to Hell for. -- Rosenberg delineates what could/ likely will happen in the End of Days as the Anti-Christ tries to make "peace" for Jerusalem and the Nation of Israel, except it is a phony peace, with aspects to it that are mind numbing. The bottom line is that, there is NOTHING, NOTHING On Earth - not your career, financial portfolio, house, comfy lifestyle, even your family which should be holding you back from accepting the Forgiveness and Grace (unmerited favor) of Christ before the judgement seat of Christ. We think, today, that the price of gasoline is outrageous at $4+ a gallon -- that is NOTHING compared to the stress and Loss we could likely face if we are attacked again by terrorists, especially those with Nukes. Life would Never, Never, Never be what you want it to be. No political candidate would be powerful enough to pull the United States out of that scenario. For years we have been eliminating God from our daily lives: Not in our schools, no prayers, no Bibles, not in the courtrooms -- we have taken a societal stand to ELIMINATE God from our daily acknowledgements. He has, on the response, been gentleman enough to do as we have asked -- to Leave Us Alone -- LITERALLY -- and we no long have his full Protection that we once had -- and the scary part is, WE HAVE MADE THE CHOICE as a SOCIETY in the USA and world. -- As long as you are still breathing and conscious, YOU still have the opportunity to Make a Decision and Stand for Jesus Christ. Please do it before it is too late. That's what Author Joel Rosenberg is stressing in this series of books. God Bless you. GH

I like joel Rosenberg's ability to write in a prophetic manner. His books keep you reading. The chapters are short, but reading on was a must for me. Joel Rosenberg is truly a must read his books writer.

The story is a page turner for the most part and downright scary about its possibilities but the Jesus spin is a little too soapy at times (and I am a devout Christian.) I like the plausible action parts better than the agony over the death of a loved one.

Very enjoyable and "thought" provoking.
Writing could have been a "tad" sharper, but
story was great.

  LIP BITTING PAGE TURNER
Review created: 06/05/08
by:

I LOVED this book. When I said it was a lip bitting page turner, I did not exaggerate. I (for the most part) DO NOT like political books. Although this is a fictional political book, I did love it. It reminded me of the show "24" with it's hour by hour story line. Like the "Left Behind" series, this author, has got it. I have since bought ALL his books included in this series, and WILL reread it again.

A MUST READ! Provocative and Timely!

I Actually saw Joel Rosenberg on "The Glenn Beck Show". Although I have not read any of the prior four books of the series, they made a compelling case for reading this conclusion.
If ever there was a book for its time, this is it. No matter what your political or religious views may be you will not be dissapointed. Buy this book and pass it along to everyone you know. Wow!

The best in the series is saved for the end!

This is so on target with current events and those likely to come, I fear. Joel's books are always a disaster for my "Things to do List" as I can never lay them down once started!

  Dead Heat - Rosenberg
Review created: 05/10/08

Recommended by my Sister, a Christian. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Kind of like a Tom Clancy, but much better writing and put together in a plot that was truly gripping. I read it in two days...my husband in three. Now, we are buying the other books to the series. A must-read for any Christian and a must-read for non-Christians as well.

I became a fan of Joel Rosenberg back in 2002 when I read "The Last Jihad", the first book in this series. I was totally hooked!! All of the books in this series are great and "Dead Heat" did not disappoint. Excellent read.

Typical Rosenberg Book, Great Concept but Bad Writing
Review created: 04/23/08

I bought this book because I wanted to know what the future holds, since Rosenberg seems always to predict it. And he didn't disappoint with respect to plausible scenarios, which was really I guess what I wanted to know.

However, as he admits himself, he is not a good writer. It's somewhat painful to work through his pat, stereotypical, bad dialog and pages of irrelevant love memoirs that really add nothing to the story.

As with his other books, it follows the pattern of engaging the reader immediately, then drawing out the story with nothing happening for the bulk of the book leaving the reader suffering considerable anxiety about the details he either forgot to get back to or is waiting until the last page to cover. Finally, according to his pattern, there is a giant crecendo in the last 2 pages of the book and then the reader finds himself staring at the back cover saying, "Wow, I read that whole book for that 2-page ending?"

In short, Rosenberg spends inordinate amounts of time on needless (mostly introspective) details, but leaves out vast amounts of critical description as to the story at hand. Here is a micro-charicature of one of his books:

"The Ebola virus burst out of the warhead and sickened everyone in Nashville, leaving them slowly dying. Jon wondered about his wife. He remembered when they used to hold hands. Did she still love him? Was he the man he thought he was? And what about Nashville? 'It's a crying shame, but we have to get on with our lives, Major,' Jon said. Even so, memories of his mother haunted him as he thought about his upbringing. And what about the doctor? Did he know how much Jon loved Erin? And did Erin know whether or not the doctor knew how much he loved Erin? Jon could hardly bear the weight of the thought. Suddenly, he looked up and saw the meteor that would devastate the earth. And it did."

That said, I think the main idea of this book is not only plausible but probable, and will probably happen just like the things in his other books did. I just wish he would have provided more details of the aftermath and less trips down the love canal.
