Great CD if you like the blusey sound. I feel like she is singing directly to me. Like when you are in a small bar and everything seems more intimate. Highly recommend this CD.
Lucinda Williams has captured in song the essenece of pure rural country, She is the female "Tom Waits" of todays country music- No rhinestones , no silicon needed , Lucinda is worth a first listen because you will enjoy her cutting edge attitude forever . Few women can project and perform with true heart & soul with only a six string guitar and a place to sing- Baby you are a little on the "trashy" side ...and that is why I love ya' Baby... keep on singing your way...Lucinda Williams Rules !
This is my favorite Lucinda Williams cd. I respect her as a songwriter and love her singing - I listened to my first one so much that I finally wore it out and had to buy this one! There is not a bad song on this cd - she effortlessly goes from one subject to another and her phrasing and style are so unique that you are hooked!
Like the jingle jangle of the Rickenbacker? Like Steve Earle? The Twangtrust? Emmylou Harris? Buddy Miller? Jim Lauderdale? Then you probably already have this CD? If not, buy it. It's much more than the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album it received. Folk? Nah. In Twang We Trust.
I fell for Lucinda Williams when I heard her version of "Gentle On My Mind" and the end (credits) of Talladega Nights. I just had to have more of songs. CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD is a great CD, I love her singing, and writing. I would recommend it to anyone who likes good ole soft singing from a lovely woman.

Pros: Superb Americana Roots Rock.
Cons: Not one con at all.
When one thinks of American roots rock music, many names come to mind. Yet Lucinda Williams isn't one of them, at least in the eyes of mainstream music listeners. Which is a damn shame, because Ms. Williams is one of the most evocative and greatest songwriters America has ever produced. You see, Lucinda Williams is one artist that has been around the music scene for a long time, yet has been a nightmare for Record Company Execs and A

Pros: The death of cynicism.
Cons: This epinion does this record zero justice, although I tried.
Southern culture, with imagined memories of god-fearing salt of the earth people, has always been a mystery to this psuedo-sophisticated upstate NY boy. Sure, I d observed odd behavior at roadside exits off 95. Hotel owners and souvenir stands from Maryland through Georgia all had their charms, in a watered down lets please the Yankee tourist kinda way, but I never felt I truly understood. I tried grits and way too sweet iced tea, battled bugs the size of a baby s arm and bought fireworks. I spent time in West Virginia and mingled with shopkeepers, truck drivers and the landed gentry; always..

A Grammy winning classic

Pros: Lyrical power
Cons: Only 13 songs
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road won Lucinda Williams a Grammy for best Contemporary Folk album of 1998. I can t think of a recording that deserved accolades the way that this one does. My brother, who must have been afraid that I might die without hearing the 13 masterpieces contained within, gave me a copy of the CD, and it wasn t even my birthday. Possessing a unique voice and a masterful set of songwriting skills, Lucinda Williams tried (and succeeded) to avoid overproducing Car Wheels, despite using the better part of four years to complete this project. Less than two years after its initial..

Joy: Lost and Found

Pros: Bittersweet, beautiful alt-country folk
Cons: Not normally my favorite kind of music
My introduction to Lucinda Williams came from my dad playing "Passionate Kisses", "Changed the Locks" and a couple other older songs when I was younger. I noticed "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" on every single critic's best of 1998 list, and heard "Joy" on the radio, but Lucinda Williams didn't really come to the front of my head until I saw her open for the Allman Brothers at Great Woods last summer. It takes something pretty special to stir me out of my usual groove of listening to NIN, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, etc, and this was even more true last summer, before I became as interested in.

Pros: A Superior Set of Songs about Moving Along the Road
Cons: None
Take the gentle touch of Emmylou Harris, the spit and polish of Sheryl Crow, the thoughtfulness of Victoria Williams, the ache of Neil Young, the literate manner of Bob Dylan and the expert musicianship of Steve Earle and you'll have a sense of all the gifts that Lucinda Williams puts on display on the superlative Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. This album was years in the making, and the craft of it is obviously at a level far and above most of what passes for popular music nowadays. I've said this in many album reviews in this forum, but it's superior songwriting that separates a passable set..
