One of DeNiro's best. I guess I like movies like this because it could really happen. Unlike, a lot of horror/drama movies they are often based on unrealistic events or circumstances. I guess the realism for me makes it shakingly disturbing.

A very riveting, edge of your seat movie. It makes you want to join in catching
the scrondal creating so much havoc on this family. It shows how easy a nieve young girl can be enticed and the end results of that innocence.
I recommend this for age group 15 and up

  NEVER IMPROVE ON A CLASSIC
Review created: 03/05/07

Although this movie boasts several new twists, blood, and a different finale, it still does not measure up to the 1962 original. Mick Nolte underplays his role and at times Robert DeNiro overplays his. The only balance in this film is Jessica Lange who gives her usual excellent performance. Stick with the original. Robert Mitchum makes a much more sinister Max Cady sans tatoos than DeNiro. Watch this one for Lange.

A creepy, updated version of the classic suspense film

This movie is absolutely terrifying, thanks to Robert DiNiro's outstanding performance as serial rapist Max Cady. When Cady is released from prison, he begins stalking Sam (public defender) and his family. DiNiro's performance as tattooed, cackling Cady is virtually unforgettable.

Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange give good performances as the parents of daughter Danielle, played by Juliette Lewis. The events that unfold surrounding Cady's stalking of Danielle are horrifying to watch and think about. Scorsese does an excellent job of directing this movie, as his choice of camera angles and decisions about what to allude to (rather than throw in your face) are tormenting to the viewer! There are some references to the original flick here, and Scorsese experiments with some film noir techniques. At times, the references seem too technical and overdone, but once the viewer realizes that it is all done on purpose, it all comes together. Don't watch this one alone; it is terrifying!

Pros:
this time, the color

Cons:
......

Unusual for me, I am going for the re-release instead of the original. The reason, for once, is color. Add Juliette Lewis, a psycho in her own right, and DeNiro, probably one of the most diverse actors around today, and you have sizzle and steam. I enjoyed the fact that Scorsese elected to bring Robert Mitchum back for this remake although he plays the part of the police chief instead of the perilously insane Max Cady, as well as Gregory Peck as the doddering attorney and Martin Balsam as the judge. Generally speaking I like the older versions of a movie but there was something about Mitchum..

CAPE FEAR is better than a bucket of poop! ...that's actually kind of disgusting, though.

Pros:
Incredible acting, great surreal visuals... the frickin' MOVIE!

Cons:
Not as visceral and psychological as the original.

Master filmmaker Martin Scorcese brings heart-pounding suspense to one of the most acclaimed thrillers of all time! Okay, actually, I just read that line off the back of the video box. But it IS true, you know. True, the original CAPE FEAR *already* had plenty of heart-pounding suspense, so it would be hard to *bring* heart-pounding suspense to a movie that already *has* it. (Like the asterisks? Nice touch?) In fact, I gotta say, the original CAPE FEAR (1962, Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck star, J. Lee Thompson directs. And all that off the top of my head. Boo-yah!) is one of my very...

Pros:
great cast, script, performances

Cons:
held down by genre conventions

What sounds like (and, in all fairness, is) nothing more than a routine stalker film about an ex-convict (Robert DeNiro) who goes after his old attorney (Nick Nolte), his wife (Jessica Lange), and his daughter (Juliette Lewis), is brought to a much higher level by the ingenuity of the direction and the performances of what has to be one of the most impressive ensembles of the nineties. There are certain things that you go in expecting in a movie like this. You want the tensions between the once perfectly stable family to rise. You want scenes where the villain ever so playfully teases his...

Pros:
Robert DeNiro, Scorcese's direction at times

Cons:
Bad, drawn-out ending, brief flashes of a better film

I've never liked the stalker, serial killer genre of film. Because no matter how well they build up the suspense, and no mater how creepy the villain is, it always ends with an over-the-top outburst from that villain and an ending that tries to outdo by force everything that has come before. However this is a serial killer movie by Martin Scorcese and Robert DeNiro. Is the result the same? Yes and no. Max Cady (Robert DeNiro) is an ex-con who comes back to haunt his lawyer (Nick Notle). Nolte buried evidence that could have freed him because he knew how he had raped his victim. So Cady comes..

  A Thrilling Classic
Review created: 12/29/00
by: Coopey -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
great acting, edge of your seat thrills

Cons:
long, drawn out ending

This is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. Scorcese has created a masterpiece that is both brilliantly acted and intense. When Max Cady (De Niro) is let out of jail, he makes it his mission to stalk the family of the lawyer, Sam (played by Nolte) who buried evidence that helped land the dangerous Cady in jail. While the viewer knows just how evil Cady is, Nolte's behavior to protect himself and his family and get Cady away from him is twisted so Nolte is seen as hunter and Cady the prey. De Niro is wonderful as the monster who spent years in jail aiming to become the perfect human..
