D-link AirPlus™ DI-524 Wireless Router

I am a System Administrator by trade, so I have seen lots of wireless routers that have problems, but this is not one of them.
I have had this for 3 years and I never have to mess with it.
I found it very easy to setup custom routing rules for bittorrent.

Some things to keep in mind:
Keep it away from other electronics. If you have a 2.4Ghz phone, that can interfear with the signal.
If you have many wireless routers within range, make sure your is not running on the same channel. (If everyone is on ch.2, you want ch.11)
If you are going to add wireless to a desktop PC, your best bet is to buy the wireless card that matches your router.

Set up easy
dsl lines drops and loos modem but quick reset by unplug or turn off
Have had it for over 6 months now and dropped 4 or 5 times only to have to reset. Not bad I don't think.
Just added another computer with the d-link g54 desktop adapter wireless -g and it picked up immediately connect to all my computers!
A+ speed too!

I will start right off the bat stating that this router is probably the cheapest high-speed wireless and wired network router for home users. That being said, it also is one of the worst, but, if you are on a budget, it is great. Here is a list of pros and cons (that I had experience with):

First, after about a weeks use of this the wireless signal started to act up. I made sure it wasn't phone interference or such things as walls, bathrooms, ceilings, etc. Nothing. I couldn't find what was happening. Then I decided to do a simple ping yahoo.com -t. This yielded something crazy, the ping would timeout every 10 seconds randomly, and miss around 3 pings. This is VERY annoying if you stream music, play ONLINE GAMES, or do anything live over the internet. You couldn't really tell if you were just browsing the net. I came to a conclusion on why it did this: I had fried the chips from the bandwidth I was sending through it.

I do a lot of downloading (a crazy amount) so my bandwidth isn't normal. But I would recommend anyone who does do the same as I do: download, stream music, serve a website, and play online games at the same time, to not get this router but spend the extra $20 to get a better Linksys router.

Pros--
Easy to setup, even for the non-technical people out there. Wireless worked fine: when it worked. =)

Overall, it's great if you are a home user with less than 3 computers, and you do not have a lot of traffic on your network (only web browsing, streaming, and other light stuff).

Hey, it's cheap, what can you say!

I am a two platform computer owner: Apple and PC. I own a Gateway Profile 4 desktop and an Apple PowerBook Titanium notebook computer. I found this D-Link for a great price (after rebates) and after a lot of configuration hassles have finally been very pleased with how this router/WiFi access point works. D-Link tech support was very helpful with troubleshooting my problem, which turned out to be an outdated cable modem. The DI-524 is proving to be a good answer to my problem of how to connect a Windows-based desktop and an Apple wireless notebook to my high-speed internet service.

I am sorry to say that I have not had a good experience with this router. I live in a small town and this model was the only one that the local computer store carried. I like to support local businesses so I bought one. It worked at first, but a day or two after I started using it it mysteriously stopped working; all the port lights were lit solid and I could not get online. And even when it did work it would drop the signal every couple of minutes. I thought it was faulty so I took it back to the store and exchanged it for another one. I set that one up and it worked for a week or two, but then it stopped. I detected the wireless network, but couldn't get online. I could not figure out how to fix the connection. Now maybe this is because I am not that good with computers...but shortly after this I came home one day and all the lights were on solid - just like what happened with the first one. I returned this one to the store. The owner told me that I was actually the 3rd person in a month to have problems with this model. He was so fed up that he stopped carrying this brand and now a router by a different manufacturer is the only one he sells in his small store.
