Great options, but know what you're getting

I love Canon cameras -- I've owned 5 of them. So when someone asks me for a camera recommendation, I like to assess what they're looking for and move them up or down the scale accordingly.

This camera does very well on its own. The flip-out LCD is a huge benefit and it makes it very easy to do self-portraits and set up photographs in awkward places -- much easier than my Canon EOS 20D SLR at quadruple the price. The optics are clean, the interface is clean and simple, and the photos come out looking great in the end. Not much more to add -- it's a great camera! The only downside I would say is that it uses 4 AA batteries, which are not included. A set of nice NiMH batteries and a charger will serve you just fine and you can buy alkaline AAs in a pinch if you're away from home without a charger, but most other Canons include a very nice rechargable battery. So add about $25 to your cost.

However, before jumping on this camera, know exactly what you're getting and whether this one is right for you. You should consider moving up to this camera if the SD-line of cameras (SD350, SD450, etc.) don't provide you with enough control and you want better manual controls (focus, aperture, exposure), a more powerful flash, and substantially better overall photo quality. The obvious downside from the SD-line is that it isn't shirt-pocket sized anymore. Then this camera may be right for you.

You should also consider skipping the A620 and moving straight to the Canon Powershot G-line (G5, G6, etc.) if you want a faster low-light lens (f/2.0 vs f/2.8), better noise suppression at high ISO, a flash hot-shoe (and much better flash control), and bracketing. You also get an incredible BP-511 battery with amazing lifespan. The G-line is also larger and heavier and obviously more expensive.

If you're sitting in between an SD500 and a Canon G6 with no intention of getting an external flash, this camera is perfect.

The Best Camera I've Ever Owned
Review created: 06/09/06

I bought this camera because I had owned two Canon brand cameras in the past and they were both excellent. This camera replaced a Canon PowerShot S20, which was my first digital camera. I had it for about five years I think and it always took really excellent pictures and still does. But my son needed a digital camera, so I bought this new one off eBay and gave him my old one.

The things I like about it are:
The screen is bigger and easier to see.
The screen flips to the side and rotates forward so your people can see their pose or you can pose in front of it and take your own picture (very cool).
It is very easy to use and has very clear graphics.
It gives you a lot of options to customize your screen (that's important to me because I have vision problems).
It uses standard AA batteries and not a special camera battery.
It comes with great software that makes it very easy to download your pictures to your computer.
Accessories are easy to find and not expensive.
It takes GREAT pictures!!!!

I have not yet used the movie feature on this camera. That's new to me. So I can't comment on that part. The one thing I have noticed is that this new camera is not quite as good as my old Canon at stopping action when your subject is moving. That may very well have something to do with the moving image feature that I haven't learned to use yet.

The 7.1 megapixels create picture files that are twice as large in size as my old camera and are more than is really needed. The old camera was 3.1 megapixels and those were clear as large as 11x14 and the largest I ever printed was 8x10. I think the only time the higher resolution (7.1) would be cool is if you wanted to make a poster size print at one of the places that can do that, or if you wanted to show your pictures as a slide show on your big screen TV. It's also good when you want to crop a small area from a larger picture. Your small area is still clear enlarged.

Bottom line is I love my new camera and would buy it again in a heartbeat. It's a good value for the money compared to other leading brands, and I saved at least $100 buying it off eBay.

This camera has lived up to all that was advertised about it. The swivel screen is great so any angle can be shot and you can still see the screen. That is a great feature. The quality of the pictures is tops. Looking forward to many years of collecting memories with it.

My first digital camera was a Canon 2MP. Since then I have acquired a dSLR for most of my shooting. But it was time to upgrade the point-and-shoot model. I had purchased a Canon 620 for my adult daughter and she loves it! The pictures are clear and sharp with good color. The 7.1MP is mort than adequate for her/our purposes, allowing for multiple cropping options. But the "gizmo" that is the most welcome? The swing-around view finder. It makes shots possible that, at best, were just 'guesses' before. All in all, an outstanding camera that has put my dSLR on the shelf for a bit. Is there a downside to the camera? Of course: it is a point-and-shoot, which brings with it the dreaded 'shutter lag'. But that is simply a given with this class of camera, no matter who makes it. Someday the manufacturers will overcome this nuisance and all will be well with the world. In the meantime, buy this camera with great confidence, and enjoy your photographic activities.

Had one - bought two more!
Review created: 01/02/08

I was an early entry into digital photography and bought a $900 Nikon Koolpix (3.4 megapixel) which was great (for the time), but when you pressed the shutter, the delay could be awful-especially with flash pictures. I bought the A620 based on a high rating from Consumer Reports. Here was twice the resolution for 1/3 the price. The greatest improvement was - little or no delay in capturing the picture you wanted. I obtained several beautiful action shots with the Canon. I took it everywhere and, when it was accidentally dropped and rendered inoperable, I was devastated.

I was delighted to see on ebay several new A620's. Many had 12 or more bids. I selected one which was closing soon and won it. Then, I found another A620 closing shortly afterwards and bid on that one also. I now have two new A620's - one is for my wife. She finds it easy to use in Auto mode for casual photos while I can get really fine results shooting in highest resolution mode. It works very well with my Adobe Lightroom software.

i really haven't used all the features, however, it has much capability to deliver results comparable to cameras costing far more. And, it is small enough to take everywhere and is easy on batteries.

so far I love this camera. I don't really have any complaints. If I did it would be that I don't have the zoom on it that I do with my Canon EOS Rebel that is not digital and has a changeable lens. But that was kinda the purpose for buying this camera smaller and not all the crap to take along. I love being able to plug it into the computer and send my pictures, why, exactly did it take me so long to get a digital camera? I don't know but I love this one-it is excellent.

We took this camera to Vegas, we took video and pictures..I had to get a bigger memory card for it, a 2GB, but I got that on Ebay and it was only $25.00 with shipping..It holds tons of video and pictures. (The card that comes with the camera doesnt hold much). The camera is so much fun and lots of learning, still havent learned everything about all the neat features but as an artist this camera will be very beneficial to me.

A620 STILL A GREAT DIGITAL CAMERA
Review created: 03/07/07
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After much research I decided on this little gem. I couldn't afford the new A640, the 610 and 630 didn't have the ability to shoot from the computer...this camera still gets great reviews even though it is no longer considered "new". If you hook up with a good trader get this camera it is worth it. Mine was used but like new.
I have yet to get through all the features. 7 megapixels strong, clear sharp photos. Like all point and shoots there are some flaws.
I consider the ccd o.k. for 7mp but for the A640 at 10mp with the exact semsor seems foolish. Again for the price I paid and a good trader with a high approval rating sealed the deal.

I bought this camera because of its high ratings in Consumer Reports. I couldn't find it online at any of the stores such as Best Buy,etc. I only found in on "ebay". The camera is not as easy to use as a Kodak Easyshare. It just takes more work at getting a great picture so it's not a problem for me.
It came with some "bonus buys" that was great to get. Price was very comparable to the listing price in Consumer Reports.

  What a great camera!

I am new to the digital camera age (yes, I have been living under a rock). After seeing this camera as one of Consumer Reports Best Buys, I decided that it was time to step up to the digital world. Let me tell you, this has been the easiest transition that I could have ever imagined! This camera is super easy to use and easy to handle. One of my favorite things is that the flash is instant. With other digital cameras I have noticed a pause between the time you push the button to when the picture is actually taken (makes things difficult as kids don't like to sit and take repeated pictures because Mom keeps missing the shot). Not so with this camera and that makes it great for people with kids. I just can't say enough about this camera and would highly recommend it for users with any level of picture taking ability.

This is last years model so finding this camera would not have been possible without Ebay. I got a great value for the money because I bought the camera and printer bundle (the printer is simple to use as well). I am actually having fun taking pictures and can't wait to explore all the new possibilities that this camera offers.

You will not be disappointed with this purchase!

  My Camera

I bought this camera because it placed #1 with Consumer Reports. I researched it and read opinions placed by others. I previously had a Minolta 5.0 megapixel and I was unhappy with the way that my prints turned out, so I was looking to purchase a new camera. It turns out that this camera was being discontinued, so I looked for it on EBay. I love my new camera! The camera does amazing things when I just have it on auto, I no longer have people with red eyes and my printed pictures look like I took them with a regular camera. It was a great buy!

  Using the Powershot

We take many photos for both online sales pics and outdoor family shots.
These cameras are an easy alternative to really overpriced models.
I can easily manipulate lighting in manual modes in our studio and get the shots I want without the tire of small settings and obtrusive compensation adjustments!
Super camera for the money.

I have had absolutely no problems with this camera. It takes great photos and video and is very easy to use (I've hardly had to break open the manual). I love the viewfinder is able to be manuevered (like a video camera) and I've been able to use that feature to get shots that I normally would not have been able to get. I highly recommend this camera!

  Canon PowerShot A620-Great
Review created: 01/05/07

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A friend has this camera and highly recommended it. It is a discontinued model, so ebay was the likely place to find it. It has all of the features one would need to easily take excellent pictures, as well as many manual features for more involved photographers. The 7.1 megapixels is more than adequate to make enlargements as needed and it may also be used for macro pictures. It probably has more features than a novice at photography would need, but, on the other hand, for one who wanted to learn more about photography, it offers the ability to grow. All of my other equipment (digital SLR, EOS SLR, and old F1N) is Canon, so I am a devoted fan.
While there are a multitude of point and shoot digital cameras out there, one should consider the excellent optics, electronics and reputation that Canon has among photographers (as does Nikon, Pentax and Leica).

This camera had the highest Consumer Report rating for lower priced digital cameras and it does live up to that reputation. It is pretty easy to use and quality of photos is excellent. The camera came with a Canon iP6220D printer which has great resolution for printing photos as well as documents. My whole family is very pleased with this purchase and I am glad that eBay made it so easy to get it at an affordable price.

I like the zoom, the clarity of the photos, also the clarity when enlarging the photos from this camera. the extra settings are awesome. the kid/pet setting, the snow and night time settings. all are awesome, you won't miss a photographic moment w/ this camera. the camera was similiar to my daughters and I liked hers. the smaller size of this camera is also an asset since my purse is always full.

I researched digital cameras for about 3 months before choosing the A620, which is actually last year's model. I had a Powershot S400 already, and I wanted to get a few more megapixels. 7 is plenty. More just takes up space on the memory card.

Features that sold me on this camera: 2.6" screen and nice optical viewfinder, too. I'd considered the SD630 (?) with the 3" screen, but I sometimes prefer an optical viewfinder and knew I would miss it.

Also, I've never owned a camera with a twistable viewer, but many reviewers seemed to like that feature so I thought I'd give it a try this time around. I love it! Already there have been several shots that I couldn't have taken without it.

The photo quality is excellent, but that is rrue for Canon cameras in general, I think. I also own a Nikon D70 (that's a fancy digital SLR that should take GREAT photos but doesn't), but the Canon photos are far superior right out of the box. I need to Photoshop all of the Nikon pics!

FOur things I don't like about the A620: The dial on top always gets turned when I take the camera out of the case, so I might take several pictures in the wrong mode before realizing that the dial has turned. Not a big deal, but an irritation. The on/off switch is easy to accidentally hit when putting the camera away. Finally, red eye is definitely a problem with the Canon. Fortunately, I'm getting pretty good at fixing it with Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. Finally, the cheapo plastic cover over the place where you insert the cord for downloading is flimsy, and it is difficult to close because it catches on the place where the wrist strap is attached.

None of these negatives are enough to make me regret my decision, though. There's no "perfect" camera out there, but this one comes pretty close to exactly what I want. Don't pay more than $225 for it, though. You should be able to find it for that or even less now that 2 newer models are out there.
