Exceptional Digital Camera – Canon Does it Again!
Review created: 09/22/05
172 of 191 people found this review helpful.

I’m an avid photographer with a full digital SLR outfit and a broad array of lenses. However, when it comes time to toss a digital camera in my pocket as opposed to slogging 3 pounds of photo equipment around my neck, I always go with the Canon SD family of cameras. I recently upgraded to the SD400 am very happy with my decision.

I demand high quality directly from the camera to limit any post-processing (e.g., color adjustment, sharpening, etc.). The Canon SD400 hits a home run due to the awesome photo resolution (meaning you have the ability to enlarge prints while minimizing image degradation), rich color saturation, and a powerful flash which effectively balances lighting.

The S400 is also compact and convenient. After all, shouldn’t a pocket camera fit in your pocket? This camera is light and slim, yet quite sturdy due to the solid metal casing. The LCD screen is also large and very bright when compared to early generation Canon SDs and competing models (with the exception selected Casio and Sony models). One note of caution – the LCD is fragile, so be careful!

Finally, other great features include long battery life, USB 2.0 for faster downloads (assuming you can support 2.0), and a nifty little movie capture feature for you MPEG fans. Also, consistent with Canon’s reputation, you get great documentation and a quick start guide.

OK, now for the stuff that could be better. Remember how I mentioned that LCD screen was fragile? Well, so is the rest of the camera. Don’t buy this camera without a case – you’ll want to keep it well protected when not in use. Dropping the camera is not an option, so stay clear of taking photos while hanging upside down on a roller coaster or when you’re skydiving. Additionally, the memory card that comes with the camera is a joke – it barely holds a dozen pictures. At a minimum, pick up a couple of 256MB cards or a 512MB card and you’ll be just fine.

The perfect complement to an SLR

Let's face it -- a camera is only as useful as your ability to carry it around. Cost aside, everyone would love to have a gazillion-megapixel SLR with 12 different lenses set on a large, solid tripod and remote-triggered, fully-umbrella'd flashes strategically positioned around your subject. But ultimately, if you can't take the set up with you, your gear just sits at home and silently depreciates ...

I call my SD400 the "camera for real life." It's very small and is great for taking snapshots -- the impromptu moments between the weddings and birthdays. I keep it in my notebook bag and will pull it out when heading out for the evening, when carrying my SLR and a couple of lenses are not socially acceptable. The camera has just enough features to make taking photos easy but it doesn't sacrifice on the quality. The predecessors of the SD line, the Canon S300, S410, and S500 cameras, are widely-accepted as having better photo quality. But at nearly half the thickness, the SD400 won me over.

The SD300 and the SD500 should also be considered, but I settled on the '400. The 500's 7 megapixels are nice, but the optics don't do all those pixels justice, and the body is thicker than the SD400. The SD300 shares the same body as the SD400 and is thus just as compact, but the cost of the extra megapixels will be fully recouped in resale value.

There are thinner, smaller cameras, but they are typically more expensive and do not produce the same kind of photo quality. Sony has released some terrific cameras, but the optics mechanism means that the photo quality just isn't going to be as good. Stick with Canons ... I did, and this is my fifth Canon camera.

  POWERSHOT IS THE BEST

I love this Camera, and I've had it for years. I originally bought it so that i can take pictures of the many things i sell on ebay, but I use this everywhere. Its a magnificent device that I use to capture the essence of life, I've taken so many great photos with this, whether it be of something to sell or something aesthetic or my adorable little girl, this camera does everyone justice, ive taken pictures of people who say they're not photogenic, and they'll use this photo as their profile pic cause its that good, and it captures things exactly how i see it.

Never received the item. Seller returned the money. Seller submitted information that showed UPS would pick up the item but this information was never updated. After a week I wrote to the seller to find out what happened. He said he would get back to me the next day. A whole week passed without response. 8/27/08 I filed a claim and he returned the money.

I'm able to take good quality pictures. I bought this camera at a very reasonable price. It's perfect for carrying in a pocket. My only complaint is that I had to buy separately a memory card and other devices although I knew what I was paying for.

Actually a good quality camera, just dont drop it. The LCD liquid crystal display is quite fragile and has a tendency to crack if dropped.

I like the camera very much. I really appreciated how quickly the shipment was made. The camera didn't come with a USB cord. It would have been helpful if that had been mentioned specifically in the description. Also, the lens cover has already gotten stuck once, and I hope that isn't a recurring problem. Otherwise, I'm completely satisfied!

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete the 1 offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). The best offer to do is STAMPS.com. Its free, all you need to do is register and follow the instructions. And you’re on your way to your free prize for just completing this offer!

There are plenty of cool offers to choose from such as Blockbuster online, Stamp.com, Netflix, Gamefly which are services you would regularly sign up for anyways and their all secure networks, why not use them to get a free PS3, flat screen TV, iPHONE, ipod or cash (I did the Stamps.com for a 4 week free trial and it is free! I don’t have to do anything with it). Look at the offers and choose the one that works for you. After signing up and completing your one offer, simply refer 5-14 people or friends (depending on the FREE prize you choose) to do the same under your link (just post the same thing as I have on eBay or any other message board, and you'll get your referrals before the auction even ends.)

Then they will ship your selected item for free. No Joke, 100% REAL!!! The reason these companies make money, is because most people don't bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on EBAY! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth which saves them tons of money which goes toward yours and my free gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Gamefly etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after your orders placed.

  Wonderful point/shoot

I have had the SD400 for three years now and I absolutely love the camera!
A lot of people, mostly amateurs, think that it takes a larger megapixel camera to take good pictures. This is not the case. Canons are reliable cameras but this one in particular is a great point and shoot.
There are multiple different settings including automatic settings for those not familiar with manually setting, color transfers, and of course b&w...etc. The camera also has a wonderful macro lens that works well with flowers and abstract shots.
I personally have taken some beautiful photographs which a few have been sold as prints (check out http://mihui.deviantart.com/).
If you are looking for an easy to use camera for home, traveling, or even just hanging out with the family and friends this camera is the one for you. The best part is it is not ridiculously priced!
Whatever camera you choose, happy shooting!

A decent camera from Canon, slightly outdated

Very good basic point and shoot from Canon. Small, yet study design, has never broken on me. Some what out dated now, but still a good basic camera. Automatic settings (ISO and WB) make good judgments. Go Canon!

  Wonderful Shirt Pocket Sized Camera

Hi, I'm a pretty discriminating image maker who purchased this camera on behalf of a friend and upon it's arrival I tested it fairly thoroughly for functionality and quality. I was 100% satisfied with it's capabilities and quite impressed with it's image quality. It is almost exactly the size of a deck of cards when turned off - quite impressive. Personally, my hands are quite large and routine use of this camera for all image making would be bothersome, but I'd DEFINITELY carry one for grab shots and for when a bigger camera just takes up to much space.

I absolutely love this camera. I've had 2 more recent models of the same camera, but for everyday use, I prefer this one. The pics don't take up too much space on the hard drive, yet they are as clear as can be. Plus, the design of the camera is so sleek. I love it!!

  SD400 still a good deal

When the LCD screen stopped working on my Cannon SD400, I asked myself---do you want to spend $$$ to have it fixed, or buy another. So I bought another SD400 on EBay, guaranteed, for much less than I had paid for a new one 2 or 3 years ago.

Was it a good move??? Yes, because I got some extra perks--- a tripod, another battery and good memory stick. The camera is in perfect condition and for my use I don't need more than 5 megapixels. I love the convenience of carrying this small elph camera, because I ride a bike and don't want all of that heavy, bulky stuff. I can put it in my biking shirt back pocket or put it in the trunk carrier for easy access.

It is a good idea to keep the camera in a small, light pack to help avoid the LCD failure again.

  Buying used

I liked the avaialability of what I was looking for right away. I was looking to buy another camera the same type as the one I had that passed away. I had about $400 of accessories and did not want to have to repurchase all of them with a newer model camera. I found a used one at a decent price.
BUYER BEWARE!! the camera I bought worked well for about 2 weeks then the used battery died ($40 for another one) and the camera started to have the same problem that my original camera died from. For only about $30 or $40 more I could have gotten a REFURBISHED and had a warranty and now the seller says that the camera was in perefect condition and I am out of luck. BUY NEW!!!! The bottom line is I spent $200 to use this camera 5 times and now I have to start shopping again.

Canon Powershot SD400 Digital ELPH 5.0 MegaPixel
Review created: 04/03/07

It is better than any digital camera out there for the money. Besides, who actually needs more than 5 megapixels anyway? Only if you are planning on printing posters i suppose. Also here is a secret, the SD400(and maybe sd450?) is the only canon camera besides the really expensive ones to have the color filter in it. Its the best feature, you can make everything black and white except for one color you choose OR you can make something that was originally one color look like another(ie. someone wearing a blue shirt will look in the picture like they are wearing any other color you want like yellow). This camera is awesome

I got this camera because I had the same one that got stolen in December. But this camera is incredibly user friendly. It has good image quality and works seamlessly with my Mac laptop. Also, I love the various settings. If you are an amateur photographer and don't want to put down too much money on a camera and you would like an incredibly compact camera, this is the perfect device. I love this baby!
