  Great Laptop GPS
Review created: 06/19/06

The DeLorme Earthmate GPS Receiver is a yellow usb module that hooks up to your laptop. It usually comes with Streets & Maps (the newest being 2006), or RoadAtlas. There are various accessories, such as the bluetooth, battery-powered cradle, which allows you to use it wirelessly with your laptop or pda.

I've been using this for a couple months and I both have good and bad things to say about it.

Cons:The load-up time for the module, is about 60 seconds+. So if you take into account your laptop boot time, it'll take anywhere from 3-5minutes to startup, open the program, and synchronize. Another quirk was that when I was driving in a crest between two hills, I would lose signal and it would tell me I was going off course.

Pros: The bluetooth option certainly is very convenient and is compatible with my bluetooth headset, where I can, in turn, use voice command to control the Streets and Maps program. Another plus, was the interface was far more detailed than MS Streets & Trips which lacked voice command and other significant features. The GPS was very accurate, from location to speed.

This is certainly a great buy if you already have a laptop and don't want to spend money on a new GPS. It is very accurate and loses connection only less than 5% of the time.

  Off-Route! Recalculating Route! EXCELLENT!
Review created: 10/29/06(updated 09/06/07)

We've had a fascination for maps for decades. We've bought every mapping program that was available for the PC for at least 15 years. Suddenly, there were street-level maps with GPS receivers available. We WANTED ONE! We bought the DeLorme unit because we'd bought so many DeLorme paper maps and software products, and none had ever disappointed us. (If you get to Maine, plan on a trip to their store!)

While the maps were of extreme interest to us, the GPS was really the feature product in the package. We'd bought DeLorme mapping software for years, and watched as it got better every year. We loaded it on our laptops, and wished for the day that it would have the GPS option, and one we could afford.

The time is now! Unless you have the bucks to buy a dedicated unit, this is an effective, economical GPS routing and tracking system with some real smarts in it. It takes just a few minutes to set up your start and end points, add via's and stops, and let DeLorme figure out the Quickest or Shortest route. It'll use parameters you set for average speeds on various types of roads (might need some tweaking for your locale, we found them to be quite conservative). Click on the GPS Enable button, and within seconds the map will center on you location. You get a readout of direction of movement (not the direction the car is pointed!). You also get speed and altitude. Mind you, these are quite accurate! We've checked them against flight topomaps and actual known elevations.

The routing is uncanny. You'll know the distance remaining on the trip, the distance to the next route instruction, and estimated times for each. The route instruction will know about one-way roads, ramps, bridges, and more. The only beef is that the Shortest routes sometimes take you on little-known byways that really add time to the trip, unless you use some common sense. One example is the case where the expressway route across an intersection is actually longer than taking the ramps. DeLorme will have you on those ramps! Solution: Use Quickest, not Shortest.

Now, you know you don't want to be watching the screen while you're driving, right? If you have a navigator, that's simple. But if you're alone, you need no distractions! So let DeLorme SPEAK the instructions to you! Furthermore, you can SPEAK COMMANDS to the software. Hands off! We use a PC headset with mic and earphone.

Finally, our favorite feature. If you go off-course, either intentionally, or you miss a turn, DeLorme will inform you immediately, and provide you with instructions to get back on course! This varies from a very-simple "Turn around" to actually allowing you to go an alternate way towards your direction, and eventually recalculating to take you from wherever you are to your next stop. We used it on one trip thru Missouri. We heard at a fuel stop that there was a terrible tie-up down at Joplin, with miles of backup. We turned south off I44, and DeLorme was giving us revised route instructions to take us through the country to our destination, completely avoiding the tie-up and saving the headaches! It added maybe ten minutes to the total trip time!

GPS has been a great flight aid for over two decades. Now it's a great navaid for driving to new destinations. Once we'd tweaked the average speeds, we found we could call our friends eleven hours away and give them an ETA that was within five minutes of our actual arrival. And it's entertaining! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I bought a bunch of these from Ebay sellers as I'm in the delivery business with sub contractors working for me. I'm giving each one of my people a device for their laptops along with a mapping program.. MUCH CHEAPER THAN THE NEW GPS DEVICES THEY NOW SELL......
I like the idea of using a laptop as the screen is bigger and the speakers sound better.

A great travel aid and trip planner. Excellent mapping program and low cost easy to use GPS, with spoken direction and turn warning capability. Very portable when used with a laptop. A great value. Just remember to have a passenger operate it, or set it up before you start driving, so you keep your attention on the road.

DeLorme Earthmate GPS Receiver is a "Best Buy"
Review created: 09/17/07

DeLorme Earthmate GPS Receiver...it works perfectly! I purchased the GPS unit for my upcoming vacation. I traveled by plane to Las Vegas from Orlando, FL going on a family vacation to the west. The software setup and GPS Receiver were very simple to setup within minutes. My laptop ruan the software with ease. My 10 year old daughter actually ran the program while I was driving and my wife did not use the road map for any directions. I was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive product. It made our trip to unchartered waters very enjoyable. The software included ATMs, Hotels, POI, shopping area and more!! This is perfect for transporting in any environment. Overall, I'd recommend the DeLorme Earthmate GPS Receiver to anyone with or without a budget.

This is the first GPS software I have used. I was pleased that within 10 minutes I was creating routes and using it successfully to guide me on my trip. On the down side it can sometimes be slow in recalculating the route. In a small town in VA it routed me the wrong way on a one-way street, I was five or six blocks down the correct street before it caught up. The up side for me was that using it was so intuitive, I've spent as much time on Microsoft Streets and Trips and am still lost. I understand that taking as much as three minutes for the Earthmate to hook up to sats is common for all GPS devices and when traveling in the mountains of southern VA it never lost contact with the sats.

Receiver works fine, software very inaccurate for Canadian maps. Some Provincial Highway ramps outed by 15 years and streets by as much as 10 years. Use a DeLorme GPS receiver but there is MUCH better software out there.

  Good alternative to a GPS

I purchased the receiver used and generally pleased with the features and size of this product. Not quite a business traveler tool, but a good car traveling companion. Map software I purchased seperate and is not bad, but still could use a little work. It successfully navigated me from point A to point B.

  DeLorme GPS opinion
Review created: 04/02/07

Since this is the first GPS/software product I have used it is hard to say how good it is since I have nothing to compare it too. However it did take some time to learn to navigate the software. My philosophy is "the easier, the better".

  Earthmate GPS Receiver
Review created: 01/06/07

I really like this item because it was very inexpensive. New, it's about $100 or so and on Ebay got it for about $40. GPS's in general are very expensive.$400-$600 Down side is I had no instructions that came with it. Good news is the online information was easy to go through. With my 15" screen on my laptop, it is easy to see the map when I travel. Works for me!

I should have bought a new one

I was looking for a roadmate type system. I looked on ebay and found the earthmate receiver and software. Payed 68 dollars and have never got the receiver to hook up with the stars yet. So you ask for it now you know the real story. This is not the first bad deal I have bought on ebay. Have a great day.

  Earthmate LT20 GPS
Review created: 08/05/06
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I went looking for this particular GPS to replace one that had died and was no longer in production. The LT20 is popular and has gotten decent reviews in GPS related websites. I like the fact that this unit is USB, as that makes life easier all around. It's small and easy to throw into the car's console or laptop bag. I don't like that it's yellow. It's too much a target sitting on the dashboard. Maybe I'll paint it black.... Mine is an early production unit, and the cable doesn't seat properly in the unit, have to reseat it a couple of times. Note: This one was a used unit. I had to use some trickery to get it to work with MS Streets and Trips, but it works fine once setup properly. I would recommend this unit to anyone who needs a small, lightweight, yet fully functional GPS.

Earthmate GPS LT-20 and Street Atlas USA 2006
Review created: 06/07/06
by: lsander -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Price. Amazing GPS capability. Outstanding customer service department. Good online forums and knowledge base.

Cons:
User interface is unlike most Windows products. Lack of "how-to" documentation.

This is the bundle with the 2006 Street Atlas software. There seem to have been significant improvements over the 2005 software, which is still being sold in various outlets in June, 2006. I've been interested in GPS since I first heard about it, but the price has always been too high to justify purchasing a system. When I got a new notebook computer, it freed up the old one for other uses. Since I'm planning a weekend trip where I'll need some navigational help, I looked into the current prices of notebook-compatible GPS systems. At $100 or less, the DeLORME was a very affordable solution,...

  Buyer Beware
Review created: 02/21/07
by: divemaster5734 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Nice looking display

Cons:
Buy this product if you enjoy yelling at your computer, getting lost, and driving in circles.

I initially purchased the Delorme 2006 GPS package in late 2005. I use it for business, I am an emergency service electrician. I cover the north Seattle area, so these issues are in a major city setting, which you would think would be well mapped out. I have a laptop mounted in my work truck, with an internet air card, and printer, I have a full functioning office on wheels. The Delorme software was so flawed, I finally gave up using it, and bought a different brand in early 2006. Almost a year later, I got an email from Delorme, stating some of my suggestions were incorporated into the 2007..
