Everything about this CD and show is supurb!! The highlight is Ann Reinking though. She plays Roxie, a role she played 20 years previously, so well. Her comic timing and charisma are second to none. She has a lovely huskey alto belt voice!! She is quite possibly the best Roxie!! And WOW! What a dancer!!!
If you are a broadway fan, you'll love it, if the only familiarity you have with this music is from the movie, you probably won;t like it. The singers are wonderful and much better than the movie.

Pros: Good Contrast
Cons: To Jazz like
Chicago is a tricky show to have a good or bad opinion on because it so often takes the middle path. There are critics to rave the music and then there are others who shunt it. So I have a mixed view on this show. The show is about a women named Roxy who commits a murder. She Kills a man and all of a sudden she is the talk of the town. The women in this show all become famous, movie star famous by committing a murder. There is a wonderful number in the begging of the show a tango about the women who commit these crimes, they say "they had it coming all along." by they, their talking about...

Pros: The most honestly adult musical ever.
Cons: Not for those who loved "Cats"
"Chicago: The Musical" is the story of Roxie Hart, who shoots her lover and finds herself in a prison full of sexy femme fatales. Based on a true story, "Chicago" follow Roxie as she slithers her way through the legal system, meeting shady characters at every turn. This musical is pure and unadulterated Fosse, an erotic kick in the ass that will leave you begging for more. One of the most impressive aspects of this CD is the stars who were combined on the "Chicago" cast. This cast includes my "Law

Chicago (1997 Broadway Revival Cast)

Pros: Great show, great packaging, some newly recorded material
Cons: Cast of great dancers doesn't come off well on CD
Although not the equal of the 1975 original, this recording is still a nice record of one of the most successful revivals of recent years. The Show This production of Chicago had its beginnings at City Center Encores! Encores! presents concert versions of lesser-known musicals. Its Chicago was directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking in the style of Bob Fosse, the show's original director, choreographer, and co-author. It was a smash and was mounted on Broadway with surprisingly few changes: William Ivy Long's costumes were sexy variations on concert black and John Lee...

Pros: fun songs, great performers
Cons: none
Chicago is a great musical, and I highly recommend this version of the soundtrack. Bebe Neuwirth is stunning. She has an incredible voice, and she plays the part of Velma very well. (I saw her on Broadway) Also worth hearing on this are Joel Grey as Amos and the guy who plays Billy Flynn, whose name I can't remember offhand. This show has some of Broadway's funniest songs in it, including "Cellblock Tango", "We Both Reached for the Gun", and "Mr. Cellophane", as well as really hot jazz numbers like "All That Jazz" and "Hot Honey Rag". It's fast-paced and fun. I especially like to listen to it.
