Great Entry Camera to Digital World

Before I write a review, first let me run a short history of Digital Rebel series since some of you may not know much about Canon DSLR.

As some of you already know, Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi(AKA EOS 400D) is 3rd generation of Digital Rebel series. First one was introduced back in August of 2003 and it had 6 mega pixels with sub $1000 price tag.

Last year, on February 2005 they brought Digital Rebel XT with 8 mega pixel which was an excellent upgrade to 1st generation camera with extra pixels, instant up time, faster image process with Digic II image processor, increased buffer, E-TTL II Flash to name a few.

Canon Digital Rebel XTi(I personally like 400D name better though) is the 3rd version of Digital Rebel and it's got some cool features that you might want to consider when purchasing. I've listed 10 best here.

1. 10 mega pixel CMOS sensor with improved micro-lens array, and lower noise.
2. EOS Integrated Cleaning System ++++ GOOOOOOD ++++
- Anti-static coatings on sensor surfaces
- Separate low pass filter with ultra-sonic vibration
- Software based dust mapping and removal
3. Nine point Auto Focus sensor (Same as its big brother EOS 30D)
4. Continuous shooting burst up to 27 JPEG and 10 RAW images. (up from 20 & 6)
5. Bright 2.5" LCD monitor with 160° viewing angles (Horizontal & Vertical)
6. Camera settings and adjustment on LCD monitor
7. New viewfinder view includes 9 AF points as well as EOS 30D style status bar
8. Improved user interface
9. Improved print/share/direct print features
10. Lower introductory list price

The most exciting feature on XTi is probably the Integrated Cleaning System. No matter how careful you use your camera, eventually the dust will make its way into your sensor somehow. I'm sure you've had same situation where dust got into the sensor and had to find a way to clean it off without damaging the sensor. If you shoot a white paper that covers entire screen and if you see small blurred dark spots here and there - THAT'S THE DUST ON THE SENSOR. It appears to be not noticeable when shooting textured, busy scene, but it definitely shows when shooting solid color such as clear blue sky or white backdrop. I had same issue and I've tried blowing can-air several times, but it only removed a few and sometimes created more dusts. ARRRRR!!

This New cleaning system is a heaven's call. To fight the dust problem, Canon has done these to address this issue.

1. Used materials in the mirror box and shutter chamber which are less likely to generate dust.
2. Improved the body cap, again to not generate dust.
3. Used anti-static coating on the sensor surface.
4. Created a new separated anti-alias filter which vibrates to shake off dust.
5. Added a Dust Delete Data(DDD) feature which can map stubborn dust to be removed in software.

I believe this feature is going to be present on all future Canon EOS lines from now on.

My review space is almost out, so I'll make final comments.

The XTi in my opinion is a very good entry camera and if you are thinking of upgrading point-n-shoot camera or from 1st generation Digital Rebel, I'd recommend this camera without any hesitation. Current XT users might want to wait for the upcoming 30D upgrade. XTi is great for Amateur, Semi-pro, or even some of the pros out there and as Pro myself, I am thinking to purchase this camera for back up/2nd camera to my 5D. Price you should expect is between $850~$900. Good luck and Happy Shooting!!!

  A real good DSLR camera

Canon XTi 10.1 Megapixels with a Canon EF 17-85 mm IS USM lens (NOT the standard lens 18-55mm). It is a real good camera ! I did 2500 photos in one month (OCT-2006). Results = very good.

What I recommand, from hardware point of view:
- Canon XTi (main body only).
- LENS: Canon EF 17-85mm IS USM = 5x optical zoom, IS=image stabilizer, USM = fast focus.
- CF memory 2 Gb 120x = you need a fast CF and big enough to store lots of photos.
- UV filter (Kenko) - to protect the lens.
- Circular polarizer filter (Kenko) - reducing glare and increase the saturation in landscape photos
- DSLR bag (Roots) - I got one special designed for DSLRs = triangle shape with space for filters, extra battery, cleaning kit.
- extra battery !!
- cap retainer cord self adhesiv - (Optex).
- tripod.
- USB 2 card reader/writer = I DONT like to use the camera's USB port.
- picasa2 (free from google: http://picasa.google.com ) as photo organizer and minimal post processing as well. The software provided by Canon is a joke.

Pro (what I like):
- easy to use (if my mother like to use this camera means is really easy to use)! To change ISO is just one-click. Only one dial (front wheel).
- the whole camera is very well balanced (even with that not from the kit lens - EF 17-85 mm is much longer and heavy than standard).
- ISO 1600 with very little noise - good for low light indoors - think about museum where you are allowed to do photos but without flash. So with ISO 1600 was ok.
- not so heavy as you think for an DSLR.
- the AI mode for AF - kind of smart automatic continuous focus.
- the battery charger is compact and good from 110V - 240 V, 50-60Hz = good for North America, Europe as well.
- sensor self cleaning system = good ideea from Canon !!!!

Cons (what I dont like):
- tendency to underexpose !! - you must double check the automatic exposure.
- the lens cap has no cord - you can loose the cap so I added a sticky cap retainer cord from Optex.
- no histogram in real time. You can check the histogram after you doing the photo.
- the software provided by Canon just sucks !!! picasa2 from google is much better !!

Overall: - Good DSLR camera. NOT excellent because of that tendency to underexpose!!! Results printed in 8x10 (8x12) with no post processing was great !

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1
Review created: 07/25/08

The Canon Digital Rebel XTi (EOS-400D) is a very impressive entry-level digital SLR. It offers great photo quality and performance, plenty of features (most notably, a dust reduction system), a large LCD, and plenty of accessories. The Rebel XTi earns my recommendation.
The Rebel XTi has all the features you'd expect from a D-SLR, plus a few more. The XTi's resolution has been bumped up to 10 Megapixels, which is actually more than the "superior" EOS-30D -- I imagine a 40D can't be too far away. A more interested addition to the XTi is a dust reduction system, which attacks this annoyance from many angles (described earlier). In terms of shooting modes, you've got several scene modes, plus full manual exposure controls. While it won't let you set the color temperature, the XTi will let you do custom white balance, WB bracketing, and WB shift. Canon bundles a fairly complete software package with the camera, including a capable RAW editor and a remote capture program, both of which are options on the Nikon D80.

Camera performance was excellent in most respects. While the camera doesn't start up as quickly as some, it's due to the dust reduction system, and you can elect to skip this if you need to take a quick shot. The XTi focuses quickly, shutter lag isn't noticeable, and shot-to-shot speeds were snappy. The XTi can take 11 RAW or 33 Fine quality JPEGs in a row at just under 3 frames/second. About the only weak spot performance-wise is battery life, which is a bit below average.

Photo quality was excellent, especially with a decent lens on the camera (and the kit lens isn't one of those). The XTi took well-exposed, colorful images with very low noise levels, even at ISO 800. Like on all of Canon's D-SLRs, images are on the soft side straight out of the camera, and if you agree you can turn up the in-camera sharpening using the Picture Styles feature. Purple fringing levels varied depending on what lens I was using, but generally it wasn't a problem. Same goes for redeye -- there wasn't any to speak of.

There are just a few negatives that didn't fit in elsewhere. Like the other Rebel D-SLRs, there's no spot metering feature on the XTi. There isn't a custom or 2 second self-timer either, which is strange, since Canon's PowerShot cameras all have it. You can, however, use the mirror lockup option in the custom setting menu to accomplish this -- it's just a lot of work to do so.

And that's about it! Despite not being a big fan of its small size, I do like and actually love how the Rebel XTi performs, and it gets my highest recommendation.

Canon Digital Rebel XTi Camera SLR Image Stablizer Lens
Review created: 07/24/08

I own a Rebel XT but my son uses it all the time so I bought this one for me.
It is easy to use even if you don't use all the fancy stuff. It almost instantly snaps the picture which is what I was looking for. My first digital camera had a lag time that infuriated me. I was always missing the moment. This camera also takes several pictures in quick succession. This camera so far has been a delight to own.

  A small, lightweight DSLR
Review created: 07/17/08

I generally shoot with a Cannon 5D which is a larger and heavier camera. I have also used the Canon Digital Rebel, the Digital Rebel XT, the 10D, and the 20D, and the 40D. The XTi is the smallest & lightest wieght of all of the Digital Rebels I have tried. Its picture quality is excellent and it fits in my hand well. I don't think there is anything I don't like about this camera. I still prefer my %D for the full frame sensor but this is the camera I like to carry when I don't want to have to carry the wieght & bulk of the 5D. This is a great camera for the money.

Excellent camera at very reasonable price level.
Previously owned Canon SLR 650 for films, and had excellent years for many years.
The Canon Rebel DSLR XTi was the best digital camera value that I could find, and with which I could also ue the numerous other lens that I had and previously used with the 'film" version.
Excellent camera, very reasonable price, fantastic pictures.

Excelent camera but don't buy it if you're a beginning. This equipment is an easy way to handling but you should have professional knowledge to take good shoots.

We are delighted with it. It is as easy to use as one of those little 'disposable' digitals, but the quality of the photos is up there with the pros. No waiting after you click for the camera to get around to taking the photo!!!

have tried to acquire this product, but I have lost the communication with the vendor after my demand for expenses totals piú shipment. they say to me that I must be to make to know expenses, and then I do not mean to pay a cost of high tax import like here in Brazile, if they declare produced new.

I searched for a decent price on this camera. I always check ebay and was surprised to find the lowest price and so many extras that came with my new Digital Rebel XTi. I love the camera and have already taken over one thousand pictures with it. It was packed well and was like Christmas when it came! Sunshine Electronics was excellent to work with over the phone and had great customer service. This is a great camera and it was a wonderful experience with the seller.

  Great Intermediate professional camera
Review created: 07/07/08

I have always wanted a "semi professional" camera, and when I came across the package deal with everything I needed to get started I jumped on it. Everything came extremely promptly (actually rushed delivered it, so I could have it for an event) and everything that was supposed to be included was. The camera has great features, and is very easy to learn (even if you are a beginner), it takes great pictures, and among the 3 professional photographers of whom I've spoke to, they all say that it is a "great camera" and a "great intermediate camera with tons of potential for the learning photographer." Great buy, and great service.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi 10.1 Megapixel
Review created: 07/05/08

I bought my Canon Rebel xti package 2 weeks ago. The package came with Canon brand 20-90mm, 75-300mm, and the 50mm fixed lenses, as well as the Canon battery.
The product itself is wonderful. all the lenses produce crisp, clean shots. The features allow you to have many color and effect options or simply a basic, beautiful shot. I'm highly pleased with this item. The only complaint that I have is the camera doesn't have a camcorder built in, where as some inferior cameras I've owned have. But over all, I'm recommend this product to any one, especially for professionalism.
