Canon SD800 IS - The Best of the Best

The best point and shoot digital camera in my opinion is the new SD800 from canon. Its 7.1 Megapixel quality and elegant stainless steel Perpetual Curve design is close to flawless. Canon optics are some of the highest quality in the world today. Many professionals shoot with Canon optics. The lens is a Wide-angle 28-105mm (35mm equivalent) 3.8x Optical Zoom with Optical Image Stabilizer Technology for steady, long zoom shooting. You may also notice there is a canon SD900 that is 10MP but has no Image Stabalization. Dont worry the 7.1MP SD800 with its "IS" Technology is far superior and will give you less blurry pictures. No need for 10MP when you can blow up to poster size prints with your 7.1MP canon SD800. It includes the DIGIC III Image Processor with Face Detection Technology for superior image quality, fast operation and low power consumption. Not that you have to know what that means but in short the SD800 has one of the best processors in the biz today. The SD800 has a 2.5" LCD that youll love for its clarity. Shoot better pictures in low lighting with its ISO 1600 capability and be blown away by its improved Movie Mode with Fast Frame Rate at 60 fps QVGA (320 x 240) or 30 fps VGA (640 x 480). The only thing that I dont like about this camera and canon cameras in general are their hard to navigate menus with small lettering or icons. Many other companies make it extremely easy to use their menu systems. Other than that its a perfect camera. Canon asks you to "come discover the new standard" and they are right on point. The Canon SD800 is by far the best camera in its price range.

The BEST camera I ever owned

What do you look for in a camera? Whatever that may be (flash, megapixel, style) the canon SD800 is the number one choice. In fact, it has more then the standard features of a digital camera. Here they are:

1) Wide Angle 28-105 mm 3.8 Optical Zoom - for crystal clear photos
2) Automatic Stabilization - a brand new feature. Allows you to take photos at blazing speeds. For example, if you take a picture while moving in a car.
3)7.1 Megapixel Quality - blow up picture up to 20'' x 32''.
4) Spacious 2.5'' Ultra Clear Screen
5) ISO 1600 - One of the first camera's with a flash that allows you to take photos at night or in low lighting.
6) Stylish - Stainless Steel Curve Design

This is not my first camera, I used to have a Sony. What a Diff! The Sony was much slower, bigger, and heavier. The flash and battery life are not even comparable. You will be more than grateful with the Canon SD 800 IS.

  Canon PowerShot SD800 IS
Review created: 07/03/08

This camera is great. I chose it over some of the more recent models because of the IS feature, which means I can take pictures in low light settings without flash. With digital cameras this is one of the largest problems, so to find one that fixed that, I jumped on it. I love the simple artistic settings like color swap and vivid colors. Navigation is simple and it can be learned within minutes of "exploring" the cameras functions. All in all, very worth the money.

SD800 Easy to use and take a great picture.

Well, I purchased this broken but found it easy to take apart and repair. I haven't had any pictures printed but the camera seems to take a great picture. Controls are easy to navigate through and are pretty much user friendly. The LCD screen is nice and large. I also like the fact that this camera also has the old style eye sights. The item sell for a fair price and feel you get a lot of camera for the money.

Canon SD800 IS Digital ELPH 7.1 Megapixel REVIEW
Review created: 04/10/08

Great camera. Stunning photo quality. I was upset at the video sound quality when played back, it doesn't sound well when recording in a loud area (nightclub, concert, etc). It's user friendliness can use a little more "friendliness".

  Canon SD 800IS
Review created: 03/11/08

The Canon SD 800IS is a top quality point and shoot digital camera. It out preforms the SD 850IS in my opinion which I have only used my friends SD 850IS a few times. The SD 750 or SD 1000 are great cameras but do not offer the image stabilizer (IS) to my knowledge. I highly recommend the Canon SD 800IS over any of the older model Canon's or even the newer ones. I own 2 Canon point and shoot digital cameras and 1 Sony point and shoot digital camera and the SD 800IS is my favorite based on different types of wildlife pictures I take. They are all convenient to have in a case and clipped to your belt or placed in your backpack to take to the woods or hiking and are very durable. But mostly the image stabilizer keeps your picture perfect everytime.

  pocket size digital camera
Review created: 03/04/08
by:

I purchased this camera to take on a vacation since my main digital camera was not pocket size. This camera was selected based on reviews of performance, zoom capabilities, wide angle (only one) capabilities and price. The camera was a jewel. Very few photos were out of focus due to movement, the stabilizing capability worked great. The photos were clear and crisp with good color. The wide angle gave me the ability to take better close up or interior photos because the lens captured more of the information. The telephoto aspect was wonderful. I took one distant shot of a waterfall which I could barely see and when I zoomed in the photo was as though I was standing in front of the falls. I purchased a leather case to carry the camera on my belt and it was no more visible than a cell phone. I also purchased an underwater case to use while viewing fish underwater. The camera worked like a charm. I took the camera in a helicopter ride in a craft which did not have doors. The photos were some of the most exciting I have ever taken. The purchase of two 2gig cards and extra batteries gave me the capabilities to take the over 400 photos on the trip with no downtime. I could not be more pleased with this reasonably priced pocket camera which takes photos as well as my large digital camera which costs four times as much.

  New Canon SD800 IS
Review created: 03/04/08

Great little camera. Just as described by many others. I especially like the wide-angle lens. I like a viewfinder which is why I chose this one over the newer SD870 IS but the LCD is very usable even in bright light. I am still studying the manual trying to figure out the many, many options available.

  Great camera- great features!
Review created: 02/17/08

I love this camera- my daughter bought one about 18 months ago & I have loved the quality of the pixs from it. It is the only camera by Canon at this price level that has a wide angle lense- on vacation last summer, we stood side by side taking pixs- hers had a much wider range. Great camera. A little heavy, but small- easy to place in a pocket to take with you everywhere!

  PowerShot SD800 IS
Review created: 02/15/08
by:

I was looking for a point and shoot camera that I could keep in my purse so that I would have it if I wanted it. I also own a Canon Digital Rebel XT, which is an awesome camera in itself, but it is also kind of bulky at times. I am a Canon lover and was originally looking at the SD700. When I looked that version up there was a banner add for the SD800 which emphasized Image Stabilization. That was the one I wanted! The camera is awesome - 7.1 megapixal and 3.8 optical zoom. It takes great pictures, is small in size and I carry it with me all the time. I would definitely recommend the SD800 for it's size, portability and results. The only con that I can think of is that the on/off button is small.

  Just what I would expect...
Review created: 02/10/08

I have had several Canon PowerShot cameras and I am always happy with them. Seems like I lose them a lot though, as that is why I always buy a new one. This camera does great video, great pictures, and is easy to use. The only down side is it is nothing special, not particularly better for normal use than the previous PowerShots I have owned. Still happy as always, though!

BEST POINT AND SHOOT U CAN BUY
Review created: 02/08/08(updated 02/08/08)
by:

I own six cameras (Canon (2), Nikon, Olympus, Panasomic, & Sony - point and shoot to a $1500 SLR) and this little camera is my FAVORITE. Heres why--
PRO: Its manual mode features rival my pricey SLR (vivid, ISO, etc.). In auto mode it is the BEST P&S camera by far! I owned an SD700 which I gave to my daughter (I guess that makes 7) before I bought the SD800. What I really like about the 800 is the wide-angle (28mm vs.35mm)capability. However, you do give up slight zoom capability (3.8X zoom vs.4.0 on the 700). The camera is shirt-pocket small and for most travel photography the enhanced wide-angle is a real plus since you're often too close to large shots and the 3.8 tele is far better than other cameras its size. (For travel, I also carry my Panasonic TZ which although a bit larger has a 10X optical zoom for animal/people shots.) The stabilization and selectable focus aspects of this camera are far superior to anything in its class or price-range. In fact most point-and-shoot users will just use this camera in AUTO mode and never utilize its broad capabilities. Although missing on most new P&S cameras, the 800, like the 700, has a viewfinder in addition to the screen-- this is important in varying light conditions and if you're conserving battery time.

CON: I don't particularly like the small mode select button-- it's just kinda dorky. And compared to my expensive NIKON some shots are a bit soft around the edges (most people would never notice). The manual is very inclusive which means complex to many-- For some great and straightforward tips on using this camera more effectively I suggest you go to: www.kenrockwell.com/canon/sd800.html

This is a great, camera, of course I've had cannon cameras before reason why i purchased it because i knew it was going to be good, and i was surely not disappointed, if you are considering some other cheap camera because it is cheap and it has 10 12 mega pixels, do some research and don't waste your time, go for 4-8 mega pixel cameras anything more is just a waste.

SD800is SD 800 is by Canon - In incredible camera!
Review created: 02/01/08
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is the best price point for major features (Face detect, Image Stable, Wide Angle, 4X Zoom). An awesome camera. Recommend to get with the PSC-55 leather case (fits it snug and protects it).

Don't spend extra on huge LCD (this ony is bright, crisp, packed with pixels)

Wideangle shooting mode - goes beyond 35mm equiv to get to a little wider shot

Awesome PlayBack Feature... must be a mini gyroscope inside because when you turn the camera, your vertically shot images auto-rotate to fill the screen! This is a truly neat feature!

  Great Little Camera
Review created: 01/02/08
by:

This camera has all the functionality you could want. It takes great pictures and is easy to use. The only complaint I have is in the design. The rotating selector is kind of akward to use. I've gotten used to it, but it still is annnoying once in a while. I'm a girl with little fingers and fingernails, a guy with fat fingers would probably find it awkward. The selector on the SD 700 was much better. It's a minor glitch though. I love Canons and will stick with their line, I got this one over the SD 750 because its still has an optical view finder, a dying breed in digital cameras these days. The camera does a great job of capturing the pic before the flash makes me blink, a total bonus because with other cheaper cameras, I am usually snapped with my eyes shut.

  Good but not excellent
Review created: 12/17/07
by:
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After a thorough survey, I chose SD800 IS. It works OK for general purpose. It takes good videos pictures.

After about one month use, I found at least two things that I can not be satisfied with:

1. It will not take pictures on objects in moving. This is terrible for people who want to take pictures of kids or animals. A slight movement will make the picture blurred. I used to have an old Canon digital camera with only 3.2 MP. When set to the Moving Mode, it captured very good pictures moving objects. This feature is lost from this new camera.

The IS will never work on this problem!!

2. Extra noise in the video.
