Clive Barker is amazing. His vivid detail and fearless writting style make him my favorite read. For me, this book ranks right up there with the damnation game for shocking thrills and chills. What an amazing ride, mind blowing!!!

  Great Author!

Clive Barker has always been my favorite author, therefore, this review is biased. I bought this particular because I had not yet read it.

While the subtitle, "A Hollywood Ghost Story", did nothing to intrigue me to read it, the story was quite compelling--as are the rest of Barker's works. At first, a couple of the characters in the story were a little difficult to warm up to, however, I could not put the book down until it was read from cover to cover!

I love the alternate realities that Clive Barker always brings into his writings. While science-based reality tells us that these other realities cannot possibly exist, he unravels his stories in such a way that makes one wonder if maybe, just maybe, somewhere out there...Is it possible?

The passion, fears, disdain, curiosity, contempt, as well as the other feelings that the characters in Barker's stories feel are portrayed in such a way that enables the reader to not just know, but also feel what the characters are experiencing.

As I said, Clive Barker has always been my favorite author, therefore, my opinion is quite biased! I would encourage anyone who enjoys a brief escape from reality to read his works!!! He has written many wonderful books, such as The Great and Secret Show, and Coldheart Canyon. However, my favorite has been Weaveworld since the first time I read it--and I have read that particular book several times! (Of which, I do not normally reread something once it is done.)

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I!

Secluded Canyon Estate: Subterranean Tiled Bonus Room Must Be Seen To Be Believed!

Pros:
Dazzling imagery.

Cons:
Terrifying and bestial imagery.

A number of years ago, I took a road less traveled in my local bookstore, and discovered the bizarre, brilliant and troubling world of English fantastical horror author, Clive Barker. Learning that the prolific writer, was also responsible for such jaw-dropping films as the Hellraiser series, and one of my all-time favorite cult classics, Nightbreed, wasn't such a large stretch, after reading Books of Blood, Weaveworld and the like. Barker, however doesn't stop with novels, short stories, film scripts-oh no. Recently we've been treated to cable television's twisted fright fest, Saints and...

  The Ghosts of Hollyweird

Pros:
Barker has an electric imagination

Cons:
Something seems to have short-circuited

I can imagine Clive Barker falling asleep on the sofa one night while watching Sunset Boulevard, then waking in the wee hours halfway through a showing of Splatter Cinema Showcase and getting a very bright idea for his next novel. Hollywood. Has-beens. Ghosts. Sex. Angels. Cretinous atrocities resembling the love children of H.P. Lovecraft and Mary Shelley. Yes, the elements are all there for horrormeister Barker to whip up weirdness a la ready-for-her-close-up Norma Desmond and the author s own Nightbreed. Why not throw in a dash of Touched by an Angel for good measure? The result is...

Sympathy for the Devilish: Clive Barker's Coldheart Canyon
Review created: 02/18/03

Pros:
seductive and nightmarish

Cons:
loosely plotted; overblown climax

Years ago, back in my college days, I met a science-fiction writer. He came to this class I was taking, to discuss a book of his that we were assigned to read. The book, Beyond Heaven's River wasn't a very good one, I'm afraid, and the author, Greg Bear, has since gone on to write better stuff, I take it, having won numerous awards including the Nebula, twice, for Best Novel. I was really into movies at the time (still am) and so was this friend of mine and, even though we were suppose to be discussing Mr. Bear's book, those were the type of questions we ended up asking. As it turns out, Greg.

Haunted Hollywood by the other master of horror
Review created: 01/01/02
by: sampo24 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
What a story! It's impossible not to be caught up in it.

Cons:
Should have ended about 100 pages before it did.

Clive Barker is one of my favorite horror authors, besides Stephen King. And like Stephen King, he is unfairly branded as "merely" a horror writer, when in reality he is extremely gifted at blending many different genres and constantly suprising us. With the wide scope of writing that he has done over the years, it is impossible to put a single label on him. And he's certainly done it again with Coldheart Canyon, one of his best books in years. Todd Pickett is the all-american hero of Hollywood's blockbuster action flicks. But the years are starting to show and he's not getting the attention..

The Master of Horror takes on Hollywood
Review created: 10/28/01
by: barb_welch -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Mesmerizing, horrific, erotic -- true Clive Barker

Cons:
None

Clive Barker is a true literary master whose prose flows like poetry. When you add to this that he is also a master at delving into the deepest recesses of our psyche and bringing all of our greatest fears and most forbidden fantasies out into the light of day, you have a powerful combination for a writer of horror fiction. This time, Mr. Barker takes on Hollywood. Mingling both the Hollywood of the 1920s and the Hollywood of today and showing that they are really not so different. Todd Pickett, a popular movie star on the downward slide of fame desperately decides to get cosmetic surgery to..
