Cop Land (1998, VHS)

Poor pin-ball playing sheriff picked on by pretentious police pals
Review created: 06/10/04
by: mrblonde79 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
On par performances, abundant character development, smoothly executed action scenes

Cons:
central plot veers mildly off course after the film's first half

Director/screenwriter James Mangold's police drama Cop Land is one of those films that you have to view more than just once to embrace the sheer velocity of its characters

  Good Cast, Slow Film
Review created: 06/14/04

Pros:
That cast!

Cons:
Sluggish pace and performances

Let's face it. Copland is a movie that has one hell of a great cast: Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, and Robert DeNiro. It's not something you see every day. Unfortunately, the movie was largely ignored at the box office and by the audiences which is strange given the talent involved. But it perhaps provided a little more strength in Sly Stallone's fading career and proved that he's still an actor before an action star. Copland is the story of small town schlub Freddy Heflin (Stallone), a wannabe NYPD cop sidelined by a bad ear infection. The disability is the result of saving..

Cop Land=Superb Movie With A Few Exceptions
Review created: 07/06/00

Pros:
Cop Land is compelling, and its characters ring true. Keitel is at his scummy best. Robert De Niro is solid as an internal affairs investigator. But Stallone s honest and human portrayal of a decent man who s let too much go by makes this film work.

Cons:
It gives the impression that every New York City police officer is crooked, and just about everyone else is either helpless or willing to go along with it.

It s appropriate to begin with a confession. After all, there s a major shortage of honesty among the characters in Cop Land, so someone s got to take the lead. My confession is that I don t like Sylvester Stallone. Or at least I didn t like him until I saw Cop Land. It seems that everyone but me loved Stallone in his many previous roles as a macho hero. The tough guy routine struck me as more an ego-trip than an attempt to laugh at the macho clich . It just never worked for me. And now, while some are not thrilled with Stallone s Cop Land portrayal of the imperfect Sheriff Freddy Heflin, I...

  "COP LAND"...Hometown, USA?
Review created: 10/11/00

Pros:
Outstanding performance by Sly!

Cons:
Not nearly long enough!

Can you imagine Robert DeNiro upstaged by Sylvester Stallone? It's 1997, and this is 105 minutes of Action and Suspense, directed by James Mangold, and starring Sylvester Stallone, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Janeane Garofalo, Robert Patrick, Michael Rapaport, Annabella Sciorra. This is a "must see" for Stallone fans! Well, here we are at the end of the nineties, and Sly finally goes back to his roots, and proves the big lug can act! James Mangold has taken Scorsese regulars DeNiro, Keitel, and Liotta, cast them in a typical Scorsese film, and thrown in a little name like...

An incredible cast with nothing to do
Review created: 06/20/00
by: JackFoley -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Stallone, Keitel, DeNiro, and Liotta

Cons:
Boring, meaningless uninteresting characters and plot

This is the kind of film that just blows my mind, but not in a good way. You've got the legends of the crime film, Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta. You've got Sylvester Stallone in a role for which be put on 40 pounds. And you give them nothing to do?! How they convinced these guys to star in a mediocre at best crime film is beyond me. It's one of those flukes in the history of cinema. Stallone is the sheriff of a small New York town right across the river from New York City. It's where all the cops live to be safe away from the big city. But they also run the town and are...
