Curse of the Golden Flower (2007, DVD)

I did not enjoy the movie, I think the ending was too soon in the story and the plot was very simple.

This movie starts out slow. My husband refused to watch it at first thinking it might be a chic flick, and then.. BAM! The movie broke out with better effects than the Matrix. The ninjas kicked everyones butt!, and oh my GOD, were the Ninja scenes amazing!! Imagine Bruce Lee ten fold!! No, a 1000 fold!! Such an amazing movie. We cant stand subtitles, but this was truly an effects movie for the record books! Ive NEVER saw battle scenes like this and I am a very AVID movie goer. MUST SEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Riveting! Painfully beautiful and sad. Must watch at least twice to catch all the intrigue and undercurrents of love, hate, regret, and revenge. All the reasons are revealed if you watch closely. Spoken entirely in old Mandarin with english subtitles, I guarantee that, even if you hate subtitles, you will enjoy this movie.

The story captures you. I even didn't mind the subtitles. Special effects were great, and I love a good historical movie.

Video was in great shape, very little scratches on DVD. DVD came very fast to me- Thank you! I appreciate your services.

Same actors and actress's, good movie. Quick to the point, you know what you are getting into I would I hope. Nothing worth getting too excited for though.

I bought this DVD as a birthday gift for my father. The delivery is fast, the disc is in good condition. My dad really love it. I love it, too. Plus, <Curse of the Golden Flower> is a great movie!

Let get to it....

The good:
1. The Story - Okay, what this movie was really about Power and the exercise of power. And I have to give a nod to the director as he was pretty accurate in showing something so primal core to human and projected on to a screen. And it is a subject that trancent into any cultures. (This movie is more like a shakespeare's play by Chinese actor while in Rome) A nod to the director for a somewhat successful exercise.

2. The Visual - Wow, Very colourful, but in the background you can always feel there was something wrong. The setting acutally caputured the feeling of entrapment - really reminded me of a bird inside a beautiful gold-gilled cage -as well as some paranoia.

3. The Action - Come on, Asian movies pretty much define the modern days Mexican stand off. Without giving the plot away, it was well done.


The Bad:
1. The story got very distracted by stunning visual - and it feels a bit empty at the end.. almost anticlimatic.

2. Characters development were a bit shallow in many cases and their motivations are no crystal clear. Other time the movie spend too long on a single character's action. - Which slow down the movie.


Verdict?
This movie maybe a bit too heavy on the drama side. If you looking for something for the weekend on a rainy day. Do yourself a favor and don't rent this puppy - wayy too heavy.

However, if you see a movie like "300" for it historical reason (and mostly, for fighting scene) , this movie might be a good choice for you as it got what everything you needs.

This movie is full of twists and intrigue and beautiful scenery. This is my favorite DVD of 2007. It is even better than "HERO" and "House of Flying Daggers".

Excellent costume and scenery, forbidden loves and great romantic stories. It makes more sense if start with the story on how the emperor obtain his power. It was too weak as a flash back as why the empress wanted to revenge and destroy his throne. Very tragic ending.....

Love the pictures and all the colors but the thing is it was confusing i had watched it once and how it looked on the previews it made it look very good but i am dissappointed i wish it could have been better than what it was the fight sences were cool. I would give it a 7 cause i have seen better.
