The Best of it's kind. Not to be missed. Laugh out loud funny. The gore is over the top and the special effects are superb. Get this movie!

  Classic style zombie cheese
Review created: 06/27/08
by:

To be fair, this film was designed to please the B rated horror fans. Plain and simple it does just that and little else. The movie has some great zombie moments such as the famous lawn mower scene but the story is lacking and the film is not memorable. I would recommend Evil Dead 2 over this film, but if you are hungry for some far fetched zombie action and want to see a person being attacked by a zomies guts then this is the flick for you.

The movie gets an average rating since it is extremely creative with the death scenes and zombies, however the poor film quality, bad acting, and lack of any real plot bring it down from being more.

A Boy, His Mother, And A Rat Monkey (?)
Review created: 05/25/08
by:

First of all, let me state that this film was probably the last hurrah for the gore-filled late 80's films & whatta way to go! Released in 1992, Dead Alive is one of the most goriest films ever to come out of New Zealand (or anywhere else really!). Taking place in 1957, a rare and dangerous animal, offically known as Simian Raticus (the Rat Monkey Sumatra) is taken from it's home at Skull Island and brought to a local zoo. What the visitors don't know is that this monkey has an infectious bite, one that turns anyone into a bloodthirsty zombie! When Lionel, a young man with a smothering Mother who watches his every move, takes his newly found girlfriend Paquita to that zoo, he gets more than he ever bargained for! You see, while he & Paquita enjoys the zoo, Mother is spying on them, only to accidentally get bitten by that monkey (Uh, oh!). After Mother gives the animal the boot (watch & see), Lionel takes her home to get well, but as we all know in these movies, that ain't going to happen! Soon Mother gets ill.......really ill! And the zombie-ness begins! When Zombie-Mom gets loose, she takes a nurse with her, and it ain't to the hospital either! After mom's "funeral", she meets a few more of the town locals, including Father McGruder, who apparently "Kicks #$% For The Lord", and soon we have quite a little Zombie-party going on here. That is until Lionel's house becomes host to an actual party by his money-hungry Uncle Les. But no one tells the party-goers that the Zombie's are the real guests of honor! So what do you do when you have a party with eventually a hundred or so uninvited zombies? You break out the lawnmower and get to "weeding" them out, of course! I think I've told you enough to get your interest in this movie, but if that didn't do it, consider this: I personally own about 75 horror DVD's & Dead Alive is the most goriest, sickest, disturbing, and funniest of my bunch (it's even more of these things than "Evil Dead II:Dead By Dawn"!). The DVD has a nice, crisp picture that's letterboxed, and has a very nice stereo mix too. So, if you want a horror movie that you'll be finding yourself showing everybody you know again & again, then get Dead Alive! You won't be sorry........oh, I almost forgot about the Zombie-Baby! Well, I'll let you get the movie and see for yourself.

  Dead Alive, borderline fun/retarded
Review created: 03/09/08

This movie to start off was just nuts. Then it gets even more nuts. There is a crazy chase in the beginning with a super angry rat monkey also known as "Sanjaya". Then all the crazy gets even crazier. From ear soup, to zombie sex, to crazy evil babies, to the lawn mower mow down on the dance floor and finishing up with perhaps the meanest granny ever. This movie will leave you feeling queezy, dizzy, confused, and searching for a reason why you bought/rented it in the first place cause you know you'll never watch it again. Then maybe a way to rewrap it and fix the sticker back on it for a return. Peter Jackson may of made lord of the rings, but he definitely had a few kinks to work out before hand and this movie was one of them. Holy retardedness.

This has got to be one of the scariest, funniest movies of all time! Filmed prior to an age where mindblowing special effects have been replaced by mindnumbing CGI, Dead Alive is a must have for B-movie, cult classic, horror fans and collectors!

  A New Classic

This is perhaps one of the best "Camp Horror" movies in modern times. Peter Jackson shows his phenomenal styling throughout the picture. Being filmed in New Zealand it takes some getting used to in listening to their semi-aussie accents, but any Gore-fest, mixed with brilliant comedy and a dash of love story attached, becomes an amazing story. And a word of advice: When you go to the zoo, stay away from the monkey cage!

Dead Alive: Mum Would Very Much Like To Meat You
Review created: 09/15/03
by: jeremy1456 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Intense Action and Gore

Cons:
Confusing At First, Too Gross Most of the Time, A Little Corny In the Beginning

Horror movies have always been high up on the list of my favorite pastimes (second only to video games), but there are really only so many good movies to watch in a single genre of film before you run out. This is true for horror movie genre. It wouldn't be so bad if the ratio of good horror movies to bad wasn't already 1 : 25, and to make matters worse, the future doesn't look too good either. This is why you must look into the past to find the real quality titles, and during my search a few years ago I stumbled across a title, this was Dead Alive. From the description of the film it seemed..

"I Kick *rse For the Lord" in Peter Jackson's Zombie Gorefest!
Review created: 09/17/03
by: thevoid99 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A Brilliant, Over-The-Top Zombie Film from Peter Jackson.

Cons:
The Excessive Gore Fest & Violence Might Be Too Much for Many.

If there s a film genre that has its own little following, it s the zombie movies. From Night of the Living Dead to Evil Dead 2 , the zombie movies are always considered a guilty pleasure for some while hardcore fans can figure what makes a zombie film good or bad. In the past decade, there hasn t been a lot of zombie movies until recently when a small British indie film called "28 Days Later arrived and became a sleeper hit in the U.S. box office and thus reviving the zombie movie genre. With zombies making a comeback, there was another old zombie film that stood out and it came from the...

  Peter Jackson's Dead Alive
Review created: 03/28/00
by: Mike_Bracken-- a member of Epinions and Top Reviewer in Movies

Pros:
Funny, gory film

Cons:
not for the squeamish

Dead Alive AKA Braindead: Wingnut Films/ Trimark Pictures Rating: USA: Unrated/ USA: R/ UK: 18/ Australia: R The New York Daily News Phantom of the Movies called Peter Jackson s Dead Alive "the goriest fright film of all time", and I d be inclined to agree with him. Not since Sam Raimi second Evil Dead film has there been a movie that so ingeniously mixes black humor and over the-top gore. Dead Alive truly is the mother of all gore films. Timothy Balme is Lionel, a quiet, innocent young man who lives with his widowed mother (Elizabeth Moody: Heavenly Creatures) in a small New Zealand town. He.

They're not dead exactly, they're just... sort of rotting.
Review created: 10/06/01
by: dancingpotato -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
The goriest, funniest movie you're bound to find on the horror rack.

Cons:
Obviously not for everyone.

Epinions has done stuff for me that I never dreamt of. My movie-reviewing skill has grown exponentially since the days of the IMDB reviews. I ve discovered dozens of talented writers who have turned me onto some more obscure or underappreciated films. One in particular is Mike_Bracken. I think that the entire origin of this review should be credited to him as I would never have seen Dead Alive if I hadn t read his review. So there. Epinions actually helped me make a decision. Shouldn t this be part of some write-off? The horror section in my video store (my glorious mom-and-pop video store)...

The Goriest Fright Film Of All-Time!
Review created: 06/03/03
by: head-driller -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Excellent creature and gore effects, fun action sequences, cool cast of characters.

Cons:
More funny than scary, probably too extreme for most mainstream audiences.

Peter Jackson. Lately this man has become a power player in the movie industry. He made two blockbuster movies based on the Lord Of The Rings novels (with a third movie coming out in late 2003) and both movie received wide acclaim and raked in tons of money at the box office. Before Jackson hit it big with the Lord Of The Rings films though, he was directing Horror films. Jackson at the time was a cult favorite, directing cult classics such as Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles. In 1996 Jackson released The Frighteners, and unfortunately it did rather poorly at the box office and was quickly...
