Avoid blurry pics indoors with IS. Only Elph w/4X zoom.

We bought this camera a few weeks ago as our third Canon Elph (most recent was a S400) and we're quite impressed. In looking for a new camera here was our criteria:

1. Be simple to use. I've owned too many devices that are just too much work to use and I want to enjoy using my camera.
2. Take great indoor pictures. At least half the time we use our camera is at parties so no washed out (too much flash) pictures for us.
3. Use standard memory. We like to be able to share memory cards with our friends so today that means you need SD memory (no Sony MemorySticks).
4. Take pictures quickly. I hate waiting for cameras to turn on and focus--do it fast or forget about it.
5. Be portable. For me that means it must fit in my wife's purse or it's not going to go very many places.

The Canon SD700 in my opinion fits all the above better than any other camera on the market. As an avid Canon camera owner I know that they make some of the most easy to use cameras on the market and this upgraded camera would come with some of the same familiar controls from our loved S400. Notabley the Image Stablization (same technology available for years in camcorders) has made it into this model--which is great considering its often hard to hold such a small camera steady. The technology allows us to take pictures at parties indoors often without using the flash letting the natural light into the picture. The camera while slightly thicker than the SD450 is still small enough for a purse or jeans plus you get the 4X zoom and IS.

A few unexpected bonuses of the SD700:
* Records videos at 640x480 (30fps).
* Battery life lasts all weekend long.
* Special modes for taking pictures of Fireworks, the Beach, and Cloudy days.
* A beautiful fade effect between pictures while in slideshow mode.
* Fast power on, first picture, and quick scrolling thru slideshow pics.

You won't be disappointed by the SD700. For a deal look for the Japanese (IXY 800) or the European (IXUS 800) models. I bought the IXY 800 as it is the identical camera to the US version (runs in English + English manual).

UPDATE: In October 2006, Canon introduced the SD800 which adds a 7.1 megapixel CCD and an updated DIGIC III Image Processor with Face Detection Technology. I haven't tried out the new model but it might be worth considering.

  Canon SD700 SI Camera

This camera was purchased in anticipation of a 3 week trip to London, Rome, Greece and Turkey. It replaces a more bulky Sony 3 Mega Pixel. I only had about 3 weeks to learn to use the camera before we left. No problem! Very easy to use and takes great pictures. It's small size and large screen make it ideal for trips. It easily fit in my cargo pants pocket or purse. Two of my friends have already bought the same camera after seeing and using mine. To protect the camera I put a clear vinyl film on the screen and keep it covered with a tennis wrist band. This makes it very easy to carry in my purse without scratches or damage. The 4x Optical zoom and image stabilizer were attractive features for me. I am more concerned about zoom rather than pixels. The 6 mp of this camera gives me the ability to take 2272 x 1704 pictures, which can be edited easily without losing quality. Plus if I need more resolution I can move it up. I have found that to force the fill flash (needed when the subject is in front of a window or bright light) this camera has to be set on manual instead of auto. That's fine--just set the manual with all the auto settings and set the flash to 'on'. I take all my pictures on Manual rather than auto. The low light capability is great on this camera--just raise the ISO to 800 and snap. Best to use a tripod or something to steady the camera though. The original battery in this camera has an excellent life. I bought two extra batteries online which are not Canon--and was very disappointed in their life. So I will now spend the extra money and buy another Canon battery for this camera (only $39). I like to have an extra, charged battery with me when traveling in case it is not convenient to recharge in the middle of the day. If you are used to a lower mega pixel camera, know that you will probably need a larger memory card than before. I purchased a 1 Gigabyte card and am glad I did. Before I had used a 512 MB card which I had found perfectly adequate. It wouldn't be with this 6 MP camera.

As far as set up of the camera, I really like several of the features. One you can set the time to local or world time. While in Europe I set for World time and easily changed the time zones as we crossed them. This and having the camera put pictures in daily folders made it easy to identify the pictures and organize them on my home computer.

The only drawbacks to the camera are minor and easily worked with. The smaller the camera, the harder it is to hold it steady. Cameras with a little more weight and mass are easier to hold still. And higher optical zoom will result in blurred pictures if the camera doesn't have image stabilizer. Even though the SD700 has IS, it is harder to get a really sharp picture when the zoom is fully extended. But these issues are the nature of small size (which I wanted) and higher zoom (which I also wanted). I wish the SD700 had a battery meter showing how much battery was left at any given time. Instead, when the battery is low, a flashing icon appears, but by that time it's too late if you are out sightseeing. Hence the need for an extra battery.

I researched and shopped hard for this new camera. I was happy with my 4 year old Sony and wanted a new smaller camera with many of the same features while taking just as good of pictures. I found that in the Canon SD700 IS. I'm very happy with it and will recommend it to friends.

  Best Little camera ever!
Review created: 07/03/08
by:

I started out with an SD600 camera and I loved the photo quality. I didn't have anything bad to say about the camera. Then one sunny day, I was filming my Nitro R/C trucks and the tripod it was sitting on fell to the ground. The lens broke and the camera was dead. I didn't worry, I would just have to get another one and be more careful next time...

Canon SD700... After some research, I decided to go with the SD700. It had a stronger zoom and an optical image stabilizer. The picture quality was as beautiful as the SD600, so the reviewers said. I also found out about CHDK for this model. It is a program where you can open ALL of the features for this tiny powerhouse! I knew I would get a good price on one on Ebay, then I found it. After what seemed like an eternity (Actually only a few days), my camera arrived. It was everything I expected it to be and more. This camera takes awesome pictures! Once I uploaded the firmware, I was astonished. This little camera can take high speed (1/50,000) photos, save RAW files, optically zoom while recording, take a picture with a 65 second exposure and TONS of other useful and cool things! This camera hasn't let me down at all! I love the spot metering and center focusing options. It has a long battery life, an excellent LCD, and an optical view finder. It also has alot of cool modes, most of which are very useful. I would buy this camera again and again and again if I had to. I pray to God I won't have to ;)

I needed a new camera for work. This one appealed to me because it used a Lithium battery as opposed to the rechargeable ni-cad batteries with my older camera. It seemed that my camera was eating batteries or the batteries would never stayed charged. It is lightweight and has more options for use. I liked the ability to take a variety of shots and setting the camera for those options was easy. I would never buy anything but a Canon again!

  Great Camera

We bought the SD700 for our younger daughter who just loved the camera and its capabilities. In fact, our older daughter who became jelious of the well the camera worked the high quality pictures she was able to take with the camera. Well we just had to get another one for our older daughter. Great camera, nice zoom, great screen size, recharable battery, and the picture stablization can't be beat. If your looking for a really nice affordable camera you can't go wrong with the SD700.

  Great product, great price

Exactly what I wanted, shipped timely, and with all the "extra" things that were advertised. I decided to buy this particular product because the price was much less than I had seen elsewhere and the seller's reputation was excellent. If I had it to all over again, I would not change a thing about what I bought and how I bought it.

Efficient and honest. Believe camera was sold w/ 256K memory card that wasn't included in resale. If I am wrong I will retract comment. Either way, would buy again.

I ended up not buying this as this was only the manuals and not the actual camera. I originally bid on this thinking that it was the camera and found that it was not the actual camera. I contacted the seller after the auction to let him know that I wanted the camera and not only the manuals. We agreed on the fact that he will go ahead and take me of the auction and sell it to the next highest bidder.

  Great camera - weak flash
Review created: 09/02/07
by:

This is a great camera!!
Pros:
1. Real time optical viewfinder (zooms with lens)- this is important in two ways. First it allows you to turn off the power-robbing LCD which triples the battery life. Secondly, SLR users like myself are not comfortable composing a shot on a tv screen. I am just to used to seeing as the camera sees to use the LCD. Plus the viewfinder never washes out in bright sunlight.
2. The size is unbelievable. I bought a belt case for it and take it everywhere. If it is noticed, it is mistaken for a horizontal cell phone case.
3. The image stabilization is the greatest feature of all. I almost gave up on my hobby of photography as my hands now shake, but Canon Technology saved the day and I can again take pictures.
Cons:
1. Weak flash - this was corrected by the addition of a Vivitar DF120 that fits into my pocket when I need a flash.
2. Power button - is small
3. zoom speed - just a little too fast causing over-zooming - you have to learn to anticipate its stopping point and release accordingly

Review of Cannon Power Shot SD 700 Digital Camera
Review created: 08/05/07
by:

This is the most flexible camera I've had and more optional features than I'll use. The set up and use was simple and quick. The resulting pictures are excellent. I would recommend this camera for all around use. The seller provided additional accessories which are useful and amount to a good deal of value.

Excellent camera - Great for impatient people!
Review created: 07/14/07
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I spent 2 months testing, reading reviews, and watching videos (thanks CNet!)to find the best camera for my needs. I'm very happy with my purchase of the Canon SD700 IS.
I looked at Kodak, Fuji, and Sony's offerings before deciding on the Canon. I have had several Sony digitals in the past, and they've held up well. I was discouraged with the newer Sonys, though, as they felt flimsy and plastic- not to mention light. I like a camera with a bit of weight to it-it just feels better in the hand to me.

Most major-brand cameras take decent pics, and seldom do I require a full 6mp for my shots. That being said, here's what I required:
Crisp & clear pics that didn't need much post-edit, long battery life, compact design, and most importantly- a fast response time from power-on to first picture, and fast time between shots. Growing up with 35mm, I hate the unnatural lag between pics that's so common in digitals.

The Sd700IS outperformed all the other cameras I tested in these areas.
PROS: Fast response time, great picture & movie quality, Image stabilization feature, long battery life, easy-to-learn/use menus.
Cons: Proprietary battery (I'd prefer AAs or AAAs for easy replacement on the road), Slippery case (hold on tight or use the wrist strap!), expensive underwater case ($175).
OVERALL: Don't be concerned that it's called an ELPH. If you recall, the first ELPHs used Advantix film- what a joke. This is a well-made, super compact, super-cool digital with a big screen. I give it a 4.5 out of 5.

Pros:
4x zoom range
Fast focus
Image stabilization
build qualitymacro mode
Large screen
optical viewfinder
Good quality movie mode

Cons:
AiAF is not good
ISO 800 is not useful

Overall this is nice point and shoot. The Image Stabilization is great for indoor and low-light situations. This camera is not for control freaks, look to Canon's PowerShot series or a DSLR, but if you just are looking for good looking snapshots with little effort, this is a good pick.

  AWESOME CAMERA
Review created: 07/04/07
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Awesome Camera for the price. Actually I bought this camera to use underwater. A friend had one with underwater housing and was taking Scuba pictures as good as others with $3,000 camera set-ups. The Camera does have underwater settings and with the anti-shake technology and Scuba Settings, the underwater pics are unbeleivable for a reasonably priced camera. Of course you have to buy an underwater housing, but those only run in the $170-$250 range, which is cheap compared to others. In addition this camera takes great land pictures, I love being able to zoom and still get really sharp pics. Also the large LCD is great. I am still learning how to use it but this camera does so many things that it is a true bargain for the price.

The camera is everything that I expect from a camera. It'll help make memories last forever. It takes great pictures, and i've definitely recommended it to others. The only thing is, I wish there was additional warnings prior to the battery dying, prior to "change battery". But, with two batteries, I feel always prepared. :)

I wanted to upgrade my camera, so I did some research on what was available. The Canon PowerShot SD700 was highly rated for it's picture quality and ease of use. I found it on Ebay at a good price, so I got it. I love it! It is compact, easy to use, and it takes excellent pictures. It also provides me with options to customize and edit my pictures while taking me to the next step in my photography.
