Plenty of camera for almost anyone!

Since Canon came out with the new Rebel XT in early 2005, the original 6.3 MP Digital Rebel seems to have lost some of its original mojo, but I'm here to say, "Not Fair!"

For amateur and hobbyist digital photographers who are looking to step into the advanced world of Digital SLR cameras, the original Rebel still makes a ton of sense, particularly when considering value for the money.

The Rebel provides a full set of features and take very high-quality photos. Sure, 6.3MP may be less than the 8MP offered by the Rebel XT, but how many of us really need 8MP?? Even with my Rebel, I typically shoot in medium-sized mode, to keep file size manageable - very few of us will ever shoot full 6.3MP RAW images - due to the size of the resulting files and the complexities of editing and dealing with RAW images.

The Rebel provides burst mode shooting - critical if you have kids, or like to shoot any kind of action shots. There are several excellent "pre-settings" for particular situations, such as close-ups, motion shots, and landscape shots. And of course, you can add all sorts of specialized lenses and filters to create even more shooting options.

Finally, I'd like to comment on the form factor of the original Rebel vs. the XT. Some have praised the XT because it is smaller and lighter than the original Rebel, but personally I do not like the feel of the XT - it doesn't feel nearly as solid and substantive as the original Rebel. Further, I found the XT harder to grip solidly than the original, which may be larger, but provides plenty of body to grab on to.

When you consider that prices on the original Rebel have continued to come down - especially on eBay, I think it makes a lot of sense to think about this camera as one of most cost-effective ways to make the leap into the world of SLR photography and all that it offers!

Great way to start Digital SLR Photography
Review created: 10/05/05

Captures excellent image quality. Easy to use. Quiet shutter. Provides Auto and Manual mode. Great battery life. Very light weight compare to other SLR cameras. Also inexpensive(under $700 these days).

A few downside made its rating 4/5. Slow start-up time (a few seconds) is sometimes annoying. Card write/read time can be slow sometimes when shooting multiple images continuously, especially in RAW mode.

Overall great camera, and would recommand to anyone looking for budget digital SLR. Takes almost all EF, EF-S lens.

Like: 4x6 aspect ratio, light weight, ability to accept filters.
Dislike: the meter can't read sky and clouds well, tends to block high values. This was a very big disappointment.
Not a superior camera to my Canon Powershot S60 (which is a point and shoot).

Canon EOS Digital Rebel 6.3 MP

I was looking for an entry level digital slr camera and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel 6.3 megapixal was obtained at an extremely reasonable price. It is a great entry level camera and I have been impressed by the pictures taken in the last month. I purchased an additional zoom lens on eBay and have used the camera for sports and still pictures. There are better cameras out there, but for the price, this one is hard to beat.

  The Canon 300D

To be honest I was not sure if I was going to be satisfied with a 6.3 mega pixel camera! Well after the first few snaps with the amazing little machine, my mind was changed the pictures were brilliant, I have printed on large size photo paper and cannot tell when resizing the images to fit!

The Canon EOS 300D has so many features you most definitely get your money worth from this camera.

It is an excellent camera an easy to use.
Review created: 06/11/08

It is canons first camera alone this line of products. I was used to film cameras with the same quality, and was glad to get a digital with removable lens. It has proven easy to use and takes great pictures. The added pixels make great pictures when you blow them up. I have taken my granddaugters wedding pictures on the beach to many of my orchids in my greenhouse, and all have come out with the best of quality. The professional photographer at the wedding had the same camera as mind which gave me more confidence that I had made the right decision to buy this one.

It has made me feel like a professional!

And now no more film to develop. I send out what I was printed, and they come back looking like professional pictures.

Thanks Canon!

Good quality if used properly. Not as simple as I had gotten used to with a point and shoot. Can't beat the price I paid or quality of pictures.

  Great Camera
Review created: 05/08/08
by:

The picture quality is fantastic and so far I am very satisfied with my purchase, particularly because I got it for far less money than it originally cost since I bought it on ebay. There are, of course, frustrations, just like with any new camera, but I am still so pleased with it and I take it with me everywhere. The camera is easy to hold and user friendly -- I still haven't read a stitch of the manuel and I've been able to figure all of the settings out, though I did have a canon powershot before, which seems quite similar. I wish it had a better zoom, but that's okay. Also, uploading is rather slow and complicated, but maybe if I read the manual I might find an easier way. Aside from that, I'm thrilled with the camera and its picture quality. It's a great way to go from digital point and shoot to SLR -- I haven't felt too overwhelmed, but it has more of the options that I'm looking for.

Wow. Canon does it well. Great camera for the first timer. You can really go wild with accessories. Have a big pocket book for quality lenses. Awesome camera for most things but for indoor sport shots you definately need a quality lens. The camera is a little slow for fast action shots in AF mode.

Es una excelente cámara digital. Las fotos quedan preciosas, nítidas, con los colores originales. Es la ventaja de tener una que no es digital, ya que no hay que ponerle rollo ni llevarlo a revelar.

Definitely worth the investment. I am new to SLR photography. Graduating from a point and shoot is a smooth trasition with the Digital Rebel. I love the flexibility of creativity that this camera gives me. I can't wait to upgrade toa higher pixel, some of photos are petty granular, but could be a learning curve on my part. I am looking forward to finding some good lenses to play with, and explore the endless possibilities!

The BEST Camera for the PRICE!!
Review created: 01/17/08
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I had been an avid owner of the point-and-shoot high-megapixel cameras for years, and when my last one was dropped and shattered (like a piece of high-priced junk), I went on a mission to find an indestructible camera.
Nikon cameras are generally more popular, because for whatever reason, their name is more well-known (I know, than Canon?!?!?). Canon DSLR cameras are smaller, more light-weight, have a much better (larger and better quality) selection of lenses and equipment, and generally work better (better quality materials.
I purchased my first Canon 300D in 2005 and was astonished at the size and quality of picture I could take with it!! It, at only 6.3 megapixels, takes not-even-comparable better quality pictures than even the best-of-the-best point and shoots.
This camera is great because it is: 1. light-weight (among comparable products), 2. easy to grip/hold, 3. can be dropped, drug around by a child, or other horrible things without being damaged (I know this for a fact), 4. Canon has a wonderful warranty program, and 4. it takes both EF and EF-S lenses. I could actually gush on forever about how wonderful this lens is...
The only bad thing I've ever thought about this camera is, that if this camera is this wonderful, then how much MORE WONDERFUL would the newer XT or XTi or the professional line cameras be??? It keeps me wanting more.
I've finally let go of all of my cheapie lenses to invest in a couple of great ones and I couldn't be more pleased! This camera takes phenomenal pictures for a new camera student, an amateur, or a pro-to-be. It comes at a great price too: you can find them for almost half the price of the newer ones. I paid under $500 for mine NEW, at a nation-wide retailer, and was able to buy an extended warranty that doesn't expire until 2010 (remember I bought the camera in 2005). It doesn't get much better than that- especially when the cost of the warranty was not much more than $100.
I guess what it comes down to is that you can spend $200, 300 or 400 on what you think is a great point and shoot, and it will never be anything more. For the same price (or not much more) you can buy a DSLR camera kit like mine (lens included) and you'd never go back! And you have the options of lenses, filter, flashes, everything that doesn't really work with the point & shoot cameras. So there is no comparison. And my pics (with my new lenses) are just as good of quality as those of the newer XT and XTi's, so it really is the best deal for the price!!

My son is a photo major and has this camera. I purchased it based on his recommendation. I really love the camera's automatic focus features. The icons you can select (for protrait, landscape, etc.) make taking pictures a snap. You can also select the manual feature. I haven't used this feature because I don't have much knowledge about taking pictures. The batteries are rechargeable and charge quickly. The pictures I have taken so far are crisp and clear. I haven't encountered anything about this camerea that I don't like!

Great in 2003, not so great now

Coupled with a good lens (like the 50mm f/1.8,) this camera takes spectacular pictures. I've had a number of them printed at 20"x30", and they were crisp. The shutter has no significant lag. This is well known to be a crippled 10D camera which blew the competition away at the time, and also goes by the name 300D.

The problems come in when you need good auto focus and speed. This is mediocre, at best. The "I'll decide what focus mode to use" which the user has no control over was a terrible design idea. I'd like to flog the designer who came up with that idea. It doesn't behave like any other EOS camera body I've ever used, where you press the shutter button half way to lock the focus, recompose and shoot. It has often focused on the back wall when I attempted to take a picture of two people with even a moderate gap between them. The kicker is that it looks in focus on the little LCD screen even if you zoom. Only when you print them or look at them on the computer can you tell that it was out of focus.

The viewfinder is small and hard to see what you're attempting to focus on.

Having instant feedback on the LCD is the big plus of the digital era, and this does pretty well. You can play back an image and zoom in to see if anyone had blinked. However, playback is VERY slow compared to the newer cameras. It takes at least a few seconds between pictures. It isn't a high enough resolution to tell if your focus was dead on or slightly off, though.

Also, it is VERY slow at writing to large memory cards, regardless of their speed. The larger the card, the slower this thing writes. I have a very fast name-brand 4GB card which performs slower than a much slower 512MB card.

Exposure is usually right on, but it often has underexposed on me, especially shooting indoors with a flash. I had to use the "Russian Firmware" to have access to boost the FEC (flash exposure control.)

Being able to shoot in RAW format is a huge plus. Many who just shoot JPEG don't know what they're missing. Yes, it does take time to process your images but the control you get over them is excellent. Those underexposed images were easily aided by a boost in exposure through a RAW converter. It's not a miracle cure since it does increase noise on underexposed shots, but it does usually make them usable.

Overall, this camera takes great pictures of stationary objects, especially those outdoors. In dim lighting or of moving subjects, you would do well to consider one of the more recent Rebel cameras or something along the 40D line. It's a decent camera to learn with but can frustrate you with that focusing design problem which was only corrected in the successor XT body.

Battery life is good. Aftermarket batteries with a higher mah capacity work great. In fact, this battery is still used in the newest cameras Canon has released.

Had I reviewed this a few years back, it would have gotten a higher rating. But even cheap point and shoot cameras outperform this now, depending on the lens of course.

I can't rate this yet as I haven't had a chance to use it. Been to busy getting it fixed and buying the stuff the camera needs to operate properly. When all is said and done it would have been cheaper to buy a new and better model digital camera. This is the second time I have been had on ebay and it won't happen again.

I have never had any problems with my camera. I own the Canon Digital Rebel EOS 6.3MP version with the 18-55mm lens. This is an amazing camera that never ceases to amaze me. I work for a professional photographic company, I am a sports photographer. We use this exact same camera at work. We have never had any problems with them. We use them for hours on end. We have photographed about 130 baseball teams with these cameras and the battery never needed to be changed. We have not had any problems with these cameras at all. Great product.

I love this camera. I was skeptical about going digital due to the quality that I loved so much with my Canon EOS RebelX S 35MM I wanted the same quality picture or better. So I bit the bullet and bought the 300D it came as a bundled kit which was the best purchase I ever made. Started using the camera in April 2005 and I have not put it down since. I have taken over 9,000 pictures and it is still going strong. I have used it for sports, plays, close-ups on babies, children, landscapes, and countless weddings and a funeral. The lens I use is a Tamron AF(IF)28-300mm this is the only lens you need for great shots if you don't want to change lenses all the time. Make sure you have two batteries because you never want to miss a shot! I purchased two Canon 300D's in the last five months for my two nieces and they are very happy with the camera. Since this model is not being manufactured anymore buying a used camera is not a bad way to go. Just make sure you check everything out with the comments section and ask lots of questions. Good luck!

I am not a photographer, but I feel like one now. I take this camera with me
almost everywhere. It's easy to use, takes amazing photos and is my new side kick.
I did purchase an additional lens for more versatility as the standard (18-55) lens that comes with the camera is descent but does not have a lot of range.
