Pros:
Interesting movie. Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, and Billy Zane

Cons:
Predictable at times

I m working more now, so I haven t had as much time to watch movies, though I do still manage to catch some on television. Sometimes I end up staying up way too late to watch something. I had finished up for the week and had two days off, so I was able to stay up to watch all of Dead Calm when I found it just coming on. I first saw the movie several years ago when I rented it, and I have seen it another time or two when it was on television. Dead Calm wasn t the best thriller I ve ever seen, but it was good and I think it was worth watching. PLOT Rae and John Ingram had been married for...

DEAD CALM: A Tale of Two Ships -- A Thriller? By Rights, a Love Story.
Review created: 03/20/07

Pros:
Phillip Noyce's direction. Nicole Kidman, Billy Zane, Sam Neil. South Pacific. Script. Cinematography. Sound. Editing.

Cons:
To conventional Horror fans, apparent lapses in logic. The ending (though a cheaply effective one).

"The side of the ship made an opaque belt of shadow on the darkling glassy shimmer of the sea. But I saw at once something elongated and pale floating very close to the ladder. Before I could form a guess a faint flash of phosphorescent light, which seemed to issue suddenly from the naked body of a man, flickered in the sleeping water with the elusive, silent play of summer lightning in a night sky." -- Joseph Conrad's "The Secret Sharer," (1911). ----- In 1967, three years after prolific ex-merchant mariner hard boiled fiction writer, Texas-born, Charles Williams (The Hot Spot) published...

Digging Deep within Oneself for That Dead Calm
Review created: 08/08/05
by: metalluk -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Intense psychological challenges; realistic psychological underpinnings; great performances; Kidman's debut; good cinematography and sound

Cons:
Some predictable plot developments

Dead Calm (1989) is a classic psychological thriller. It was also the film that introduced Nicole Kidman to the world at large. Kidman is my favorite actress among those currently in their prime. There are some actresses from other eras that I would choose over her, but none currently. That aside, it is clear to me, after reading 15-20 reviews of this film, that I value this film more than do most other reviewers. I've been trying to understand why that is and have reached the conclusion that I'm responding mainly to the psychological aspect of this film, whereas most other viewers appear to..

While it's certainly predictable, it still manages to pack a considerable punch.

Pros:
Solid performances. Taut editing and direction. Gorgeous cinematography. Nicole Kidman nudity.

Cons:
Plot is too obvious from the outset. Finale was a bit too over-the-top.

The 1989 film Dead Calm exists now as sort of a forgotten footnote in the careers of Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. Sam Neil had already established himself to a certain extent by this movie but the other 2 stars were still relative unknowns at the time. Dead Calm is a psychological thriller that boasts a simplistic plot that is extremely obvious from the outset. Rae (Nicole Kidman) and John (Sam Neill) Ingram are a married couple who are recovering from a devastating car wreck that killed their only son and shook both of them up considerably, especially Rae. They decide to take a vacation on..

  I can't wait to see Nicole's bare

Pros:
Kidman & Neill use their native Aussie accents! Plus Nicole's....

Cons:
more far fetched than a muppet movie.

well, everything ! I mean, I WON'T wait to see it. I couldn't bare (pun intended) to sit through the film again just for a glimpse of Nicole Kidman in the buff. And if I'm not going to sit through it to see her, there is no other reason to see this film, so I guess it goes in the trash pile. This story, originally a novel Charles Williams, was good enough to get the attention of Orson Wells who filmed it but never completed it. His version has never been shown. It involves a couple who are on a long sailing trip, presumably they have chosen this trip as a method of getting over the tragic...
