Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was one of my all time favorite movies as a kid. Of course, I was always a big fan of Gene Wilder, then again, I'm a huge fan of Johnny Depp as well. Although I thought the modern technology and brilliant colors in the new version of the movie were outrageous and delightful, I honestly liked the original better. A Lot of the movie parts differed from the original which I don't adept to very easily. For example: the part where the 4 family members are all in the same bed... It wasn't like the first one exactly and I actually noticed a few things that were quite different which I wasn't crazy about. Initially, many people and critics gave the new version ratings that weren't very confident and nearly everyone said that Johnny Depp was to weird for their liking. I on the other hand was quite intrigued by Depp. His character was a tad loopy and that was what made him charming. I am a bit partial towards Depp anyway. At any rate, I would recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. I'd even go as far as buying the DVD for my children and myself. In fact, having the original and the remake in the home could make for some interesting conversation. I hope this helps and encourages you to go rent the movie.

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton team up again in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - a hilarious and wildly visual remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Just like any other Tim Burton movie, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is fantastic to watch - great color, production and direction. And just like any other Johnny Depp movie, its very well acted.
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton got rave reviews for the movie which drove strong box office success nationally and abroad. Kids and parents alike will enjoy the movie - for different reasons. Either way, its a very fun and different twist on a classic movie... and I'm always up for a Depp / Burton combination:

I bought it because a young girl that I care about really, really, really likes Johnny Depp and she hadn't seen this movie. She absolutely loves it. I don't really care about it all that much, but I came from the era of the first movie and liked it. She was very happy with it and she needed some happiness in her life.

When you go movie shopping this is a great choice for an audience craving a mysterious story and humor. The story line is superb and is an excellent release. I definately bought this expecting the magic of the original. I surely was wrong and miss the classic. This remake seens more dark and less cheery.

His characters are truely a wonder to watch. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are the perfect pair. The movie is pure magic and Depp is magic as a weird and wonderful Willie Wonka. All the wicked little children are soo evil you love to hate them and Charlie is just as lovable as ever!

an excellent fantasy moviei love this movie & any other that Johnny Depp stars in because he gives his films a whimsical aura to them. Although this is billed as a children's movie & they like it, there are many nuances that will only be caught by more mature minds - so it is also a great movie for adults.
Some people may not be appreciative of the "fantasy" aspect of this title, and may compare it to Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in a negative way. But it is still a great story with lots of entertainment value.

I bought this product for my kids. They saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie on TV and the love its music. When we saw this movie, we realized it was not the same version that they watched on TV. My younger kid asked for the Oompa Loompa Dee Doo song and this version does not has it. But he likes it anyway. Now the call the older version "a puzzle for you" and the new version "Augustus Gloop". I ended buy the older version too and they are enjoying both.

I never really liked the old version of this film. So I was a little hesitent about seeing this new one. But doubt soon turned to delight as I got caught up in the fun. Tim Burton did a great job at making it a litte mysterous, but not scary and showing the importance of family and parents into the mix.
Jonny Depp did a superb job at showing his diverse acting skills being the very boyish Wille.
I enjoyed this film and I do every time my family pulls it out and watches it.

I love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. They have made some of my favorite movies - Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow - but this one is not a favorite.
I did like the movie and it was due a remake - blasphemy, I know. But to appeal to a younger generation you need a fresher look, especially for amovie like this.

I just got finished watching it. First of all, I just love Johnny Depp since I saw Pirates of the Caribbean 7 times at the theatre. I've never much liked Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but since my husband does, when I saw this in the store, I bought yesterday and decided to give it a try since I just love Johnny Depp. I like this version, probably because I like that Johnny Depp is a much more pleasant person in this version than Gene Wilder. At least that's my observation.

I have always loved the original movie with Gene Wilder (and still do), but this is an excellent remake. I especially like that the story stays pretty true to the book written by Roald Dahl (example: the Dad was included and yes, he worked in a toothpaste factory). Johnny Depp's character is wonderful and so funny. From the moment when he appears with googly glasses and greets everyone with, "Good morning starshine. The earth says hello!!" I was totally hooked. The movie was so well written. I love the boy who played Charlie, he was perfectly cast. Deep Roy was certainly busy as the only Oompah Loompah, it is amazing what computer magic can do! The glass elevator and the boat ride were exhilarating rides. Glimpsing Wonkas childhood makes you understand him even more. My husband LOVES the soundtrack by Oingo Boingo throughout.*****5 stars.

I'm always a little worried about the remakes of classic movies because I think they will be horrible but this one really turned out great. The only thing I didn't like that they changed was the oompa loompa's. It creeped me out that it was the same one and not different ones like in the original one. Other than that though it wsa really great! The visual effects were amazing! It's a must see!

I had really high hopes for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it couldn't match up to the original. This version tells the same classic story with a modern edge for a new generation of kids. The movie shows a more advanced and more twisted chocolate factory, which serves to better hold the attention and wonder of today's children. Willy Wonka, played by Johnny Depp seams crazy and intriguing... a little disturbing, the Oompa Loompa's have lost most of there charm and mysteriousness in this version, and Charlie is the same good-hearted little boy.
I enjoyed the original movie so much more. Willy Wonka, as psychotic didn't work will for the movie. The visuals were more intense, but not as interesting or as intricate. It was like watching my favorite musical performed by junior high students, where songs are replaced by modern ones and the costumes are less dramatic. Stick with the original.

This movie was OK, but nothing special. I'm no fan of the musical but watched the original, which was that, over ten times as a kid. This one seemed instead to have been made without passion, as though it were Burton's toy rather than his work. Depp, for instance, could have done much better -- his twisted portrayal was one trademark element pretty unique to Burton, though the rest seemed to belong in Vegas rather than on the big screen.
It was an entertaining watch but not one that I'd buy over the original. Maybe one I'd place next to it in a bundled set. The kids might like it but it seems these days that cute faces and bright colors are enough to distract them and pose as a genuine article.

Extremely Strange..I thought this movie was extremely strange. I liked it though. I noticed some different things in there from the original movie. Some of the things I didn't like where the evil attacking squirrels. I thought that was extremely stupid. I prefer the Golden Geese from the first movie! The one thing I did love in this movie, was Johnny Depp. He had the coolest outfit (I loved the hat and gloves!), and the way he acted. He was just so strange. Overall, I really recommend this movie!

First off, Johnny Depp is probably one of the best actors alive today. His eccentric personality really livens up the character of Willy Wonka. Tim Burton, the amazing director of this movie and other favorites such as Edward Scissor Hands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Big Fish, did a great job in this movie adding his signature dark-humored view through the camera lens. The costume design and color scheme was beyond belief with its great pastels. Special effects were great, as well. Lastly, Danny Elfman wrote and produced a fantastical cacophony of a sound track.
The plot itslef was very similar to the origial movie. But I thought the character development of Willy Wonka and his father was an interesting side plot.
The actor who plays charlie is almost angelic. When he finds the last golden ticket, you almost want to cry. What a great moment.
Overall, this movie was outstanding! I will be watching it forever. It does not replace the original movie, but instead creates its own aproach to Rohal Dahl's book.

Call me old-fashioned but I thought the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was way better. Johnny Depp just puts on a weird performance. I thought the acting in this movie was awful. I say stick to the original.
