I love the book and my first graders do as well! The monkies are a huge hit. You can make it interactive which helps the students remember specific details.

  Caps for sale.
Review created: 05/03/06

I loved this book when I bought it for my children in the late 1970s, loved it as a preschool teacher in the 80's and 90's, and I still love it. It has charming full color pictures that are folk-tale simple and bold. The story has great rhythm that will keep the children repeating the phrases that the cap peddler says over and over. " caps for sale, " etc. The plot is simple and easy enough for the very young child to understand and will keep the interest at the same time. Lots of humor with the monkeys that steal the peddler's caps. Great large group story book that will have the children asking you to read the book again and again. The child who hears this story one time, will have no time "reading" this book on their own, over and over. This book has all the elements that are essential in a good picture book. Ideal for children ages 3-6, but other ages enjoy it as well. I would rate this as one of the top 50 books for children in the 3-5 year age group as picture books go, and this one is in my top favorite 20 of all time, in the same category as Wanda Gag, and Million of Cats class.

Caps for Sale: Some Monkey Business for Patiche's Memories Are Dear W/O
Review created: 04/08/03
by: modernmarvel -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
A cute story, fun monkey sounds

Cons:
None!

Caps for Sale, written and illustrated by Esphyr Slobodkina, is my entry in Patiche's Memories are Dear write-off. Patiche asked us to review one of our favorite childhood books. This is one I remember from childhood and read frequently to my own children - a two generation childhood favorite. My daughter loved this book in her preschool years and it is in frequent rotation on my son's request list now. I have it memorized and it is a personal favorite because a dramatic reading of the book requires monkey impressions which I have refined and polished over several years. It is too bad that...

Cons:

Caps for Sale is a book told and illustrated Esphyr Slobodkina. It was originally published in 1940. It is one I have read and re-read in preschool classes many times over. I have also read it to my own children who have also enjoyed it very much! The Story This story features a peddler who is trying to sell some caps. He wears all the caps on his head including his own checked cap plus a bunch of grey, brown, blue, and red caps on top of that that are for sale. He walk around town trying to sell the caps yelling, caps, caps for sale, fifty cents a cap. But, on this particular day, no one is..

Got some monkeys? Get this book!

Pros:
Interactive children's story, fun to read aloud, children loved it

Cons:
Tsz? Colors do not match well...

We have read this story a number of times since checking it out from the library. My daughter runs to get George, her Webkinz monkey, every single time as George likes this story very much! So yesterday when we were babysitting, I read it again out loud. This 4 year old little girl has very little attention span to listening to stories but did sit for this one. When the monkeys in the book say Tsz, tsz, tsz , E. said tsz tsz tsz too! I was very surprised as her speech can be hard to understand at times and I wonder if she understands us! She was really into it! Even though I thought tsz tsz..

The illustrations are very similar to one another

Caps for Sale, written and illustrated by Esphyr Slobodkina, is a classic book and is rated for ages 4-8. This book was first published in 1938. It is 40 pages long. I loved this book as a child. As an adult, I am still enjoying it while I read it to my 4 year old daughter. The Story There is a peddler who sells caps for 50 cents each.   I'd Buy A Cap!

Pros:
Simple, amusing

Cons:
watch out, you could get too attached

Two of the biggest disappointments in my teenage years have been a) Garfield was no longer funny. b) After purchasing a second copy of Caps For Sale at 12 years old in an instance of nostalgia, the classic just wasn't the entralling book it used to be...Well no wonder it says for ages 3 to 7 on the back! At an early age I was reading at a higher level than my peers. My mother always made sure that books were close by. Once Caps For Sale had been read to me over and over again, it was time for me to venture out on my own. I am proud to say that Caps For Sale is one of the first 'real' books I..
