Carnivale - The Complete First Season (2004, DVD)

All the good shows that once dominated HBO are gone ladies and gentlemen. This was the crowning gem of them all. Forget the Sopranos! CARNAVALE had it all, sex, drama, violence, love; it was everything a viewer could hope for and more! What an amazing show! Thank god for the DVD format as early cancellation took this compelling plot driven masterpiece off the air, leaving a void in the HBO line up that only ROME could fill. And even that show was given an early grave due to production costs. It was certainly NOT for lack of viewers! What can I say? Shows like the Sopranos are cheap to produce as compared to the period piece that CARNAVALE was.
Rooted in the era of the Great Depression, the show followed a small time circus troop that traveled small town America in the 1920’s. Visually the show was stunning. It had a gritty genuine quality that really embodied the era. I will say this; the show was comprised of a lot of different elements: the show was supernatural in nature, but would go whole episodes without supernatural events rather it would focus on character development and the progression of the plot which included religious symbolism all leading up to an epic battle between the forces of good and evil. A remarkable show written by gutsy talented people. If HBO hadn’t been so quick to cut its loses and cancel this show so quickly maybe I wouldn’t have canceled HBO from my cable subscription.
CARNAVALE is an interesting show that would appeal to an intelligent audience. Do yourself a favor and pick up your copy of season one today!

I bid on the Carnivale Season 1 DVD set for 4 reasons. First the starting bid was reasonable, and much lower in price than other online retailers. Second the seller indicated it was viewed only once and that the case and DVD's were in very fine condition. Third the same seller was also offering the 2nd season of Carnivale. And fourth, although we had never seen this HBO offering, the reviews made the series look very interesting - and it is indeed a very intriguing show and one that we will keep and rewatch again and again!

On the same level with Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and Deadwood. Carnivale plus these preceding three are the best TV ever. Also liked Weeds and Dexter on Showtime.

I enjoyed watching the show on TV when it was on so I had to have DVD's for my collection. I don't think it's a show everyone would enjoy because it's set in the Depression era.

This show caught my attention right away and held through the whole season. Now I'm going to go looking for season 2.

To buy Usa-Region 1 Original Dvd Version on eBay for me was the only change to see on dvd This Amazing HBO's Series that i seen, in Italian, two years ago on Canal Jimmy's Sky TV.
Strange Destiny for Most Important TV Series After "Twin Peaks", that had Same Sort, conclused after the Second Season for audience's reasons.
HBO's dvd "Complete First Season" has an Exellent Audio-Video's Quality, but no much extra and documentaries without subtitles...
...but I think is an Unfailing Purchase, that would be present in every Keen on Cinema Collection.

this was a good series, i hate to see it go. oh well.i guess the producers at showtime know what we like better than we do. at least i have season one and season 2 to watch anytime i get a wild hair. i can always go back and vist the strange land.

Good stuff. Great show to watch. Very intriguing and intersting. Excellcent good vs evil show. Would recommend for anyone who likes films with wierd stuff in it.

This dvd of an older Hbo series is a must see!Interesting and different characters, Though the series was short lived it was packed with such powerful episodes,It is the first of two seasons let me tell you I will chase down to win the second season,As this dvd package was the best item that I have bought in years.I started out buying it to see what all the hype was about.I ended up falling in love with the characters,I am on the edge of my seat at the end of each episode again a must see series.

This movie has it all, very believeable, drama, suspense, sex, religion and more. Everything you could want for a series.

Strange world of off-beat characters in the dust bowl years. Real meets surreal in this world where no one is perfect and you suspect no one is as they seem. You pick up nuances in the little things at every look.

Had seen some of Carnivale the first season on HBO. Wanted to see the rest of it. Great series loved the plot and suspense.

It had me hooked the very first time I watched it.
Everyone in it did an amazing job.

This is a very compelling dark drama, involving the forces of good and evil. Set in depression era America in the dustbowl and California, a troupe of carnies and freaks wanders the midwest at the behest of the "Management", an unseen, mysterious leader, who knows all of the answers. The unknowing hero, Ben, is on a journey of self searching, while on the run from the law. His opposing force is on the same mission. In this addictive drama, the stage is set for the forces to collide. A must see for the unconventional. My only dissappointment is the fact that all six seasons were not made, I have to get my fill with two seasons. Get this one, and join the cult.

This series of stories was run on HBO in the early 2000's. It is a mystical fascinating saga of a travelling carnival that moves from town to town in the 1930's Dust Bowl Era. Brace yourself, and prepare to become stuck to your tv . I'm sure it will capture your attention, and entertain all who venture with the Carnivale.

I bought this set because I had only caught bits of the show when it aired and I was intrigued by what I saw. I enjoyed this series immenseley. The premise of the show is just weird enough to be continually entertaining and the plot line has enough surprises to keep it fresh. My big question is: why did they discontinue it?

The story line is great, the battle between good & evil...set in the depression. With a lot of mysterious powers for several characters. Neat to have a carnival setting. Enjoy the show!

If you actually enjoy programming of quality then this might be for you. A top-notch period piece, set during the dust-bowl era, with strong supernatural/mythological elements. It may be hard to follow at first, as it only reveals a little at a time, but worth the effort. If you enjoy shows like "Lost" or "Heroes" then this is worth a look.

One of the best television shows ever made. It's good on so many levels, you can just watch it and enjoy, or dig deeper and learn the entire mythology of the show.

The shipment took longer than I thought it would, but I guess their very busy. I would have liked to have had a better customer service experience when I contacted the dealer, but... I got my stuff and that's all that counts.

Carnivale only had two seasons and although the first season seemed a bit slow, it was entertaining. If you are a Nick Stahl fan, you get to see a bit more acting from him. Clea Duvall is such a pleasure to watch in this show. It really is too bad that it was cancelled because just as the season finale had both characters meeting (very Stephen King's The Stand!!!!) we get cut off. It was tough cuz' you wanted to see more and know more about what would happen next. Hopefully, it will air again maybe some other station will pick it up.

Also, both seasons were sent to me quickly and I was able to get my friend a perfect birthday gift!.

In my 40 years, no TV program has captured my interest like Carnivale. The characters are rich, complex, interesting, the sets and costumes, masterful (award winning, in fact). To say that Carnivale is about evil vs. good, is over simplifying it. The good guy's not all good; the bad guy's not all bad. And, all of the other characters have an interesting blend of good and bad and everything in between. The program makes the viewer reconsider assumptions about people, about what's important in life. And, it explores a period in history that's relatively untouched in the film world: the Depression lived by people in the southwest and california.

I saw the show on TV, but I couldn't wait to see what the DVDs were like. The quality is superb. Whilst I've not listened to all of the supplemental material, what I've seen and heard has, so far, interested me. It's well done, and worth the money.

If you like this, write HBO. Only 2 of the planned 6 seasons were aired. HBO needs to bring it back!
