Darkness on the Edge of Town - Springsteen, Bruce (Cassette 1990)

GROWIN' UP SPRINGSTEEN IV: "i believe in a promised land"

Pros:
Keen and realistic rumination on the erosion of the American dream.

Cons:
Not as musically exciting as earlier (and some later) works.

It happens to the best of us: life reaches a sort of crossroads, a tumultuous sort of catalyst where you can sit back and cry about it, or you can do your best to make it better. I'm going to assume, for the benefit of this review, that anyone bothering to read the opinion of a writer of minor popularity dissecting, essay-by-essay, the discography of Bruce Springsteen, MUST be an avid (perhaps downright rabid) music lover; either that, or you're just a huge fan of my writing. I'm going to assume it's the former, because I'm relatively certain that the only person truly amused by my writing is.

When You Realize How They Tricked You This Time

Pros:
Pop-an-artery rock, moody, intense, passionate, raw

Cons:
A little too much testosterone, but really that's okay

Writing my Janis Joplin book review caused me to go back through some older CDs, and I happened upon Springsteen. Bruce. My boy. My man. My companion on many a long night's drive... I pulled out Darkness On The Edge Of Town, as that's really my favorite, mostly just to see how it's held up after all these years. How did it do? Tell you later. Prologue Bruce Springsteen owned the world in 1975, with the release and overwhelming success of Born To Run. Bruce's manager at that time was a man named Mike Appel (who I came to know personally. One word: snake.) Bruce and Mike had a falling out. An...

Bruce battles the "Darkness" and delivers a classic.

Pros:
Bruce gets older and wiser, but no less life-affirming.

Cons:
Some people find it underproduced.

Bruce Springsteen represents many things to many people. To many people, he's an embodiment of the escape that rock and roll always promised. To some, he literally is the spirit of rock. And to a few (specifically former actors who think they're qualified to run for president), he's some patriotic American ho sings about how great life in America is. But no matter how you look at him, it's impossible to not listen to one of his songs or albums and not identify with it in some regard. Now regarding my position on Mr. Springsteen and his work, I would call myself something of a casual fan. I...

Pros:
Great songs, no weak songs

Cons:
-

Every LP or CD of Bruce Springsteen The Boss has its attraction. At least every fan will report this, but what do I think of his early songs? You ll find many good songs on this brilliant album! __Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town__ The fourth album of Bruce Springsteen needed almost three years from writing the first notes on a sheet of paper up to reaching the shelves into the stores all around the world. As expected the boss Bruce Springsteen produced a great and well selling album. Now I d like to tell you something about the album and the songs. Track 01 __04:04__ *****...

  An artist bleeding
Review created: 05/26/00
by: mrleemrlee -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Passion, musicianship, and writing

Cons:
Might scar you emotionally

A blaze of glory, a anthem of almost military might opens Bruce Springsteen's "Darkness on the Edge of Town." The song is "Badlands," and the singer is full of enraged determination, determination to "spit in the face of these Badlands." So begins the narrative that this album, Springsteen's fourth, spins. For years, Springsteen opened his shows with "Badlands" as well. And it makes a fitting opening for a great album that is a triumph of artistic agony, an album that lays bare Springsteen's soul for all to see. And a narrative it is. For the main character, the singer, is someone cast out of.
