Donald Fagen & Walter Becker (aka Steely Dan) are musical and lyrical geniuses. They have a rare, abundant talent and the fact that they teamed is an example of a rare moment in history that can be looked on in retrospect and produce only a great thank you to fate, God, Allah, whomever was responsible.
These guys laid the groundwork for a new sound of music that can only be described as jazz/blues/rock/r&b fusion; it's easier to just call the style Steely Dan. Genius, pure genius; a mix of jazz-infused bass lines and percussion, jazz, rock and blues guitar and piano, and vocals that span the gamut of musical stylings but always supported by solid R&B background vocals. That's just the music.
Lyrically, these guys are equally talented. With a sarcastic wit, laced with word play, metaphors, and straight-forward jabs, they probe society's many issues with the grace of a toddler learning to walk. They just don't care and you can tell. If they want to say it, they're going to say it. End of story. Thanks for listening.
Here we are 35 years later, after the band has "split" (which they really never did because Fagen and Becker continued working with each other on "solo" projects), reformed to record 2 new albums that are equally genius yet matured, and the guys are receiving grammy's and are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Citizen Steely Dan includes every song from the 7 albums released between 1972 & 1980 plus some B-sides, a previously unreleased demo, 1 additional release from a soundtrack and 1 from the greatest hits compilation. Much like Spinal Tap's perfectly descriptive movie title, THIS IS STEELY DAN; all that they have to offer. The box set includes a book with album liner notes, obscure pictures and off-the-wall letters to anyone that deserved their sarcasm (which is basically anyone in the establishment), and critics reviews of their albums (some that weren't even very polite, but these guys enjoy laughing at themselves as much as they do at others).
Needless to say, I'm a huge fan. But I would venture to say that anyone who likes Steely Dan's radio fare ("Do It Again", "Reelin' In The Years", "My Old School", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Black Cow", Aja", "Peg", "Deacon Blues", "Josie", "FM", "Hey Nineteen") would do themself a huge favor by buying this box set and truly experiencing Steely Dan.
The deep cuts, the stuff that was too long for radio play or too controversial or too "experimental", or too this or that, that is where you find the true Steely Dan and once you find the true Steely Dan, you may be disappointed by most music in comparison.
These guys prove that music requires more than the ability to tune a guitar and play a few chords (perhaps even pull off a solo) with some cheesy lyrics about the girl next-door, or the fact that your parents didn't love you, or the state of the world from a generic point of view. Fagen and Becker show how music can tell a story and when they use words, listen close, because you'll hear some significant stuff in the midst of all that music.
These guys were way ahead of their time. Music has gotten louder and lyrics racier, but when you put Steely Dan in the context of the 70's, you can see that Fagen and Becker were living in the future; still are really, and who knows when the rest of us will catch up.
Do yourself a favor; if you're reading this, it's because you are considering buying this box set. JUST DO IT. You won't regret it.

A solid classic of all Steely Dan songs from "Can't Buy a Thrill" to "Gaucho".
A perfect addition to any one who wants a total Steely Dan Collection before their 'semi-retirement'.

I've loved music by Steely Dan for years, and have owned all of their music on vinyl. This is the best collection of this bands'music that I could have ever hoped to have owned on cds. Anyone that might be questioning whether or not to purchase this set would definitely not be disappointed if they did so. Lisa S.

Steely Dan Write-Off--Hats Off To Citizen Steely Dan

Pros:
Greatness in the truest sense of the word, Deaser26 likes Steely Dan

Cons:
What?

This is my entry into the Steely Dan Write-Off graciously hosted by my fellow music freak, Deaser26. Thanks, Dease, for the invite, and I hope I do you proud. "America's finest maybe non-rock band".....Robert Palmer, New York Times, 1977. That quote may be an apt description for Steely Dan, a musical act that clearly cannot be defined by conventional words. Actually, Steely Dan is not a band at all--two pretty unassuming, nerdy guys named Walter Becker and Donald Fagan are really who make up Steely Dan--they employed sessions players and other musicians in the recording studio to help them...

Pros:
4 full CDs of Steely Danness. Pretty much as complete as it gets.

Cons:
It ends.

I owe my father and my friend James big for this one. I may have never dabbled in the world of Steely Dan if it weren't for those two, and never known the joy that is their music. What's that you say? You have no idea who Steely Dan is? Well, that can be easily remedied. The two main band members of Steely Dan are two ultralaidback fellows named Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They went to Bard College together, worked together writing cynical little ditties for ABC, then went out and started writing for their own CDs. Boy, am I glad they did. Now a short diversion. These guys are a little....

The most essential and complete boxed set in popular music

Pros:
A superb retrospective of one of the great musical duos of all time, superbly packaged.

Cons:
if you have all the original albums...??

First coming together in the late 1960s and united by a shared interest in jazz and Dylan lyrics, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, as Steely Dan, made some of the most popular music of the 1970s, to reaction ranging from adoration to hatred from the music business - who saw them either as overproduced and slick or a hyper-intelligent craftsmen. There can be no doubt to my ears that, at their best, Steely Dan produced some of the most literate and intelligent pop music that has ever been made. The combination of jazzy arrangements and Fagen's brilliant lyrical skill that turned storytelling...

Ultimate Steely Dan in one box

Pros:
covers everything a Steely Dan fan wants to hear

Cons:
The Live cut of Bodhisattva - not that good.

We have a 5 disc player mainly for this. I must have my Steely Dan. Citzen Steely Dan covers everything up to the newest release Two Against Nature. Starting with the first songs on disc one, the jazz influence rings through strong. The music, arrangement and lyrics are flawless. Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had the cream of the crop for studio musicians playing with them throughout their history. It shows through on all the songs. Steely Dan has a song that fits every mood. Upbeat, rocking songs such as Reelin' In The Years and Black Friday will keep a person moving. Mellow, introspective..

 deja vu all over again
Review created: 03/02/01
by: Godai-kun -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Every album track from the first 7 Dan albums in a four-disc set.

Cons:
Almost nothing BUT previously-released material.

"Citizen Steely Dan" is the answer to the question of how to listen to 8 well-worn Steely Dan albums on a 5-disc changer. (Wait a minute, Godai...didn't you say this set contained _7_ albums?) Well, yes...but I am including the "Decade of Steely Dan" anthology, which was for years about the only way to get the smooth "FM" theme. Stick these 4 discs in the machine, and you're in for 3 1/2 hours of pure music from Dan and company, including a few cuts you may never have heard before. And that is the primary problem with this set. unlike other boxed sets which offer insight into the band's...
