This camera is a good all-around performer as far as sub-compact cameras go and, like most Canon cameras, is fairly easy to use. It is a popular model, though it will eventually be phased out in favor of image stabilized models, which have better low light performance.

Strengths:
- Small size (0.7"/2cm thick!)
- Good image quality for a camera this size
- Takes several different qualities of video
- Offers shooting at 1600 ISO (lets you shoot in darker settings)
- Large view screen (given the size of the camera)
- Good macro capabilities (focuses down to 5cm)

Weaknesses:
- No image stabilization
- No manual aperture and shutter control
- The flash is very weak.
- Like most sub-compact cameras, this one will give you problems with red-eye for flash portraits.
- As is the case for most ultra-compact cameras, you'll be able to get better image quality in larger cheaper cameras solely due to the optical and sensor compromises inherent in making a camera this small.

It competes against the Nikon Coolpix S50, S50c, S200, and S500, the Fuji F40, and the Casio Exilim EX-Z75, among others. Feature sets are generally the same on most cameras. If you want an image stabilized ultra-compact (if you can afford it, I would advise it), look to the Canon SD850 or SD870 IS (slightly larger than this camera at 1" thick).

I rate this camera a "4" because it is a good camera - It has a reasonable feature set, but it still has its drawbacks. If you can handle a camera 1" thicker, do yourself a favor and get the Canon A570 IS for about the same money and you'll get image stabilization and better image quality. If you need the small size, though, this camera is good and is about as good as you'll get in the price range.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 DIGITAL ELPH 7.1 Megapixel

The PowerShot SD1000 is a powerful compact camera with a 7.1 million pixel sensor. More than capable of superior-quality prints at sizes even larger than 13 x 19, the PowerShot SD1000 is great for almost any situation. The small size and high image quality make the PowerShot SD1000 an amazing little package.

To make the SD1000 as user friendly as possible, not only is it incredibly
compact but also utilizes a 2.5-inch LCD screen. This high-
resolution LCD monitor (230,000 pixels) is great because of its large size and incredibly fine detail, but is also viewable even at extreme angles to make previously difficult shooting situations, a “snap”.

Expanded ISO range includes ISO 1600 to better reduce camera shake/camera blur in lower light situations. Also a new auto setting, High ISO Auto, allows the camera to set ISOs up to 1600, if the conditions demand
it, without having to select the ISO manually. These new features make it much easier to get perfect pictures even in darker situations.

The PowerShot SD1000 is made of high class stainless steel, which offers both durability and an attractive look. It has been specifically
designed to have a squared-off look giving it a stylish, and thin profile, but still offer the comfort and ease of use expected of a Canon PowerShot. Also, to make the SD1000 as steamline as posible all of the controls a flush with the camera’s surface. It will be available in two different styles; silver with black accents, and all silver.

In order to make your picture taking experience the best that it could be, the shooting modes on the SD1000 have been re-organized. At the touch of a button you have access to all the standard shooting modes; Auto, Camera Manual, Digital Macro, Portrait, Night Snapshot, Color Accent, Color Swap, Stitch Assist, and Movie. You also can access the Special Scene modes; Kids & Pets, Indoors, Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Aquarium, and Underwater.

NUMBER 1 THING IN MY PURSE
Review created: 10/09/08

I LOVE THE SD1000 BECAUSE THE SIZE, SHAPE IS MADE TO FIT IN JEANS' POCKETS, SHIRT POCKETS AND PURSE'S INSIDE POCKET. I BOUGHT MY FIRST SD1000 WITH MY FIRST PAYCHECK BUT IT GOT STOLEN. BUT I BOUGHT 1 AGAIN [A BLACK ONE THIS TIME] A MONTH AFTER. AND I BOUGHT A SILVER ONE AGAIN. MY FAVORITE FEATURE IS THE COLOR SWAP. WHERE IT TRANSFORMS A COLOR INTO OTHER COLOR. IT IS LIKE A PHOTOSHOP. IT HAS A LOT OF SHOOTING MODES. ITS DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE TOY...

Strengths: big lcd, great quality pics, user-friendly, love the thumbnails option, and the battery lasts longer than my last (1 hour vs 30 minutes)
Weaknesses: none found yet
Summary: I love the Canon Powershot series and they just get better and better, more and more affordable. The SD1000, digital elph has not disappointed. This one has improved viewing features, a big lcd screen, and the battery lasts about an hour.

  Canon POwershot SD1000
Review created: 10/06/08

I've had this camera for over a year, previously purchased another for a friend, and know of two others with the same camera. They love it, I love it so decided to purchase one for another gift.

Camera is easy to use, has a fantastic macro setting, and has an excellent little video setting.

  Easy to use, inexpensive
Review created: 10/06/08

This is a great inexpensive camera. I bought my first one two years ago and used it all over HI and Europe. Very durable, dependable. I lost it at an airport earlier this year and went out and got another one just like it. Very quick refresh time which is great when you are shooting action shoots. Underwater (with underwater case of course) is crystal clear and the zoom is amazing.

  Great Camera, But Outdated
Review created: 10/05/08

yazzeh ( 8 )

The Canon PowerShot SD1000 is an excellent camera, but it has become outdated. The reason I bought it was for the 60 fps movie shooting mode, since I'll be using it a lot for sports events I host, and for some reason, Canon dropped it from their new model, the SD1100. All in all, the camera is good, and for the prices you can find it for now, it's even better.

It is a great all around camera. With the zoom capabilities I'm able to get those shots of architectural details that normally I wouldn't. The higher pixel rating allows me to increase the picture in size and still maintain the sharp resolution.

  Love this camera

I love this camera. It fits in my pocket and in my (small) purse. The battery stays charged for a long time. It takes very good pictures. It has a view-finder and a screen. The menu seems complicated, so I just leave it at one setting, which works well for me.

  Where's the Neck Cable?
Review created: 08/30/08
by:
629am ( 88)

I own the original ELPH so I expected the Digital ELPH to be just as good with digital convenience. It is just as good with 7.1 megapixel pictures, a small size, rechargeable lithium ion battery, and a 2 gigabyte SD card, which is compatible with the Wii.

However, it's missing the all important accessory: the neck cable! It's a strong, shiny metal cable that lets you wear the camera around your neck and show off its small, sleek design. Instead it comes with a wimpy, black, cloth wristband. It's also missing a leather carrying case. One more gripe I have is the pictures come out blurry if your hands are shaky, whereas the original ELPH didn't have that problem.

Canon SD1000 Point and Shoot Digital Camera
Review created: 08/27/08
by:
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Excellent point and shoot. Extremely compact for quick travel and very convenient for quick power-on and shooting. Variable ISO gives good shooting variety and the optical/digital zoom is far more powerful than the small form factor of the camera would lead the user to believe. All in all, a very good beginning camera for the digital photographer who needs a lot in a small and cheap package.

I love the size. It will fit in my pocket. I do not fancy myself a photographer and this camera makes up for everything I do not understand about photography! I do not have a problem w/"red eye". If I did ,think my computer would repair the problem. Really enjoy the volume of pics that can be stored on one memory card. No film to buy and change in camera. Very handy and not ostentatious at all.

Item identification not quite what it seemed to be.
Review created: 08/03/08
by:

When purchasing this item, it seemed like a great price, but when receiving the item, it turned out to be a refurbished model, which was never specified in the original description. If it was specified as a refurb, it certainly was hidden quite well, as this was a surprise to us when the item arrived. Other than that, the item seems to be in working condition. Generally, we are pleased with the purchase, other than the seeming "bait and switch" that went on.

I can't afford an Digital SLR camera right now... and I love tinkering.

With CHDK installed on my SD Card, there isn't anything I can't do with this camera. I've been playing with it for more than a month now. And I still don't know everything this camera is capable of...

HDR Images look fantastic! Seriously, this has been one of my favorite purchases of my life!!

Review created: 07/06/08

This is a great camera in a really compact design. Not only does it take great pictures, the software does an excellent job of making sure even the most novice photographer takes an outstanding shot. Canon's face recognition software makes sure the camera is focusing on the subject's face. Pictures are also processed very rapidly so that there is a minimum of time waiting for the computer to respond to your shutter press. There are loads of settings that allow more seasoned photographers some creativity, but the general setting affords even my 7 year old the abililty to take great pictures.

All in all, this is one great compact camera.

This a excellent camera for those who want to make some adjustments to "point and shoot" but are not interested moving up from the "point and shoot" to higher functioning DSLRs. It is small and box shaped fits well into a pocket which I enjoy.
