If you ve read any of my other reviews on Pearl Jam you ll know that Ten was my favorite release from the band, that Vs was a pale comparison and that anything after that just doesn t cut it in my books. Yeah, Pearl Jam's Daughter is overplayed, especially since the decade-old tune is on classic rock stations. Sure, I prefer hearing a live version any day of the week. But those facts don't take away from the excellence of the song itself. Daughter, probably the most well-known single from Vs., is a fine rock song filled with emotion and solid musicianship. Daughter is a sad tale of a young girl who tries to please her mother but remains neglected. The chorus of "Don't call me daughter/ Not fit to" shows the defiant stance the girl takes, as does the song's apex: "She holds the hand that holds.
